Taboo Mage - Chapter 6 - The Dead Also Rush for Marriage
Li He took a few gulps before stammering, “I remember, your family deals with ghosts, right?”
I quickly waved my hand, not wanting this misunderstanding to escalate. Unknown to him, although I am a yin-yang life amulet master, I’ve always been timid and particularly wary of ghosts and spirits.
Seeing me deny it, Li He’s face quickly turned into a mask of disappointment. His hand shook as he held the cup, and he looked like he was on the verge of tears again.
Sensing that something was off, I tentatively said that I indeed knew a little about such matters, but not as much as he imagined. I asked him to share his problem-perhaps I could offer some advice.
Hearing this, Li He heaved a sigh and slowly began to tell his story.
There are always some ghost-related stories circulating on the internet, the simplest being about the Pen Spirit and the Saucer Spirit. Some people, with various intentions, try their luck. The lucky ones avoid any mishap, while the unlucky ones, well, they actually encounter something.
Li He was one of the unlucky ones.
Half a month ago, he and his roommates invited a Saucer Spirit. To their dismay, they actually summoned a spirit. This type of spirit, to be blunt, is just a wandering ghost. Once summoned, it’s not easy to get rid of it.
Coincidentally, although Li He had a slight limp, he was still quite handsome. The ghost took a liking to him and insisted on becoming his ghost bride.
Desperate and too scared to inform his family, Li He thought of me.
After listening to his story, I felt troubled. I was only adept at making life amulets, exorcism was not my forte, and besides, I was timid.
Probably reading the expression on my face, Li He glanced at me, then with a ‘thud’ sound, kneeled down and grabbed onto my knees.
“Qing Shu, please don’t lie to me! I know you must understand exorcism! Please help me this once!”
Li He’s crying was getting on my nerves. For a grown man to cry like this, he must be truly terrified.
“It’s not that I don’t want to help you, it’s just…”
“Brother Gu, Liu Yineng just called. He said you need to hurry up and deal with the Resentful Spirit attached to the life amulet!”
Before I could finish speaking, Ah Biao pushed open the door and shouted at the top of his lungs. His voice echoed around the entrance to the alley, making my eardrums ache.
Li He cried even louder upon hearing Ah Biao’s words.
I realized there was no escaping this situation. Reluctantly, I agreed to take a look at Li He’s dormitory in the afternoon.
After sending Li He on his way, I packed a few essentials into my bag.
Li He did well on his university entrance exam and got into a school right next to ours. When the city was first planned, it wasn’t done as meticulously as it is now. The leaders would just draw a few lines, and a building would go up, resulting in a lack of living space for the growing population.
As a result, many recent urban development plans have included former burial grounds. These areas are usually repurposed for schools and police stations, as these places are said to have strong yang energy, which can suppress malevolent spirits.
That’s likely why Li He was able to summon a Saucer Spirit so easily.
When I arrived at the university, Li He and a roommate were already waiting for me at the entrance. Without much small talk, we headed straight for the dormitory building.
Li He’s dorm was on the third floor. As soon as we started up the stairs, a chilling cold hit me. I glanced over at Li He, who seemed completely unaware of it, as did his roommate. They just kept their heads down and walked on.
How could they not feel this icy cold? Thinking back, I hadn’t noticed any dark energy around Li He in the shop earlier.
A thought crossed my mind: could this Ghost be a benign one?
Standing at the door of the dorm room, Li He hesitated. His face was twisted with anxiety, his eyes glaring at the wooden door as if he wanted to bore a hole through it.
I understood his reluctance; living with a woman forcing you to marry her would be daunting for anyone, especially when the woman is a Ghost.
I stepped forward and patted Li He on the shoulder to reassure him. Then I pushed the door open.
With a creak, the door swung open, and a deep, eerie voice came from inside.
“You’re finally back. If you didn’t return soon, I would have come to find you.”
Goosebumps immediately covered my skin. Summoning all my courage, I stepped inside.
In the center of the dormitory room stood a man wearing a qipao, holding a delicate pose with one finger extended and batting his eyelashes seductively at Li He, who was frozen in the doorway.
What unsettled me the most was that, despite his rugged beard and muscular build straining the fabric of the qipao, his lips were painted with bright red lipstick.
Li He gave me a look of sheer despair before stepping inside and sinking into a chair, ignoring the possessed man entirely.
“Li He, you heartless scoundrel! You want to get someone to get rid of me?” The man suddenly screamed in a shrill, high-pitched voice, before lunging at me with his hands outstretched.
Things escalated quickly, but luckily I reacted in time. I jumped up from the chair, ran behind him, and delivered a swift kick to his back.
I wasn’t sure how he identified me, but I knew that evading him was no longer an option-the man’s previously somewhat clear eyes were now cloudy and drool dribbled from his mouth, his gaze fixated on me like a predator eyeing its prey.
“Damn!” I shouted, signaling Li He and his roommate to make a run for it while I frantically rummaged through my bag.
“Li He! You cannot leave! You cannot leave!” The rough voice, now higher-pitched, sounded incredibly eerie.
I was the last to leave the dorm room. As I reached the doorway, I grabbed a dumbbell from a nearby shelf and hurled it at the possessed man, knocking him to the ground. In that moment of opportunity, I kicked the door shut and took the keys from Li He, locking the door tightly.
“Will… will she come out again?” Li He, trembling, clung to my arm, clearly seeing me as his savior.
I shook my head, uncertain. Spirits shouldn’t be able to move freely unless they have a host; otherwise, they would be trapped where they died. But the being inside seemed far from ordinary-its attire indicated it had been around for a long time.
A long time? Perfect! This could be useful in subduing the Resentful Spirit within Liu Yineng’s tiger head life amulet!
Faced with a seemingly impossible situation, a sudden glimmer of hope made me smile.
“So, Qing Shu, can you handle this?” Li He, seeing my expression, caught on and asked excitedly.
I nodded, “I can’t be certain, but I can give it a try. We’ve been through a lot together-I won’t leave you hanging.”
