- Chapter 34 - From Now On, Come Over Every Night
Overwhelmed with an unexplainable frustration, Gu Xiaoai stared at the explosive tabloid photos of a star’s scandal without a single coherent thought in her mind. She could barely scratch out a rough article by the evening, dragging herself through it step by step.
By the time she was ready to head home, her colleagues at the Magazine Publisher, including her uncle, had already left. Just as she gathered her things to leave, her phone rang. The screen lit up with the nickname she had given Li Juefeng: Tyrant.
“Hello, this is Gu Xiaoai,” she answered flatly.
“Where are you?” Li Juefeng’s cold, indifferent voice came through the line. Before she could respond, he added, “Come to my house.”
With that, the call was abruptly ended.
Listening to the repetitive beeping sound on the other end, Gu Xiaoai was tempted to smash her phone.
To him, it seemed like she had no rights of her own, as though her schedule revolved entirely around his whims.
Bastard.
She muttered a curse under her breath and, despite her exhaustion, took a cab to Deep Water Bay.
“Miss Gu, you’re here. Mr. Li is having dinner,” said housekeeper Tong, who opened the door to the European-style Villa and led her to the dining room.
Li Juefeng sat impeccably dressed at the dining table, eating his meal without sparing her a glance. In his low, commanding voice, he said, “Go make Sweet and Sour Fish.”
“…”
Standing speechlessly at the brightly lit entrance to the dining room, Gu Xiaoai wanted nothing more than to slap herself. Why had she brought up Sweet and Sour Fish in the first place? And of course, he remembered.
When she remained frozen in place, Li Juefeng lifted his eyes and shot her a cold, piercing glare. “Still not moving?”
Fine. She’d do it.
He was not someone she could afford to cross.
Dropping her bag at the door, Gu Xiaoai headed to the kitchen. The Li Family’s kitchen was sleek and high-end, elevating even the act of cooking into something sophisticated.
Splashing her face with cool water to shake off her weariness, Gu Xiaoai tied on an apron and began deftly preparing the fish. She cleaned it, scaled it, and, inevitably, ended up reeking of fish before she started cooking it.
Sweet and Sour Fish was her specialty-a dish she had learned from Chu Shixiu.
She loved the way the sweet-and-sour flavors danced on her palate. Chu Shixiu had once gone out of his way to learn the recipe just so he could make it for her, even teaching her how to cook it. Back then, she could never get it right. She hated the smell of raw fish and detested cooking.
But later, when she had nothing left in life, she learned to clean and cook fish with remarkable efficiency. Making a simple dish like Sweet and Sour Fish had become second nature.
“Clang-”
A set of keys landed on the countertop beside her with a jarring impact.
Turning her head, she saw Li Juefeng leaning against the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, watching her with a gaze that brooked no argument. His tone was domineering, leaving no room for refusal.
“From now on, come over every night.”
