- Chapter 15 - How to Beg a Man 3
The group of boys surrounded the girl, who was dressed in a pure white princess dress. Her long hair was pinned with a butterfly clip, and her face always carried a faint smile as she listened to everything with apparent pleasure.
However, he could see right through her. He noticed the pride and impatience hidden in her eyes. She clearly had no interest in mingling with these boys.
Like an arrogant peacock, her demeanor was detached and lofty.
Suddenly, the girl glanced in his direction. She took a coin from one of the boys nearby and walked over to him. Standing on tiptoes, she slipped the coin into his shirt pocket, then turned to the boys and said, “If you’ve got spare change, why not do some good and help the poor?”
Her tone was unbearably arrogant yet oddly matter-of-fact.
But it wasn’t real compassion-he could tell by the sheer disdain in her gaze as she looked at him. After tossing the coin, she even pulled out a tissue to wipe her hand, as if afraid it had gotten dirty.
“Alright, alright, Gu Xiaoai says it, so it must be true,” one of the boys chimed in. The others quickly followed suit, pulling out their pocket change and throwing it at him.
Coins scattered all over the ground.
With his toughness in fights, it wouldn’t take even a third of his strength to knock these kids to the ground. But this time, he didn’t retaliate; he simply stood there.
“Hey, pick it up!”
“Yeah, we’re giving you money-what are you waiting for? Hurry up and crawl over to collect it!”
The boys shouted at him, their voices full of condescension.
Just then, the girl threw away the tissue and interrupted them with a smile. “Come on, let’s go. Even the poor have dignity. How could he possibly pick it up while you’re standing here?”
She left without giving him another glance.
The boys clustered around her as they walked off, orbiting her like stars around the moon.
She hadn’t said anything overly offensive. On the surface, she was even performing an act of “kindness.”
But she made him feel humiliation for the first time-the kind of scorn and trampling that crushed his dignity.
To her and her privileged group of Young Ladies and gentlemen, “poor people” were nothing but beggars.
People living at the bottom existed only as a contrast to highlight their noble superiority.
It was just a random encounter. But from that day forward, Gu Xiaoai’s name etched itself deep into his heart-not merely as a name but as a reminder of the mark left on him from being someone beneath others.
Years later, he couldn’t believe how he still recognized her immediately.
Perhaps it was because the innate pride and aloofness in her eyes hadn’t changed, even though it was all so flimsy and easy to shatter.
The ringing of his phone interrupted Li Juefeng’s thoughts. He answered the call-it was Wang Zhao, his secretary.
“Mr. Li, I’ve finished investigating everything about Gu Xiaoai that you asked me to.”
“Speak.”
