When My Star Came Home - Chapter 3
I went home, packed my suitcase, and sat in the living room waiting for Pei Yu so I could tell him I wanted a divorce.
Afternoon turned into evening. He neither came home nor contacted me.
At one in the morning, footsteps finally sounded outside the door.
Click.
“Ningning, you’re still up?”
He looked exhausted. Dark stubble shadowed his chin, and his usually immaculate suit was rumpled.
His gaze landed on the suitcase beside me. “Where are you going?”
I fought back tears. “Where were you today?”
“A friend was ill. I took them to the hospital.”
“What friend?”
“My college roommate.”
College… roommate?
My brain froze. “A man?”
“…What else?”
The tears on the verge of falling retreated.
I grabbed my suitcase. “Nothing. It’s been so damp lately, I brought this out to air it.”
He caught me before I could make my escape. “You came to my office.”
“No!”
He chuckled. “Little liar.”
“You thought I was two-timing you?”
“No!”
“I’d advise you not to lie to a prosecutor.”
“You’re a prosecutor outside,” I declared with perfect conviction. “At home, you’re my husband.”
His eyes darkened. With an arm around my waist, he pulled me down onto the sofa. His throat bobbed. “What did you just call me?”
“Say it again.”
“No.”
He coaxed me gently. “Ruan An froze your credit cards. Call me that again and I’ll give you a supplementary card on my account.”
What a tempting offer.
“My husband…” I whispered. “Mmph!”
As if he’d suddenly lost control, he pressed his burning lips to mine.
“Ningning, I’ve missed you so much.”
Just then, a phone rang. I nudged him. “Your phone,” I murmured.
He ignored it and kissed me more fiercely, as though punishing me for being distracted.
But whoever was calling was relentless. One call after another.
At last, he surrendered.
“What?” His face was black as thunder.
“Nothing.”
He froze. “Then why the hell are you calling me?”
“Just wanted to tell you I’m fine now.”
A few seconds passed before Pei Yu parted his lips.
“Fuck off.”
I rubbed my stomach, sore from laughing. “Was that your other half, Lawyer Qiu?”
“Mm,” he answered sullenly.
“Ha! Why is a lawyer trying to make it as a comedian?”
He didn’t answer, only brushed a finger over my nose. “You got lucky today.”
A month flew by. The studio was open and gradually finding its feet.
One day, while Meng Yize and I were discussing a new collection, Pei Yu called.
“What do you want?” I asked.
Meng Yize looked up. “Who’s that?”
“Are you free tonight?” Pei Yu paused. “Is Little Poodle there with you?”
His voice wasn’t exactly quiet. Meng Yize’s eyes widened, and he pointed at himself in bewilderment.
“By Little Poodle, does he mean me?” he mouthed.
I waved my hands at him and went over to the window.
“Aren’t you a bit old to be this childish?”
Pei Yu snorted. “I’ll pick you up after work.”
“Where are we going?”
“Not telling.”
