The President Made Me Trend - Chapter 277 - Shallow and Ignorant
Even though she knew Lu Xuan and Lu Yucheng were brothers, Shen Meng hadn’t expected Lu Xuan’s looks to rival those of Lu Yucheng. Standing at the doorway, she found herself unwittingly captivated.
It wasn’t until Lu Xuan called her name several times that Shen Meng snapped back to reality. With confidence, she stepped forward and extended her right hand, saying, “Mr. Lu, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”
However, her hand hung awkwardly in the air for a long moment. Lu Xuan did not extend his own hand, merely responding with a seemingly gentle, “I’m sorry, Miss Shen. I’m a bit old-fashioned and not fond of physical contact with those I’m not familiar with. I hope you understand.”
“Heh, is that so? Well, there’s nothing to be done then.” Shen Meng realized Lu Xuan was merely being perfunctory. It wasn’t that he disliked shaking hands with strangers; rather, he saw her as tainted, having been involved with too many men, and thus beneath his notice.
Despite the humiliation in Lu Xuan’s gaze, Shen Meng encouraged herself to stay strong. After all, her purpose here wasn’t to win Lu Xuan’s favor but because he had promised her a way back to the dazzling stage of fame.
She was then invited to sit on the sofa. Lu Xuan also rose and walked over. Secretary Wang brought two cups of coffee and then left the room. With only the two of them remaining, Lu Xuan looked at Shen Meng, whose face was full of anticipation. He knew she was anxious but hesitant to speak due to her status.
Not intending to waste much time, he smiled and said, “I hope you didn’t find my call last night too abrupt, Miss Shen. I believe we share common interests, and if there’s a chance to collaborate for mutual benefit, we could make excellent partners.”
“What exactly does Mr. Lu want me to do?” Shen Meng finally couldn’t hold back her curiosity. What did she need to do to regain her fame?
“It’s quite simple.” Lu Xuan didn’t beat around the bush. He set down his coffee cup and looked at Shen Meng. “As long as you can help make Yucheng and Qinghuan divorce, I’ll ensure your path to stardom is as bright as promised.”
“Divorce?” Although Shen Meng wished for Lu Yucheng and Mo Qinghuan to have a rough time, she was more curious about why Lu Xuan would make such a request. He was already the new head of the Lu Group; could he possibly want Mo Qinghuan for himself?
Realizing this, Shen Meng began to feel envious. Why was Mo Qinghuan so much luckier in love than she was? First Lu Yucheng, now Lu Xuan-two successful men both interested in her. The latter was even willing to spend a fortune to help her return to the stage, just to make her divorce?
Her expression turned awkward as she watched Lu Xuan’s face and continued, “I heard Mr. Lu recently returned from abroad, so there might be some scandals about Mo Qinghuan you haven’t heard yet. Although showbiz is like that, with rumors often exaggerated, I can assure you that Mo Qinghuan’s scandals have some truth to them, like being a diva and having ambiguous relationships with male stars.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Lu Xuan wasn’t particularly interested in Shen Meng’s words, but he vaguely sensed that this shallow and ignorant woman might have misunderstood his intentions. He began to doubt whether she could truly accomplish the task he had given her.
Shen Meng was unaware of Lu Xuan’s doubts and continued her narrative, “You see, Mo Qinghuan just has a face that men find attractive, and she’s quite skilled at manipulation. That’s why so many men are wrapped around her finger. But I believe those men must regret it now. After all, who would want to fall for a woman with such a chaotic personal life, who’s been divorced once already?”
As she spoke, Shen Meng’s eyes were fixed on Lu Xuan, as if hoping her words would make him lose interest in Mo Qinghuan completely.
However, she was caught off guard when Lu Xuan’s expression turned impatient. He frowned, and his smile grew cold as he looked at Shen Meng and asked, “Miss Shen, your imagination is vivid, but unfortunately, your intelligence seems lacking. Can I really trust you with this task? Why do I feel like I might have chosen the wrong person?”
Lu Xuan’s words made Shen Meng realize she had been rambling. She quickly raised her hand and swore in front of him, “Mr. Lu, please give me a chance. I swear, if I can’t break up Lu Yucheng and Mo Qinghuan, I’ll quit showbiz for good, and you won’t have to lift a finger.”
Her eyes were filled with pleading and humility. Although Lu Xuan wasn’t a soft-hearted person, he had to admit that Shen Meng was the easiest to manipulate right now. She seemed willing to do anything to outshine Mo Qinghuan.
So, he went along with it and said, “Alright, I’ll reluctantly trust you this time, Miss Shen. Just don’t disappoint me. After all, your future in the industry depends on how well you perform.”
Having secured Lu Xuan’s support, Shen Meng seemed to regain her confidence in life. She thanked him profusely before leaving the Lu Group.
After she left, Secretary Wang re-entered the office and asked Lu Xuan, who had resumed his work, “Do you really trust this woman who seems so foolish, Mr. Lu?”
“The more foolish a person is, the easier they are to use,” Lu Xuan replied with a cold smile. “Besides, she’s willing to do anything to surpass Mo Qinghuan. Didn’t you notice?”
“I’ll have someone keep a close eye on Miss Shen’s every move,” Secretary Wang said, already prepared without needing further instructions from Lu Xuan.
Meanwhile, Lu Yucheng saw on TV that Lu Xuan had officially joined the Lu Group. Although he was angry, he knew he had more important matters to attend to, like taking care of Mother Lu. So, he had been shuttling between the Lu family home and the nursing home.
Mo Qinghuan, on the other hand, was still at home waiting for the police investigation results. But it had been over three months since the poisoning incident, and there was still no news. She decided to call Huo-Jie and said, “Huo-Jie, you know quite a few private detectives, right? Find the most capable one for me. I want to hire them.”
“Qinghuan, what do you need a private detective for?” Huo-Jie was puzzled. Ever since Lu Yucheng was ousted from the Lu Group, he and Mo Qinghuan had been living a semi-reclusive life. Her sudden request for a detective made Huo-Jie wonder if she intended to investigate Lu Xuan.
However, Mo Qinghuan replied, “I must uncover the truth behind the poisoning. I won’t be at peace until I do.”
She had a nagging feeling that the mastermind’s identity wasn’t simple. Otherwise, why hadn’t the police found anything after three months? She didn’t want to wait any longer and decided to take action herself.
