Taboo Mage - Chapter 115 - Returning to Normal
Before I could finish speaking, Chi Rui had already grabbed Jue Chi anxiously and asked him.
Jue Chi nodded and slowly approached the person on the bed. I followed behind, watching as Jue Chi sat cross-legged on the floor, placing one hand on the great-grandfather’s forehead and muttering under his breath while turning the prayer beads in his other hand.
I stood there for quite a while, unable to decipher what was happening. The great-grandfather lying on the bed remained with his eyes closed, showing no signs of change.
After more than half an hour, the younger members of the Chi Family standing around the bed grew impatient, shouting that they wanted to throw Jue Chi out. Holding the copper coin sword, I stood next to Jue Chi, constantly on alert for those who might attack.
After some time, Jue Chi stood up from the ground, took off his Kasaya, and covered the great-grandfather with it.
When the Kasaya covered the great-grandfather’s entire body, he suddenly began to tremble uncontrollably. His eyelids lifted to reveal the whites of his eyes, his mouth twitched, and his thin fingers clenched together.
I was taken aback by the sudden occurrence and turned to see Jue Chi’s reaction. His expression remained unchanged, and he even smiled and nodded slightly upon seeing the great-grandfather’s condition.
What exactly is this bald monk trying to do?
The younger members of the Chi Family, seeing their patriarch in such a state, began to gather around, shouting that Jue Chi was an evil monk and demanding that he be thrown out.
The situation was getting out of control, so I turned to call out to Chi Rui, only to find him frowning and standing there, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with his relatives’ reactions.
“Chi Rui, for crying out loud, say something!” I kicked Chi Rui’s leg and whispered urgently.
Chi Rui glared at me without saying a word and instead looked at Jue Chi with suspicion.
It seemed even Chi Rui was doubtful about what Jue Chi had done to the great-grandfather…
At this point, unless the great-grandfather wakes up, there’s no way Jue Chi and I can explain ourselves, no matter how many words we have.
I turned to look at the great-grandfather, who was still twitching vigorously, his shaking seemingly strong enough to break the bed. Seeing this, I couldn’t help but pray silently.
Please, let nothing go wrong, or Jue Chi and I might really get beaten to death by these people…
Suddenly, amidst the deafening noise of the crowd around us, the great-grandfather abruptly sat up from the bed. His once-muddy eyes now looked clear and bright, though still lacking any vitality.
“Great-grandfather?” Chi Rui stepped forward and called softly.
The great-grandfather turned his head, his gaze falling on Chi Rui, “Rui?”
Chi Rui nodded and hugged the great-grandfather excitedly. Witnessing this sudden turn of events, I didn’t fully understand what had happened, but my intuition told me that Jue Chi and I had narrowly escaped a dire situation.
The younger members of the Chi Family rushed forward, crying dramatically. I pulled Jue Chi aside so as not to interfere with their dramatic show of familial affection.
“What happened? What’s the situation?” Once everyone calmed down, Chi Rui turned to Jue Chi with questions.
Jue Chi clasped his hands together and said solemnly, “The female ghost possessing your great-grandfather was forcibly summoned using an incantation. Although her resentment was strong, she couldn’t stay in the human world for long. To subdue her in a short time, a spirit with greater spiritual power was needed. Thus, I went to a temple in Shenyang yesterday and found a spirit there, returning with it last night.”
“And now that spirit is…”
“Upon the Kasaya.”
I frowned, pondering the meaning behind Jue Chi’s words. The female ghost, due to receiving a drop of Jue Chi’s blood, had been freed from her vengeful form and transformed directly into a natural spirit. Such an entity must be suppressed by another natural spirit.
To my knowledge, I only knew of one such spirit, the one I had returned to the temple’s red candle. Did that mean…
I conveyed my suspicions to Jue Chi, who did not respond verbally but simply gave me a knowing smile.
Sure enough, Jue Chi had actually gone to seek out that spirit. Although I wasn’t sure how he managed to persuade the spirit to help, everything was resolved successfully in the end.
Because of the possession by the female ghost, the great-grandfather’s health was affected, and he remained bedridden for two days before gradually recovering. On the third day, Jue Chi and I were discussing whether we should stay longer or head back.
Suddenly, Chi Zhong knocked on the door, saying that the great-grandfather wanted to invite us to a meal. Typically, I’m not keen on attending such dubious gatherings.
Moreover, back then, the great-grandfather had colluded with that fraud Lama Duoren to deceive Jue Chi and me for the sake of curing his eyesight.
I’ve kept this incident in mind, and rescuing his life from the female ghost was already more than enough of a noble gesture from me. If he has any other demands, it will depend on whether the terms of exchange are enticing enough.
Noticing my hesitation, Chi Zhong repeatedly assured me that the great-grandfather merely wanted to express his gratitude and had no other intentions. Finally, I agreed to attend the meal.
Once Chi Zhong left, I lowered my voice and told Jue Chi to stay calm and not act rashly, instructing him to follow my lead.
Jue Chi simply smiled without responding. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes and, after reminding him several times, went out with him to the meal.
By the time we arrived at the great-grandfather’s courtyard, the dining table was already set. Seated directly opposite was the great-grandfather, still wearing a Tang suit, with Chi Rui on his left and Chi Hong on his right. Bai Jie and Chi Zhong were nowhere to be seen, as they seemed to have been sent away.
As soon as I walked in, Chi Rui stood up with a smile and led Jue Chi and me to our seats. Although I was in a relatively good mood, seeing Chi Hong there piqued my curiosity about what the great-grandfather had planned.
Why keep such a fraud around?
Once everyone had gathered, the great-grandfather made some casual remarks before the meal commenced. Following my policy of eating more when hungry and speaking less, I kept my head down, focusing on the food in front of me.
Chi Rui and Chi Hong were unusually quiet today, while the great-grandfather made light conversation, topic-hopping casually. Halfway through the meal, he finally steered the conversation to the main issue.
With a pleasant smile, he asked Jue Chi which Master he apprenticed under. Jue Chi remained silent, glancing at me. I subtly shook my head, indicating that his non-response was appropriate.
Perhaps our little exchange was too obvious, as Chi Hong chuckled and asked, “What is it? Does Master Jue Chi need Mr. Gu’s approval to speak?”
