Who is the real Mrs. Lu? - Chapter 5
After waiting for a while, there was a knock on the door.
Lv Qingqing went to open it, and Lu Zhan stood at the entrance, carrying a bag.
My gaze went past Lv Qingqing and landed on Lu Zhan.
He looked at me, and I looked at him. Our eyes met, but neither of us spoke.
Lv Qingqing glanced at him, then at me, and suddenly laughed, “Look at me, you two haven’t been formally introduced yet, have you? Che, this is my husband Lu Zhan, you’ve seen his photos. Zhan, this is my sister Che.”
I looked at Lv Qingqing. She maintained a smile on her face but was nervously twisting her fingers.
I looked at Lu Zhan again.
After a quiet moment, I opened my mouth.
“Hello,” I said softly, “Brother-in-law.”
Lv Qingqing’s tense expression instantly relaxed. She smiled and came over, “You must be hungry, Zhan brought food, hurry and eat, then have a good sleep.”
Lv Qingqing helped me to the sofa nearby, and Lu Zhan placed the food boxes one by one on the coffee table.
“Zhan, did you buy this from the hospital?”
Lu Zhan shook his head, “The hospital canteen’s food isn’t good, I went to a restaurant and had them make it fresh.”
With that, he placed a box of chili stir-fried pork in front of me.
I’m someone who gets heaty from eating spicy food, yet I love chili stir-fried pork the most.
The fresh green chili paired with strips of pork is the best way to vent when feeling down.
The chef was thoughtful and added egg strips inside.
At this moment, a pair of slender jade-like hands reached over and moved a box of plain stir-fried loofah in front of me.
“Loofah is light, eat more of this,” Lv Qingqing said with a smile.
I nodded.
The three of us ate in silence.
“Sis,” I said softly, “After going back to Hai City with you, I… want to find a job.”
Lv Qingqing was stunned for a moment, then immediately put down her chopsticks and said, “It’s good that you think this way, I’ve always wanted you to find a proper job.”
“But I don’t have any qualifications,” I said softly, “I tried before, it’s very difficult. Nowadays, there are university graduates everywhere, I couldn’t find a job even in the county, let alone Hai City, so is there any possibility…”
I paused and said softly, “Is there any possibility at… at Lv Group, to arrange a job like a junior clerk or something for me…”
“This…” Lv Qingqing hesitated a bit.
“A lower salary is fine, I just want to gain some work experience first,” I looked at her, “If… it’s too difficult, forget it… I’ll try to find something myself.”
“It’s not that,” Lv Qingqing held my hand, “I’m just worried about Dad’s side… after all, we look alike, many people at Lv Group recognize me…”
“I also think,” Lu Zhan suddenly spoke, “going to Lv Group isn’t quite appropriate.”
Lv Qingqing and I looked at him simultaneously.
“Come to Lu Group.”
I was stunned, and Lv Qingqing’s eyes were also surprised, “Zhan?”
Lu Zhan took a sip of tea and said casually, “The Secretary’s Office just had an assistant resign yesterday, do you know basic English?”
I nodded.
“Zhan,” Lv Qingqing tugged at him, “I know you want to help, but Che didn’t even graduate high school, I’m afraid she won’t be able to handle the assistant job in the Secretary’s Office and might cause trouble for you.”
I paused, not saying anything.
Actually, my English was very good in high school, I won first prize in a national competition.
After dropping out, I hardly had time to touch books again, and indeed forgot quite a bit.
But the year I married Lu Zhan, in order to maintain Lv Qingqing’s persona as a wealthy family’s daughter, I didn’t work after marriage. During the day when Lu Zhan was at work, my way of passing the time was reading.
Lu Zhan had many English books, and I read them while flipping through the dictionary, finishing half a bookshelf of books.
Once, I was so engrossed that I didn’t even notice when Lu Zhan came home.
After finishing a section, I looked up and found he had already changed clothes, smiling at the doorframe, watching me.
Who knows how long he had been watching.
Our eyes met, and the last ray of sunset cast a golden veil over him.
He came over, picked me up horizontally, and laughed, “I never thought I’d have to compete with my treasured books for my wife one day.”
He sat on the sofa, wrapping me in his arms, pointing at the book in my hand, “Let me see, what part has you so engrossed?”
I opened the book to show him.
He pointed to a line, “If equal affection can not be, let the more loving be me.”
He smiled, “What does it mean?”
I blushed, “You already know, why ask me?”
“Hmm.” He tucked my hair behind my ear with one hand, kissing downwards.
That night, he carried me, exhausted and half-asleep, back to the bedroom. Just before I fell asleep, I heard him whisper in my ear:
“Wife, let the more loving be me.”
With a “clang,” the sound of a cup tipping over pulled me back to reality. Lv Qingqing was hurriedly wiping the table with a tissue.
Lu Zhan took a few tissues to help her wipe her hands, his voice gentle, “Look at you, how can you be so careless?”
After tidying up the table, Lu Zhan said to Lv Qingqing, “Let’s settle it like this for now. Your sister doesn’t have work experience, and it might be difficult for her elsewhere. Her identity is special, and if you go elsewhere to ask for help, your father-in-law might not be pleased. Let her come to Lu Group to learn. Only a few executives know you here, and it’s better for her here. After a year or so, it will be easier to find a job elsewhere.”
Then he turned to me, “The job is simple, just sending and receiving emails. But since you want to work, you have to be serious. If you make mistakes, you’ll be criticized just the same. Also,” he paused, his tone serious, “some of your previous work habits need to change. Lu Group has a very upright culture and doesn’t allow any nonsense.”
“Oh, Zhan,” Lv Qingqing quickly said, “why are you so serious? Don’t scare Che. Che, say something.”
“I know, I will do my best.” I paused, “Thank you, brother-in-law.”
Just then, Lv Qingqing’s phone rang.
She walked to the window to answer it.
“Mom, I’ve picked up Che. I’ll see how things go, okay, okay…”
Lu Zhan and I ate in silence. Suddenly, he looked up.
“What is your name?”
I met his gaze and softly said, “Yin Lanche.”
“Hmm.” He put down his bowl, “My name is Lu Zhan.”
