Reborn in the 80s: Divorced and Spoiled by the Military Man - Chapter 151
Chapter 151: Did He Seriously Learn to Bark Like a Dog?
Xie Yunshu was not exactly known for having a saintly temper either. She had already spent ages explaining, yet he still refused to let it go. If he was going to cut ties over one serving of chicken, then maybe this friendship was better off gone.
She gave a cold snort too, lowered her head, and went back to her book. Now, not using your brain for studying-that was what really counted as being sick!
Ji Siyuan waited and waited, all the way until the second class began, but Xie Yunshu still did not say another word to him. Unwilling to accept it, he tilted his head slightly and glanced over from the corner of his eye, only to find that she was listening to class with complete focus. She had not taken it to heart at all!
He was so angry his stomach felt stuffed with it. Since he could not absorb a word the teacher was saying anyway, he simply started doodling all over his paper. After drawing for ages, the person under his pen was still Xie Yunshu-only this time, he did not add the red beauty mark beneath the corner of her eye.
After school, Xie Yunshu packed up her books on her own and left.
Ji Siyuan finally could not hold it in anymore. He strode after her from behind. “Xie Yunshu, don’t you think you’re going too far? You’re the one who wronged me first. You talked for ages, then scolded me, and now you’re ignoring me too?”
He had been spoiled since he was little. After what happened to Xinxin, his family had made up for that guilt by pouring it all onto him. It could be said that from childhood to now, he had never suffered even the slightest grievance.
So now, as the young master spoke, even he felt like he had been wronged to death.
Xie Yunshu snorted. “Aren’t you the one who wanted to cut ties with me? If you’ve got the guts, don’t talk. Whoever speaks first is a dog!”
Her ponytail swept an arc through the air as she got on her bicycle and left without hesitation. Ji Siyuan, on the other hand, was left staring after her in a daze. When he said he wanted to cut ties, he had meant for her to apologize to him. He had not actually wanted to cut ties!
Xie Yunshu had no time to guess what this young master’s thoughts were. Tomorrow, the canteen would officially open for business, and they would start selling breakfast in the morning. She needed to go find Auntie Zhao and confirm the last few details again. Although not many people would come to eat in the morning, things still could not be allowed to fall into chaos.
Auntie Zhao was not asleep at this hour either. She was waiting at Xie Yunshu’s home, and as soon as she saw her return, she immediately stood up and said, “I’ve already talked it over with the two of them. Tomorrow, we’ll be at the Construction Site canteen at five. We don’t need too many varieties either. We’ll just make big stuffed buns and stuffed pancakes, millet porridge, and boiled eggs. With three people working, it’ll go fast!”
After spending so many days working with Auntie Zhao, Xie Yunshu trusted her a great deal. “I asked around. Not many people come to eat in the morning or evening, so there’s no need to make that much. Most people will be concentrated at lunch. Once you’re done with the noon rush, go home and rest. In the evening, just let the others handle it.”
Auntie Zhao knew she was worried she would get tired, so she smiled and waved it off. “Yunshu, don’t underestimate your Auntie Zhao. How much work is this, really?”
Compared to earning work points in the countryside back then, this was far easier. Those days were what you called bitter. There was endless work every day and never enough food to fill your stomach. Now the children could eat their fill and even have meat, and all three girls could go to school. She felt life had so much to look forward to!
The next day, Xie Yunshu got up early. When she arrived at the Construction Site, the sky was still so dark she could barely see the road, but the back kitchen of the canteen was already brightly lit.
The people who came to the canteen for breakfast were usually those living at the Construction Site. Around six, when the sky had just begun to brighten, people started walking over one after another. Perhaps it was because this was the first day breakfast was being served, and in a new place at that.
The workers were all quite curious, and there were a few more people coming to eat than Xie Yunshu had expected. But buns and stuffed pancakes were much simpler than serving dishes at lunch. Whatever someone wanted, the staff only had to pick it up with tongs and hand it over. As for taking payment, Xie Yunshu was still handling that today.
Around seven o’clock, Shen Subai appeared wearing a light gray overcoat. The scarf was still wrapped around his neck, and at first glance, it actually matched quite well.
Xie Yunshu found it a little strange. “Captain Shen, you come here for breakfast too?”
People who did not live at the Construction Site would not come over this early to eat. Most would eat at home, or at the very least go to a breakfast shop for soup dumplings.
Shen Subai glanced at the people eating and the surrounding environment. Everything was orderly, clean, and hygienic. Although there were not many varieties of food, for the workers, it was much more convenient than running outside early in the morning to buy something, or lighting a stove to cook for themselves.
Only then did he turn his attention to Xie Yunshu. “I probably won’t have time at noon, so I came by early this morning to take a look.”
Xie Yunshu was a little impressed. “Captain Shen, you take your work way too seriously.”
Shen Subai frowned. “There are three meals a day. Are you planning to stand watch over every single one?”
Even if dinner went quickly, she would still be busy until seven or eight at night. How was she supposed to attend night school then? Her energy wouldn’t keep up either. Could she really handle being this busy from morning to night?
Xie Yunshu had already thought this through. “I’ll have my mom collect the money in the evenings. It won’t delay my classes.”
Shen Subai’s gaze swept over her face. She wore no makeup, and her hair was neatly pinned up. Even though she had gotten up early, there was no sign of fatigue on her face. Only then did he relax. “There aren’t many people eating breakfast. Since you’re the boss now, you need to learn to hand off the work in your hands.”
Xie Yunshu was rather helpless. “I wouldn’t dare hand the money-collecting over to an outsider just like that. My mom already collects money at noon and at night. I can’t make her get up this early too, can I? Anyway, I’m used to waking up early. I’ll just treat it like coming to work.”
Most of the payments were only ten or twenty cents. If she let someone else collect the money, and they quietly pocketed a few dimes every day, how would she ever know? Selling meals wasn’t like selling clothes or shoes, where there was a set quantity and the accounts could be matched.
Shen Subai ordered two stuffed pancakes and a serving of millet porridge. Before leaving, he said, “I’ll think of a way.”
Xie Yunshu blinked. Was Captain Shen going to introduce her to someone who could collect money? But to be honest, even if Captain Shen recommended them, she still wouldn’t dare hand over a job that dealt directly with cash to someone else…
Breakfast was only busy for a little over an hour. By around seven-thirty, there were basically no customers left.
Just then, Ji Siyuan came running in from outside the canteen, panting. When he saw Xie Yunshu was still there, he let out a sigh of relief. “I thought you’d already left!”
Xie Yunshu had already started clearing the trays. She gave Ji Siyuan a sidelong glance and said nothing.
Seeing her expression, Ji Siyuan’s handsome face darkened. “Xie Yunshu, you’re way too good at holding grudges. I just said it casually. You actually took it seriously?”
Xie Yunshu replied unhurriedly, “I just don’t want to be a dog.”
That rotten temper of hers was actually worse than his!
Ji Siyuan glanced around and saw there weren’t many people nearby. His face flushed red as he lowered his voice and let out an extremely quiet, “Woof.” Then he said, “Yesterday was my fault, all right?”
Now Xie Yunshu couldn’t stay angry anymore. Ji Siyuan’s bark had left her stunned. He had actually imitated a dog?
Ji Siyuan looked at her pitifully. “Don’t be heartless. I’ve already done this much, and you’re still mad?”
Xie Yunshu was the typical type who responded to gentleness, not force. Seeing him like this, her tone softened, and she explained, “I’ll make potato chicken stew for you at noon today. I went to buy the chicken yesterday afternoon. It was only delayed by one day. I never said I wouldn’t make it.”
She had promised Ji Siyuan. Although she had forgotten at the time, she had remembered right away that afternoon…
Ji Siyuan’s temper came quickly and left just as quickly. He happily picked up two meat buns and lifted his chin with a proud little huff. “At least you know what’s good for you!”
It was as if this young master had come here just to bark once. Then he turned and left. Xie Yunshu couldn’t help rubbing her eyes, feeling as if there really was a dog tail wagging behind him…
Before ten o’clock, Li Fenlan, Song Shanchuan and his mother, as well as the aunties helping serve the food, had all arrived. Only now did the canteen truly count as having taken its first step toward official operation. They had heard that leaders would be coming too, so absolutely nothing could go wrong!
Xie Yunshu braced herself and ran back and forth between the kitchen and the front, afraid that any problem might occur.
They started serving lunch at eleven-thirty, and until twelve-thirty, no major problems arose.
Xie Yunshu let out a sigh of relief. She was just about to sit down and rest her legs when she saw the young security guard from the Construction Site jog in. “Boss Xie, there’s someone outside insisting on coming in. They say they’re your family.”
