Taboo Mage - Chapter 32 - Stepping into the Official Arena
I roughly understood what the fatty meant-another misfortune amulet.
With Yang Shuo’s previous experience, I made the misfortune amulet that very afternoon. The fatty threw down a stack of money and waddled away, saying it was the remaining balance, which would be paid after the amulet took effect.
If Lin Huan hadn’t held me back, I would have almost cursed at him on the spot.
After the fatty left, I felt a lingering discomfort. It’s not that I’m a petty man; it’s just that the other party had no professional ethics whatsoever.
I made a call to Xu-Jie. Xu-Jie was all smiles over the phone, saying nice things for quite some time. After hanging up, my phone buzzed with a notification of a five-figure deposit into my bank card.
Xu-Jie is truly reliable.
A few days later, the fatty came back, beaming, and told me that the person blocking his wealth path had a car accident and was now in a vegetative state in the hospital. Thanks to the recommendation of an old leader, he had successfully moved up.
To show his gratitude, the fatty brought a sum of money to settle the balance, and I accepted it as a matter of course.
However, after sending the fatty off, I treated Xu-Jie to a meal and returned the money she had previously sent me.
Because of the fatty, I managed to pave a way into the official arena. Within three days, five people came looking for me, all without exception requesting the creation of misfortune amulets and official luck amulets.
These less powerful life amulets were now easy tasks for me. I even started considering whether I should mass-produce these highly demanded amulets.
Fortunately, Lin Huan stopped me in time, repeatedly reminding me to be mindful of the steps! The obstacle!
After making several moves in the official arena, I decided to take a few days off to maintain my sense of mystery.
That day, Chen Li, whom I hadn’t seen in a long time, suddenly visited, with a crying woman in tow.
I had a very good impression of Chen Li and immediately stood up to welcome him. Next to me, Lin Huan saw Chen Li and her eyes lit up, sticking to him like super glue.
The scene of a superfan meeting their lifelong idol could be nothing less than this.
Chen Li, unfazed, shook Lin Huan’s hand politely and then introduced the person behind him-a rich merchant’s widow.
I looked at the woman in the black dress with some surprise. She was in her early thirties but already a widow. However, given her stunning appearance, it was unsurprising yet logical.
The widow’s name was Limei, the third wife of the late merchant. The merchant died suddenly of a heart attack last month, leaving behind a large fortune. Limei inherited several villas and a foundation, officially becoming a bona fide wealthy woman.
Last week, while out socializing, Limei met a young man and fell in love at first sight. The man, however, was already married, and Limei wanted to find a way to break up his family.
I was taken aback. With Limei’s looks and wealth, she could easily find any pretty boy she wanted. Why go after a married man?
After much hesitation, Limei explained. The young man was actually her childhood sweetheart. Limei had ditched him after she got involved with the rich merchant. Now she wanted to get back with him, but he had already started his own family.
I looked at Chen Li, puzzled as to why someone of his business stature would bother with such a trivial and meddling affair.
Chen Li coughed lightly and directed Limei to go with Lin Huan to rest, before explaining to me that he was the largest shareholder in the foundation that Limei had inherited.
Chen Li had always wanted to take full control of the foundation. Limei had now agreed that if Chen Li could help her win back her childhood sweetheart, she would transfer the foundation to him at a minimal price through an under-the-table deal.
“If this deal goes through, you’ll get a share of the foundation,” Chen Li said, holding a cigar and smiling at me.
I felt a lump in my throat and sighed softly, looking down.
Limei touched up her makeup in the restroom. When she returned to the shop, her fair face looked even more radiant and alluring. No wonder there’s a saying: when a daughter mourns, she is most beautiful.
Dressed in a black long dress, Limei easily aroused a man’s protective instincts.
“Mr. Gu, have you made up your mind?”
Limei sat somewhat nervously beside Chen Li, her eyes fixed on me like a doe. My heart couldn’t help but skip a beat.
“Don’t worry, Boss Chen is an old friend of mine. Anyone he introduces, I’ll certainly do my best to help,” I reassured her with a smile, finalizing the deal.
That afternoon, Limei drove me to meet her old flame, the man for whom she was willing to give up the Foundation.
They had arranged to meet in a garden behind a mid-range residential complex. Limei sat on a swing, having changed into a white dress that made her look pure and enchanting, almost like a university student untouched by society’s corruption.
I sat at a stone table behind the swing set, casually chatting with an old man nearby. My peripheral vision kept darting towards Limei’s direction.
Half an hour later, a man in casual attire hurried over. From a distance, Limei stood up, her face lit with joy.
I scrutinized the man as he came closer. He looked refined and scholarly, maintaining a gentlemanly demeanor even as Limei clung to him like an adhesive. He kept a respectful distance, underscoring his noble character.
He was indeed a gentleman.
I couldn’t help but admire him. Once, I had hoped to become such a man-elegant, witty, with a sharp gaze.
But then, remembering that my task was to disrupt his family, a wave of guilt surged from my feet, making me shiver.
Suddenly, I saw a woman briskly walking toward us from the park entrance. Her long hair flowed, but her face was contorted with uncontrollable anger. Most notably, she had a prominent baby bump.
Sensing trouble, I quickly stood up and bolted towards Limei.
Sure enough, just as I reached Limei, the woman stormed over and slapped her in the face.
Limei couldn’t dodge in time and took the hit squarely, five fingerprints instantly rising on her cheek.
Watching this family drama unfold before me, I stood stunned for three seconds before hastily dragging Limei away.
Limei sobbed all the way back to the shop and continued to sniffle even when we arrived.
This whole mess was clearly her fault, but I couldn’t bring myself to admonish her in person. I could only sit on the sofa, waiting for her to cry herself out.
