Chapter 2
After the child ran off, I immediately picked up my phone and called my childhood friend, Genevieve.
I have no idea what I’ve been through in the past ten years, but my phone is pitifully devoid of information.
Old friends have vanished without a trace from my contacts.
The phone rang several times before Genevieve finally answered.
“What do you want?”
Her voice was a coldness I had never heard before.
I scratched my face, her aloofness leaving me at a loss for words.
Seeing my silence, Genevieve on the other end grew anxious instead.
“Annabelle, say something. Didn’t you say you’d never contact me again?”
Goodness, what on earth did I do in these ten years?
I thought for a moment and said, “Genny, I know you’re aloof, but don’t be aloof right now. I just want to ask you, who is my husband?”
This was my most pressing concern at the moment.
Genevieve was silent for a moment, “Annabelle, did you forget to take your meds today?”
Huh? Ten years later, Genevieve has learned to insult people in a roundabout way.
“I’m damn serious! Did you forget to take your meds? Never mind, just wait at home, I’m in line for a COVID test, I’ll come find you later!”
Genevieve’s tone was quite serious. Could it be that I haven’t time-traveled, but am actually ill?
And what is this COVID test? You have to line up for it?
