The Villain Is a Chatterbox, and I'm Mute - chapter 2
My throat cannot be cured.
Actually, I could speak before I turned five.
Later, after my mother gave birth to my younger brother, my father grew increasingly displeased with me.
One time, after getting drunk, he grabbed my neck and beat me.
When I woke up, my mother was crying and told me that both my vocal cords were damaged, and that it couldn’t be healed.
Since then, I haven’t spoken a complete sentence.
So when the doctor looked troubled, I didn’t feel much.
But Qin Xu kept asking over and over: “She can say two or three words, maybe there’s still hope?”
“She can make sounds? What did she say?” the doctor asked.
Qin Xu replied with a dark expression: “‘I don’t.'”
The doctor and Qin Xu talked a lot more.
I don’t know the details; Qin Xu told me to wait in the corridor.
He didn’t come out for a whole hour.
Suddenly, someone called my name from the end of the corridor. I looked up-it was the Male Lead, Qi Chen.
Qi Chen is our class president, and also my neighbor.
But in the past eighteen years, I haven’t been close to him.
In fact, we’ve had no interaction at all.
I was puzzled why Qi Chen would call me.
He had already walked up to me, crouched down to meet my gaze, and asked, “Why are you at the hospital? Are you hurt?”
I shook my head and pointed at my throat.
“Here for your throat?” he asked again.
I nodded.
Qi Chen glanced at the tightly closed clinic door. “Who brought you here?”
Even if Qi Chen and I aren’t close, we’ve been neighbors for eighteen years.
He knows my parents would never bring me to see a doctor.
I spoke: “…Qin Xu.”
Just then, the clinic door opened.
Qin Xu stood in the backlight, holding a bag of medicine. When he saw Qi Chen, his face instantly darkened.
Qi Chen spoke first: “Her throat can’t be cured.”
He was, of course, talking about me.
I lowered my head, fiddling with my fingers in silence.
“None of your damn business,” Qin Xu said impatiently. “Have you ever taken her to see a doctor? Do you know what the diagnosis is?”
“Stop acting like you know everything.”
Qin Xu pulled me away. As I turned to look back, Qi Chen was still standing where he was.
“What are you looking at?” Qin Xu’s sarcastic voice came.
He didn’t wait for my answer and continued on his own: “After being desk mates for so long, you only ever say two or three words to me. But when Qi Chen asks, you speak up.”
“At least you said my name.”
“Otherwise…”
Otherwise what? I looked at Qin Xu, asking with my eyes.
He snorted: “Otherwise, I’d get jealous.”
The boy’s eyes were dazzling, making my heart race wildly.
I wrote on a sticky note: [What did the doctor say?]
“It can be cured.”
I stared at him in disbelief, my voice hoarse: “…It can?”
Qin Xu nodded firmly, giving me a carefree smile.
“But… the process is a bit complicated.”
