- Chapter 165 - Acknowledging Relations
Mu Linlang originally had no desire to keep living, but when she laid eyes on the child, her heart unexpectedly softened. The child was so beautiful-though her initial intent for taking her wasn’t purely for the sake of having a child, she couldn’t help but be moved by the bond of blood and family. She willingly took up the task of raising the child, giving her a warm name.
Lin Zhaonuan-like the morning sun that bathes the earth in warmth and hope. It was a beautiful name. Mu Linlang wanted this child, with whom she might not have had any tangible connection, to have a good life.
Before his death, Yuan Junyuan entrusted both mother and daughter to Zhou Yun. Unfortunately, Zhou Yun was killed before he could reveal the truth to his family, caught up in the absurd fight for power within the Zhou Family. As a result, the Zhou Family remained completely unaware of this hidden truth.
These events weren’t overly complicated, but when one thought about them in detail, they came across as a bit laughable and absurd.
“Do you want to be acknowledged by the Yuan Family?” Chen Zhao asked the young girl once more. Now, her status was even greater than that of the Yuan Family. Whether or not to return to them would be a completely different scenario from before.
Su Yang thought for a long moment. In truth, it didn’t make much difference to her at this point, but it seemed to hold tremendous significance for the Yuan Family. Yuan Junyuan was her nominal father and a brother whose fate remained unknown to this day.
Yuan Junyuan had given up his life to protect Yuan Junming and Yuan Yan. In their hearts, their elder brother would always be an unhealed wound. Yet if she were to acknowledge the Yuan Family now, how much more ironic would that be for Shang Yue?
Turning her head, her close friend would suddenly become the niece of her father’s first wife…
The thought made Su Yang’s head spin. She ducked into Chen Zhao’s arms, escaping the internal turmoil. He chuckled softly-this little girl was getting better and better at acting coquettish. But what could he do? He was utterly charmed by her antics now.
“What’s wrong? Thinking about something troublesome again?”
“I’m just wondering… what Yueyue would think about all this…” Su Yang murmured in frustration, but the man before her chuckled lightly and said, “If you want to know what she thinks, why not just ask her directly?”
Su Yang shot him a skeptical glance only to sigh gloomily after a moment, resigning herself as she picked up her phone and sent a message to Shang Yue. Thinking about it, both the Yuan Family and Shang Family likely already knew what this was all about. On that day, they hadn’t taken any particular precautions, deliberately leaving things open to prepare for the future. Once everything was revealed, perhaps it would make things easier for ordinary people to accept.
When Shang Yue received the message, she read it over three times to make sure she hadn’t misread it-her close friend turned out to be the daughter of the Yuan Family’s eldest son, and not just any daughter, but the only one. Forgive her, but the first thought that popped into her mind wasn’t about the tangled connections with Yuan Yan, but rather-“Oh my god, how much inheritance do you stand to get?!”
Su Yang: …? She really should’ve known this friend was a bit dense.
It took a while for Shang Yue to process what Su Yang was actually trying to share with her. Hastily, she replied, “What I think doesn’t matter at all. After all, the Yuan Family people are your family. Besides, I don’t blame the people from the Shang Family anymore. I’m too tired to bother with them. A life for a life-Shang Quan saved mine, so in a way, I’ve already repaid them. I owe them nothing.”
Su Yang felt a sense of relief and responded, “I’ll avenge you.” Naturally, the “avenge you” she referred to was about finding ways to give Shang Xuan a hard time.
Shang Yue eagerly rubbed her hands together. “Oh, we definitely need revenge-help me make his life miserable!”
Back in the past, Su Yang’s previous status hadn’t allowed her to engage in petty retaliation against Shang Xuan. It would’ve been unbefitting. But now, given her identity as Shang Xuan’s nominal younger sister, there wasn’t really anything wrong with a little sibling mischief, was there?
Having made her decision, Su Yang felt much lighter. All her earlier doubts and internal conflicts seemed to fade away. She sent a message back to the Yuan Family, agreeing to visit and stating she had some things she wanted to tell them.
For over two decades, there had been no news of Yuan Junyuan. Yuan Junming and Yuan Yan had even refused to erect a tombstone for him, as they firmly believed he hadn’t died. Yet, the truth remained that the deceased was gone, leaving the living without even a place to mourn-a grief left with nowhere to rest.
Naturally, Yuan Junming and Yuan Yan were thrilled by the news. Upon hearing back from Su Yang, they immediately shared it with their children. Yuan Ying and Yuan Qun, who had heard not even a whisper of this beforehand, were left dumbfounded, their expressions bordering on surreal disbelief. Yuan Qun, in particular-who had once confessed his feelings to Su Yang-was completely shocked and wished desperately for a do-over of his life.
“I don’t care what you’re thinking,” Yuan Junming sternly addressed them. “From now on, Lin Zhaonuan is your sister. She might not want to change her name back, but whatever decision she makes, her wishes come first. Even if she doesn’t need our protection anymore, you are not to let her suffer any grievances!”
Yuan Junming’s tone was serious, but both Yuan Ying and Yuan Qun were thinking the exact same thing: They’d seen how capable Su Yang was with their own eyes, and now she even had Chu Chenxiao backing her. How could she possibly need their protection? Still, when Yuan Junming shot them a sharp look, the two of them quickly nodded obediently, holding their tongues.
Meanwhile, things were much more chaotic on Yuan Yan’s side.
Shang Quan was utterly stunned. It was bad enough that Lin Zhaonuan had married Chu Chenxiao, which already had him walking on eggshells. Now she turned out to be the Yuan Family’s eldest son’s daughter?! What kind of cursed fate was this?!
Shang Man and Shang Xuan, on the other hand, had mentally prepared themselves beforehand. They weren’t too shocked and instead sighed at the twists and turns of life. Shang Huan and Shang Quan immediately worried about the partnership between their family and the Yuan Family. They could only hope Lin Zhaonuan would show them some mercy.
Shang Huan and Shang Quan were, at their core, purely profit-driven individuals. It didn’t even occur to them that if Su Yang had wanted to act against them, she could’ve done so long ago using Stuart’s resources. Why would she have waited until now?
Shang Ye, still abroad pursuing his career in the arts, barely reacted to the news. It caused less of a ripple for him than hearing about the death of some obscure artist in his field.
“We won’t talk about Shang Yue’s situation for now, but from now on, Lin Zhaonuan is your sister. And, Manman, Lin Zhaonuan is officially your older sister now.” Yuan Yan spoke with a note of finality before glancing at her children. “I’m not asking you all to be best friends, but I am asking you to behave yourselves and avoid stirring up trouble.”
“Mom-” Shang Man whined, stretching the word out as he pouted. “I’ve been so well-behaved lately…”
“Alright, alright, I know you’re the golden child. Stop being dramatic and talk properly.” Yuan Yan sighed. None of her children truly understood just what her brother Yuan Junyuan had meant to her.
The Yuan Family originally planned to throw a grand banquet to celebrate Su Yang’s return to the family. However, Su Yang politely declined, so they settled for a simple family dinner instead.
The dinner guests included Su Yang, Chen Zhao, and Feng Bei from her side; Yuan Junming, Yuan Ying, and Yuan Qun from the Yuan Family; and then the Shang Family contingent: Shang Quan, Yuan Yan, Shang Huan (the eldest son), Shang Xuan (the second son), Shang Ye (the youngest son), and the youngest daughter, Manman.
It was everyone’s first time meeting Feng Bei, and their surprise was palpable. After a brief introduction, Su Yang wasted no time getting to the point.
“I have two main things I’d like to share with you today,” she began.
“The first is about my father. My father passed away before I was born, and I’d rather not go into too many details. Before he died, though, my mother and I were entrusted to Zhou Yun of the Zhou Family. Zhou Yun and my father were classmates, and my father trusted him because of his reliability.
“However, due to internal power struggles within the Zhou Family, Zhou Yun passed away under suspicious circumstances before he could tell the truth to others. My mother and I were consequently expelled from the Zhou Family. After my mother passed, I was taken in and raised by my master.”
She paused briefly before continuing. “The second matter, which I believe my cousin Yuan Ying might already suspect, is… I’m a ghost hunter.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Shang Xuan’s gaze locked onto her, intense and full of something he himself might not even have noticed-hope.
“Shang Yue… Shang Yue is still here, isn’t she?!” His voice trembled as he spoke, his eyes desperate for confirmation.
Su Yang met his gaze, remaining quiet for a moment before finally nodding. The truth was already laid bare, and there was no point in concealing it any longer. She had already discussed this with Shang Yue beforehand.
The joy on Shang Xuan’s face was unmistakable. Everyone else, however, looked utterly horrified. A person who had already died somehow still existing in this world… Didn’t that mean… Didn’t that make her a ghost?
Even Yuan Ying, who had once experienced an unnervingly close encounter with a ghost, couldn’t help but feel a tingle of fear crawling down his spine. His expression as he looked at his newly found younger sister carried an unplaceable unease.
“C-can I see her?” Shang Xuan hesitantly asked after a long pause, his voice wavering.
