Chapter 2
Miss Little Yuan.
Chen Yabai called me that from the very beginning. He transferred to our school in the second year of high school and instantly became a campus celebrity. During the English placement test at the start of the semester, he sat right behind me.
He had a pair of long, narrow peach-blossom eyes, propping his chin on his hand with a bright smile as he called me, “Miss Little Yuan.”
The exam roster was in pinyin, and the pinyin of my name is linyuan; the last two characters are Yu’an. He glanced at it and assumed it was pronounced “Yuan.”
Chen Yabai had long legs; with just a stretch, he could hook the leg of my chair. When I turned around, his eyelashes and tousled hair sparkled in the golden light, his nose high and straight: “Help me out.”
I nodded and agreed.
When the results came out, I got thirty points in English, and he was a bit higher – thirty-eight. I guess his essay was a little better than mine.
After class placement, the two of us unfortunately ended up in the same bottom-ranked class because of our poor grades.
When he walked toward me, I thought I was about to get beaten up by this school bully. But he stopped in front of me, ruffled my hair, and clicked his tongue: “Miss Little Yuan, your English isn’t very good. How about I tutor you?”
Thirty-eight tutoring thirty – he was confident enough.
Annoyed, I turned my head away.
Actually, my grades weren’t that bad, but my parents had been in the middle of a long, drawn-out divorce. I purposely did poorly to get their attention, but unfortunately, I failed.
Instead, I accidentally made Chen Yabai hold a grudge against me.
After that, Chen Yabai bothered me for quite a while, calling me “Miss Little Yuan, Miss Little Yuan” for a whole year.
So much so that when no one called me Miss Little Yuan anymore, I actually felt a bit out of place.
