Gu Xiaoai lay on the massage chair, staring at the TV screen, but not absorbing a single word. Her mind was filled with the image of Li Juefeng confidently commanding from his desk.
He wasn’t as despicable as she had imagined, and this realization made her uneasy. It even stirred a restless anxiety within her.
She grabbed a bottle of red wine from the cabinet and poured herself a full glass, downing it in one go. The sweet yet slightly bitter taste spread through her mouth.
After finishing two whole bottles of wine, Gu Xiaoai felt dizzy and unsteady as she stumbled to the grand piano. The stark black and white keys left her momentarily dazed.
She hadn’t touched any musical instrument for nine years.
Extending her slender yet slightly rough hands, she remembered how they had helped her aunt pickle fish, carried sacks of rice, and endured oil splatters while learning to cook. She had even clung to a tree for an entire afternoon to secretly photograph news, leaving her hands scratched by the rough bark.
They were no longer the hands of a pianist.
“What are you doing here?” Li Juefeng’s voice suddenly broke the silence.
Gu Xiaoai turned her head to see him leaning casually against the doorway in a bathrobe, his tall figure slightly swaying in her blurred vision.
“Weren’t you in a meeting?” she asked, having sensibly left to avoid overhearing any business secrets.
Li Juefeng glanced at her flushed face and the two empty wine bottles on the piano, his voice calm and unreadable. “You’ve been drinking?”
“Yeah.” Gu Xiaoai nodded heavily, grinning like a child. “Want a glass?”
She reached for a glass, but her vision swayed, and her hand grasped nothing. The glass fell to the floor, shattering into pieces.
Is this girl drunk and foolish?
Li Juefeng noticed her damp hair, his eyes turning cold as he walked away.
“Hey…” Gu Xiaoai watched his retreating figure in confusion. It was just a broken glass; why was he upset? She could pick it up.
He must think she’s uncultured.
But Gu Xiaoai… nine years ago, she was well-educated!
Her body swayed as she crouched down to pick up the broken glass. The alcohol clouded her vision, making the shards blur into three. As she reached out, a sharp piece pierced her fingertip, causing her to cry out in pain, “Ah…”
Blood gushed from her finger.
The pain was excruciating.
“What are you doing?!” Li Juefeng’s angry shout echoed, “Gu Xiaoai, let go!”
