Taboo Mage - Chapter 240 - Encouraging the Mistress to Visit
All causes and effects, it seems, are already arranged by fate.
After waiting for my response for a while, the hope in Li Mi’s eyes extinguished once more. She shook her head with a resigned smile.
“Brother Gu, did you call me out today for something specific?”
“Yeah, I need your help with something regarding Hu Zhipeng.”
Li Mi looked up at me, puzzled. “Isn’t Hu Zhipeng’s matter already handed over to Zhou Qifang? Why do you still need to worry about it?”
“It’s nothing, just lending a hand,” I replied casually, not wanting to dwell on the topic.
Seeing my indifferent facade, Li Mi suddenly burst into tears, covering her face. I was at a loss for what to do.
I can’t handle women crying.
I quickly reviewed what I had just said, convinced I hadn’t said anything upsetting. So why was she suddenly crying?
I handed her a few tissues, trying to comfort her. “Come on, don’t cry. If there’s something bothering you, tell me. Maybe I can help.”
No sooner had I spoken than Li Mi began sobbing loudly, drawing the attention of nearby couples who turned to look at us, making my scalp tingle with discomfort.
I rubbed my forehead, feeling a bit impatient. Dealing with women has never been my forte, unless, of course, they’re my own.
Watching Li Mi cry so miserably, I thought maybe I had indeed said something wrong, making her feel worse. Perhaps it was best to keep quiet and let her cry it out.
But Li Mi’s tears seemed endless, and the disapproving glances from the surrounding couples made me feel unjustly accused, as if I should be comforting my girlfriend.
Li Mi cried for over half an hour before she finally tired herself out. Sniffling, she looked up at me and said, “Brother Gu, I knew it. Even if you don’t want to help, you wouldn’t just leave me to fend for myself. So, you’re helping Zhou Qifang because of me, right?”
“Huh?” I blinked in confusion. How did she come to that conclusion?
I’m helping Zhou Qifang because I was coerced by him and Chi Rui. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother with this mess.
But somehow, in Li Mi’s eyes, it turned into me doing it for her?
For the first time, I doubted my ability to communicate with women.
Li Mi continued, sniffling, “Brother Gu, I knew you still care about me. But if you cared, why didn’t you say so back then? If you had, I wouldn’t have gone with Hu Zhipeng and ended up like this.”
I opened my mouth, considering whether to explain, but seeing the hopeful look in her eyes, I swallowed my words.
Zhou Qifang was serious; Li Mi’s right hand was doomed. Why should I crush her hopes now?
“Um, Li Mi, now that you’ve finished crying, can we talk business?” I asked, trying to steer the conversation.
Li Mi nodded, looking at me with a mix of resentment and expectation.
Under her intense gaze, I continued, “Here’s the thing. To help Hu Zhipeng, we need to get Feng Suya’s hair. Hu Zhipeng said he’ll try, but he can’t guarantee it, because Feng Suya won’t see him or let him in.”
“I know. Feng Suya stays home all day, not letting anyone in or going out herself,” Li Mi nodded.
I nodded back, “So, we’ve thought it over, and you’re the only one who can help.”
“Brother Gu, what exactly do you want me to do?” Li Mi asked, frowning in confusion.
I cleared my throat, feeling a bit embarrassed to voice the plan. After all, encouraging a mistress to confront the wife just to get a strand of hair was quite the audacious idea.
“Well, Li Mi, since Feng Suya isn’t seeing anyone, I thought she might… see you…”
“Me? You want me to go see Feng Suya? Brother Gu, are you trying to get me killed?” Li Mi’s face twisted with a complex expression.
I scratched my chin, silently cursing Chi Rui for coming up with such a harebrained scheme. Only he could think of something like this.
“Uh, theoretically speaking… you’re right. But we’re out of options, and since you’re willing to make such a big sacrifice for Hu Zhipeng, I thought you might…”
I trailed off, feeling like a jerk. I couldn’t help but think I was acting like a scumbag.
Li Mi bit her lip, staring at me intently, lost in thought.
Her gaze made me uneasy, and I considered making a quick exit. But before I could, Li Mi nodded.
“I’ll do it.”
“Are you sure?” I asked, my voice rising in disbelief.
Li Mi nodded again. “I’m sure. Meeting Feng Suya is something I’ve rehearsed in my mind countless times. If I want Hu Zhipeng and Feng Suya to divorce, I have to meet her. Since it’s inevitable, I might as well do it now.”
I stared at her, mouth agape.
The woman who had been crying her heart out moments ago now seemed like a different person, her eyes shining with determination, as if fueled by adrenaline.
I swallowed hard, shaking my head in silent admiration. Women are truly formidable.
I was once again grateful that I hadn’t gotten involved with Li Mi. Otherwise, I’d be the one in hot water now.
After confirming the details with Li Mi, I drove back home.
As soon as I walked in, Chi Rui rushed over, his face full of curiosity. “How did it go?”
I raised an eyebrow and told him, “When I take action, is there anything I can’t accomplish?”
“Impressive, Gu Qingshu. It seems Li Mi really loves you. Good thing I sent you,” Chi Rui said, slapping my shoulder.
The more I thought about it, the more something felt off. Watching Chi Rui walk away with a grin, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d been set up.
Later in the afternoon, Hu Zhipeng called. He had tried to see Feng Suya, but she threatened to break his legs if he dared show up.
I shivered at the thought, relieved to still be single.
