Spellbound Hearts - Chapter 104 - Unexpected Surprise
Seeing the notification on her phone screen, Ji Xuan instinctively swiped her finger across the screen to open it.
Just as she opened it, she remembered something and pressed exit.
Forget it, it has nothing to do with her.
Exiting the notification about Song Zhaoli’s engagement, Ji Xuan used her connections to investigate Yu Hui’s female secretary.
The investigation revealed that the woman was named Ke Yun, thirty-two years old, unmarried, and had a child.
After finding out her current address, Ji Xuan took a taxi to the residential area where she lived.
She thought someone like her would surely live in some luxurious high-end neighborhood, but upon arrival, she discovered it was just an ordinary apartment building.
Moreover, it was the old-fashioned kind, without even a security guard.
Ji Xuan got out of the car and, upon entering the community, saw two elderly men playing chess and enjoying the cool air in a small pavilion.
Ji Xuan walked up in her high heels, initially standing aside to watch for a while. After the two elders finished a game, she politely inquired with a smile, “Hello, do you know Ke Yun?”
One of the elderly men looked up at her and shook his head, saying, “I don’t know her.”
Ji Xuan nodded, not expecting to be lucky enough to get an immediate answer.
She said ‘sorry to bother you’ to the two elders and was about to leave when the other elder, who hadn’t spoken, suddenly said, “Ke Yun? Is she the girl from the Ke family? She used to work in Qing City.”
Ji Xuan stopped upon hearing this and turned to respond with a smile, “Yes, do you know her?”
The elder said, “Yes, we live across the hall from each other.”
After speaking, the elder looked at Ji Xuan and asked, “Are you her friend?”
Ji Xuan didn’t dare to tell the truth and nodded, “Yes, I’m a friend.”
The elder noticed Ji Xuan’s non-local accent and asked, “Are you from Qing City?”
Ji Xuan confirmed, “Yes, you noticed.”
The elder chuckled, “Your accent is similar to a man who often visits her. That man is from Qing City, seems to be Ke Yun’s former boss.”
After saying a few words, the elder seemed to realize he had said too much and changed the topic, “She’s not home now; her child is sick, and she’s staying at the maternal and child health hospital.”
Ji Xuan understood and thanked him again, “Thank you.”
The elder replied, “You’re welcome.”
After the elder’s words, Ji Xuan smiled at him and left.
As she turned away, the elder lowered his voice and said, “You don’t know Ke Yun from the Ke family? She’s the only girl from our courtyard who got into graduate school. Such a good girl, having a child without getting married. Fortunately, Ke Yun’s father passed away, otherwise…”
The elder who revealed Ke Yun’s information sighed with the other elder.
The other elder responded with emotion, “Young girls these days, really, it’s hard to say…”
Ji Xuan listened, her eyebrows furrowing slightly, but she didn’t turn back.
Half an hour later, Ji Xuan took a taxi and arrived at the maternal and child health hospital. After some inquiries, she found out which ward Ke Yun was in.
Ji Xuan didn’t immediately enter the ward but went to the supermarket at the entrance to buy a box of milk and some fruit.
After buying the items, Ji Xuan returned to the hospital and knocked on the door of Ke Yun’s ward.
After knocking twice, there was no response from inside, but a deliberately lowered argument could be heard.
“I told you to stay with the child in Qing City, but you didn’t listen and insisted on coming back to Changsha.”
“You should consider the child, if not yourself.”
“Look at you now, struggling alone without anyone to help.”
Through the door, Yu Hui’s deep voice carried a hint of anger.
After a while, a female voice sounded inside, “President Yu, I’ve already caused you a lot of trouble, I can’t trouble you anymore.”
Yu Hui said, “What do you mean by causing me trouble? We’ve worked together for so many years, don’t we have even this bit of friendship? Besides, I have a responsibility for this child too.”
The two inside continued to argue, and Ji Xuan didn’t feel comfortable barging in, so she turned and sat on a bench in the hospital corridor, planning to wait until they stopped arguing before entering.
Unexpectedly, as soon as she sat down, she saw a familiar figure hunched over, pushing a cart of used bed sheets and covers that needed washing, passing by her.
Ji Xuan froze for a moment and suddenly stood up.
The person walked with their head down, not noticing her at all, occasionally speaking a few words to the middle-aged woman beside them.
“I can handle it myself, you take a rest.”
“What do you want for lunch? I’ll go buy groceries and cook for you at home later.”
