My Ex-Boyfriend Fell for My Sister - Chapter 12
Two days later, Alex came back.
He came straight to my house.
It was the weekend. I was sprawled messily in bed scrolling through Twitter. My younger sister called out from the living room, “Alex is here.”
A moment later, there was a gentle knock at the door: “Emily, can I come in?”
My younger sister betrayed me without mercy: “Go ahead, she’s been up for a while, just playing on her phone.”
She even helped him open the door.
I immediately buried my head under the covers. I didn’t want him to see how my hair hadn’t been washed in two days.
The bed dipped at the edge. Through the blanket, he patted my head, his voice full of laughter: “What’s wrong?”
I muffled, “Nothing…”
“Don’t want to see me?” he said. “I just came to find you as soon as I got back.”
“It’s not that…” I tried to negotiate, “How about you wait outside for a bit…”
Suddenly, light flooded in-the blanket was lifted. And then, darkness again.
He had crawled in.
We were so close we could hear each other’s breathing. My heart skipped a beat.
“What are you doing?” I grumbled.
“Kissing you,” he said.
Alex really did kiss me.
Wet and soft, an overwhelmingly sweet kiss.
Maybe there wasn’t enough oxygen under the covers-I felt dizzy and hot. “Don’t… I can’t handle it all at once.”
Alex laughed, then tilted his head and kissed me again.
By the end, we were both so hot we couldn’t stand it. Alex tried to undo the buttons on my pajamas, but I smacked his hand away.
He took a deep breath, wrapped me up tightly, and muttered, “You’re not my wife yet, can’t touch…”
I really wanted to punch him.
Later, Alex and I revisited the old places, but our moods had changed.
Blue sky, white clouds, flowing water, crowds of people-somehow the gloom in my heart was blown away, and everything took on new meaning because of the person beside me.
I knew that the whole way, Jake had been following us.
That night, in a heavy rainstorm, we found a small inn with a courtyard. We only booked one room.
After my shower, Alex came out wrapped in a towel. Before I could even appreciate the view, there was a sudden urgent knocking at the door outside.
Alex and I exchanged a glance. He walked over to open the door.
Outside stood Jake, drenched from head to toe, looking utterly miserable.
The rain was still coming down in thin sheets.
His face was pale. He tried to come in and grab my hand: “Emily…”
Alex raised his arm to block him.
I said, “Jake, do you want me to call the police?”
He froze, staring at me blankly, his eyes red.
The next morning, when we left, we found him crouched by the door. He hadn’t left all night.
Hearing us, Jake slowly stood up. The man I once loved so deeply was now gaunt, his eyes bloodshot.
I remembered how I’d felt that night. Maybe it was just like this.
Alex took my hand and pulled me behind him.
“We’re engaged,” he said. “From now on, stay away from my wife.”
Jake’s hand at his side trembled slightly. I noticed, even if I didn’t say anything.
But from that moment on, his pain and humiliation had nothing to do with me.
After all, there’s a difference between close and distant.
