Chapter 7
The business trip ended, and upon returning to the company, I immediately started the handover process. I didn’t expect that the person I would be working with for the handover would be Chen Panqing.
“I thought about it, and it’s true that I need more daily interactions with Rubai to cultivate a deep relationship. It also gives me a chance to clean up your mess, so I actively applied to him for this position.”
Chen Panqing’s original position was a bank teller, but she smoothly took over my work and handled it with ease. She became familiar with the work procedures in about a week, much earlier than expected.
My original profession wasn’t a special assistant either, but Shao Rubai forced me to work by his side. He sweet-talked me into changing jobs, killing my dreams, and making me completely his subordinate. It was only later when he suggested I stay home every day and wait for him to return that I gradually realized his sinister intentions. Now that he was using the same old trick on another woman, I still wanted to advise Chen Panqing, “Don’t just listen to all of Shao Rubai’s arrangements…”
“You don’t need to pass on your failed experiences to me anymore,” Chen Panqing said impatiently. “Rubai loves me very much now, and I love him too. We’ll be very happy, so please keep your promise and disappear from our sight.”
One man’s poison is another man’s honey. I truly was meddling.
But it also meant a complete goodbye to the past. Just as I was excitedly preparing to leave work, the delivery man handed me nine hundred ninety-nine roses. The card was signed “Fish Who Took the Bait.” My colleagues were all incredibly envious, eagerly asking me who this “fish” was. Chen Panqing also teased me.
“So you already found someone else, no wonder you were willing to abandon your current one.”
The commotion attracted Shao Rubai’s attention. He emerged from his office, highly displeased, and publicly reprimanded me, “This is an office, not a place for personal displays of affection, Lin Nanlu, put your flowers away!”
What a hypocrite, I silently complained. I placed the large bouquet of flowers, which made my arm ache, into Shao Rubai’s arms. He was taken aback, almost thinking I was going to confess to him. “Lin Nanlu, what do you mean? I won’t accept-”
I interrupted him, saying through the vibrant red flowers, “Please return them to Shi Song.” Shao Rubai recognized his friend’s handwriting on the card, his face alternating between green and white. “Lin Nanlu, come to my office, we need to talk.”
I sat across from Shao Rubai, calmly watching him, looking superior and bossy. “You truly are as Panqing said, a fickle woman. Failing to seduce me, you so quickly extended your claws to my friend.”
Shao Rubai sat behind his desk, hands clasped, looking down at me arrogantly. “You only met him once at the hospital, and you’re charming enough to make Shi Song publicly pursue you?”
“I met him more than once,” I said honestly.
“Where, when, what did you talk about, and how far have things progressed between you?” Shao Rubai’s rapid-fire questions almost made me think he had regained his memory.
“CEO Shao, this is my private matter, isn’t it?”
“Shi Song is my best friend. I won’t allow him to be hurt,” Shao Rubai said self-righteously, but his body reached across the desk, placing his hand on my shoulder. “If you’re really so desperate to find a sugar daddy for patronage, I can reluctantly take you in…”
“I used to only think you were overbearing and unreasonable, but I never realized how self-important you are.” I gripped his unwanted hand hard, and as Shao Rubai gasped in pain, I flung it back onto his chest.
