Strawberry Almond Cookie - Chapter 1
At first, I thought I’d misheard.
But I’d been sensitive to voices ever since I was little. Xu Jingze had a distinctive voice, with a habitual upward lilt at the ends of his sentences.
Yu Jing hung up and explained, “The flowers are from my fiancé.”
For a moment, the room went quiet.
She’d spent more than three years chasing the best-looking guy in the neighboring school, ever since freshman year. Where had this fiancé suddenly come from?
Yu Jing shrugged.
“Our families arranged it. He’s handsome, and he’s a good guy. But we both think it’d be a waste to go through life having tried only one person. So we agreed we could each have our fun until we got married.”
She pulled a rose from the bouquet, her tone casual.
“He got a girlfriend this year. He promised that whatever he bought her, he’d get me the same thing at a hundred times the price.”
There was still a price tag attached to the lower right corner of the bouquet. It hadn’t been torn off properly.
Nine thousand nine hundred yuan.
Yu Jing flicked it and gave a derisive little laugh.
“Tsk. Ninety-nine yuan. That’s all he spent on her flowers. What an idiot. She’s putting up with a rich boy pretending to be poor, suffering along with him, and thinking she’s found true love.”
There was no sympathy in her voice, only delight at someone else’s expense.
Then her gaze fell on the flowers in my arms.
“Sang Yu, you got flowers too? Yours don’t look very fresh. How much were they?”
No more, no less.
Exactly ninety-nine yuan.
