Waterbound Love - Chapter 49
Lin Mumu’s arrival broke the original silence, her heart already aflutter with unease about the current situation, but she couldn’t stay away.
Wei Wen looked up at Lin Mumu, furrowing his brow slightly. His gaze drifted and settled on her slightly rounded belly, his expression softening, revealing a touch of tenderness. Encouraged, Lin Mumu smiled at Du Bai.
Du Bai watched their subtle interaction closely, her heart sneering coldly as she remembered Shen Yan’s bandaged chest, her eyes filled with a chilling coldness.
“Lin Mumu, I called you here today to ask you something-how deep is your love for Wei Wen?” Her tone was reluctant, as if the direct question was the least hurtful, considering the long distance she had walked, a mere pitiful woman.
Lin Mumu didn’t understand why Du Bai would ask such a thing, but chose to remain silent, her head bowed like a child who had done something wrong. Wei Wen frowned, looking at Du Bai.
Ignoring Lin Mumu’s silence, Du Bai continued, “Is your love the kind where you can only have him? To remove any obstacles in your way by any means necessary, including me, your Senior Sister, who once treated you well but now stands in the way of your happiness?” Du Bai finished speaking and stared intently at Lin Mumu.
Lin Mumu furrowed her brows tightly, shaking her head vigorously, “No, Senior Sister, I didn’t.”
“Not? Didn’t you encourage Ji Feiling to act against me when Wei Wen saw me? You’ve always been helping Ji Feiling, haven’t you? I don’t care to bring up the past, but this time, you really shouldn’t have.” She shouldn’t have overestimated Ji Feiling’s capabilities and underestimated mine. And what she should never have done was to let the wrong people get hurt in this unwarranted incident.
Lin Mumu’s face turned pale, “Wei Wen, I didn’t, she has no proof, she misunderstood me, I can explain.” Du Bai sneered, still immature, still not grown up enough. Such an opponent was destined to be a disposable pawn.
Wei Wen looked at Lin Mumu with a face full of agony. “I trust Ruoruo; she is too proud to falsely accuse anyone. Lin Mumu, oh Lin Mumu, I have been nothing but generous to you, and yet you’ve destroyed my child?” His voice cracked as he gripped Lin Mumu’s shoulders, shaking her violently.
Lin Mumu forcefully pushed Wei Wen away and steadied herself against the wall, wiping off the tears that had spilled. “You’ve been generous? Ha, what a joke! From the first day I met you, you made it clear that I was just a replacement for some fantasy in your head, never truly welcome in your heart. If you really cared about me, why couldn’t you see things from my perspective? I’m just a young girl, naturally I would fall in love and naturally, I would get hurt. Or is it that you rich folks naturally feel superior, trampling and tormenting us without a second thought? Maybe I’m putting it too nicely. You privileged people never consider those outside your circle to be real humans!” Lin Mumu wiped her tears again, her anger directed at Du Bai, but her gaze stayed fixed on Wei Wen. “When it’s her child, it’s a child, and losing it unexpectedly brings you pain and anger. What about my child? You would orchestrate an ‘accident’ for her to die, and you probably never even considered acknowledging her.”
“From China to Paris, and back to China, my unwavering devotion to you could never match a fleeting childhood dream. All these years, I never thought of giving up or feeling wronged, but now, I regret ever meeting you. I even regret the eyes my mother gave me, the eyes that once made me proud and kept you enchanted. But the one thing I am grateful for is that I killed the child you wanted to acknowledge but never did.”
“Shut up!” With a loud slap, Wei Wen knocked Lin Mumu to the ground. He stared at his hand that had struck her, clenched it tightly, and stormed away with a fling of his sleeves. He was too disturbed, realizing overnight he had lost the only tie to the woman he loved, a tie he himself had severed, and now, regret flooded him like a burst dam, along with feelings he couldn’t face or admit, urging him to leave.
Du Bai stood by quietly, watching the only remaining Lin Mumu. She chuckled, “Does it hurt? Then cry out.”
Lin Mumu clutched her belly, glaring at Du Bai with fierce hatred, biting her lips to keep from making a sound.
Du Bai gently stood up, walked over, and crouched beside Lin Mumu. “Why be so stubborn? It really is irritating.” Seeing the sweat beads on Lin Mumu’s forehead, she must be enduring great pain. As she walked out of the room, she caught a barely audible whisper, “Help me, it hurts so much.”
Du Bai’s lips curved slightly. “I just wanted you to endure the pain you’ve inflicted on others. You only get one chance to call for help, and I don’t look back.” After saying this, she left the room. Much later, Du Bai would wonder if turning back then could have prevented many things and spared many regrets. But avoiding is the most useless escape, and regrets always accompany happiness. Yet these are other people’s issues, irrelevant to her, yet borne out of her choices-a truly indescribable hardship.
