Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Lin Zhixia stood before the mirror, staring at her reflection. The black dress was simple yet elegant, its cut perfectly framing her increasingly resilient state of mind. The lights reflected off her face, tracing her features, but her gaze pierced through the mirror, looking past the glamorous exterior to the conflict and resolve deep within her heart.
In this moment, she was no longer the little girl hiding in her parents’ shadow. She took a deep breath, her fingertips trembling slightly, yet the flames of revenge in her heart burned ever brighter. She recalled He Xingchuan’s cold analysis during their secret meeting, where he had articulated with perfect clarity the Zhou Family’s predicament, her mother’s greed, and her father’s crumbling company.
He Xingchuan’s tone had carried a hint of indifference: “Without this birthday banquet, your father’s company would likely go bankrupt next month. Meanwhile, your mother is using all of this to try and push you out of the public eye. She won’t hide her greed that night; instead, she will use every trick in her book to protect her own interests.”
She bit her lower lip, a strong sense of unease surging in her chest, yet she also felt a flicker of anticipation for the truth that was about to be unveiled. The olive branch of cooperation He Xingchuan had extended was like a lifeline, helping her pull herself away from her fear and anxiety.
“I will help you take back everything that belongs to you, Lin Zhixia.” That promise made her feel that even if the road ahead was filled with thorns, she might finally see the light of dawn. Yet, at the same time, another voice echoed in her mind: Was a partnership with He Xingchuan truly trustworthy? He had always been cold, acting as if he only cared about profit.
But right now, she had no choice. Her internal unease transformed into a firm conviction; she had to act. She had to fight for herself-for the person who was no longer a mere pawn.
Outside the window, the streetlights were dimming. As night fell, Lin Zhixia’s heart couldn’t help but tighten. She thought of the vulnerability and fear Gu Lan had shown in the coffee shop. Although she could no longer fully understand the friend who once stood by her side, she felt a faint premonition that various hidden forces were whispering in the dark, plotting their next moves.
“See you tonight,” she whispered to herself, as if bolstering her own courage. Then, she turned away from the mirror and walked toward the banquet hall with firm steps.
On the eve of the grand celebration, the hotel lobby was decorated like a scene from a vibrant festival. The magnificent golden lights made every corner look luxurious and dazzling. Guests of all kinds moved through the space, their laughter and chatter rising and falling as if this prosperity and noise were destined to mask the turbulence in her heart. Facing such a seemingly perfect birthday banquet, she would encounter an even deeper test.
Her father’s smile was so bright in this moment, like a flower in full bloom, carefree and drawing the eyes of everyone around him. However, she knew that what her father wanted to protect was the most fragile line of defense at this banquet. His secret dealings with the Zhou Family, her mother’s sinister calculations, and her father’s long-faded glory-all of it would be subjected to ruthless scrutiny during this gathering.
Lin Zhixia made up her mind. She was not a passive bystander; she was the director of this “grand play.” She had to seize every opportunity to uncover the truth beneath the crashing waves.
The banquet began, and the guests entered one after another. Her mother stood beside her father, her smile as dignified as ever, the picture of a proper hostess creating a perfect illusion of family harmony. But Lin Zhixia knew it was all a facade. The darkness and contradictions hidden behind it were brewing a storm that was about to break.
As the banquet progressed, Lin Zhixia quietly observed her surroundings, secretly searching for any possible support and evidence. Her goal was clear: in a setting like this, she had to expose everything she had collected to the crowd as much as possible. Every piece of news she dropped and every conversation she held could become the key to revealing the truth.
“Zhixia! You’re here too?” A crisp call interrupted her thoughts. Turning around, she saw Gu Lan stepping out from the crowd, a smile on her face as she tried her best to act as if nothing were wrong.
“I know what you’re going through, Zhixia. You must be careful tonight!” Gu Lan lowered her voice slightly, her tone laced with concern and tension. Her behavior only made Lin Zhixia’s complex emotions toward her stir even more.
“What are you doing here?” Lin Zhixia asked curtly, making no effort to hide her suspicion. “Your mother is going to involve you in even deeper danger tonight. Are you sure you can manage to stay out of it?”
Gu Lan lowered her head gloomily, seemingly struggling within. A few seconds later, she looked up, her gaze unexpectedly firm. “No matter how she threatens me, I don’t want to be used by her anymore. I’m going to stand by your side, Zhixia.”
This sudden support warmed Lin Zhixia’s heart, but at the same time, a vague sense of worry welled up. The tangled interests between He Xingchuan, Gu Lan, and her parents meant that every move they made was an unpredictable variable on the chessboard; she had to remain vigilant at all times.
“What we are holding here isn’t just my father’s birthday banquet, but a farewell to the past,” she resolved secretly, determined to never let anyone else decide her fate again.
For a moment, the atmosphere in the banquet hall grew even more tense, and Lin Zhixia’s heart was filled with both courage and unease. She waited for the right moment to act, summoning her resolve as she prepared to step into the spotlight.
The banquet was about to reach its climax, and Lin Zhixia felt she was ready. At this moment, she no longer doubted that the truth hidden beneath this magnificent feast was about to be uncovered, marking a step forward for her. Holding her breath, her heart rate quickened, yet she felt fulfilled and determined.
“Now is the time,” she encouraged herself silently, stepping toward the center of the impending storm.
He Xingchuan was positioned in the distance. He watched everything at the banquet quietly, his brow slightly furrowed, his face revealing calculation and reflection.
Just then, his gaze caught Lin Zhixia. A trace of inscrutable interest flickered in his deep eyes. Her trust and wariness toward him were intertwined, appearing both brilliant and dangerous. Tonight, all bets would be placed, and all rivalries would unfold.
“I will have everything arranged properly,” He Xingchuan said with a firm tone, as if he already held the entire situation in the palm of his hand. His actions ran parallel to his plans; just as Lin Zhixia thought, there was only one ultimate goal: to tear away the disguise and let the truth come to light.
Amidst the clinking of wine glasses, Lin Zhixia’s eyes remained steady. Her conviction reached a new height in this moment. Facing the coming storm, she was no longer that ignorant girl.
Inside her heart, a bright cry seemed to break through the heavy haze, dispelling all fear and anxiety at once. Tonight would be the start of a new era.
“No one can predict the ending,” Lin Zhixia murmured to herself. All her decisions converged at this moment, mirroring her fearless declaration: this time, she would personally direct this “grand play.”
