Chapter 44
As soon as Gu Feiyin saw the dark shadow, she realized it was indeed a Water Ghost causing trouble by seeking a substitute for death.
Water Ghosts are usually malevolent ghosts formed from those who have died wronged or drowned. Unable to reincarnate, they linger in the water. Extremely powerful within their domain, they move with unmatched speed and are nearly invincible in water. However, they are bound to it. To break free, they must either find a substitute every three years or perform good deeds to attain redemption and thus leave the water.
The Water Ghost in the river was definitely breaking the rules, trying to drag someone into the water to become a substitute before they even entered it.
Meanwhile, Old Man Wang had already sunk into the water. Old Zhao was frantically pacing back and forth, calling out without getting any response. He hurried to get help, panting as he ran with his old arms and legs, gasping, “It’s bad, really bad! Someone has fallen into the water! Come quick, save him! Old Man Wang is drowning!”
Old Man Wang couldn’t hear the commotion on the shore anymore. After feeling something pulling his grandson downward, he instinctively knew this was bad. He had heard of Water Ghosts using substitutes but had never encountered one until now.
He clutched his grandson, afraid to let go in case he never found him again. He dove deeper, his eyes wide, only to see a dark shadow almost entwining around his grandson, appearing very sinister.
He focused his gaze and saw that the shadow was human-shaped, more like a long mass of hair entangling his grandson, and he vaguely saw a pair of malicious, cold eyes staring at him.
Old Man Wang was terrified; he had truly encountered a Water Ghost!
At this moment, his grandson was motionless, likely having swallowed water and passed out. In desperation, Old Man Wang exerted more strength, pulling his grandson upward. Time was of the essence, as any delay would mean his grandson’s certain death by drowning.
But Old Man Wang, already over sixty, lacked the youthful strength he once had. Moreover, being in the cold river water after just jumping in without his down jacket, he was shivering with cold, his body growing weaker and sinking deeper and deeper into despair…
What to do? Were he and his grandson destined to die here?
That couldn’t happen. He might be old, but his grandson was still just a child, not yet grown up to become a scientist. How could he die so obscurely here?
Old Man Wang summoned all his strength, resolved to save his grandson at the cost of his own life if necessary.
Just as Old Man Wang was in utter despair, he suddenly felt a force pulling at his feet. It must be Old Zhao calling for help, he thought, as Zhao himself couldn’t swim. Renewed hope filled him, and he gripped his grandson’s feet, struggling to swim upward.
The force on his legs was strong, and he felt their bodies slowly rising. This was the hope of life, and he almost cried with relief. “Thank you, whoever you are up there!”
However, the force behind him was also strong, pulling them back down like a tug of war.
Old Man Wang cursed for not bringing his peachwood sword; he would have stabbed that damned Water Ghost!
The Headless Ghost holding his ankles was panting heavily, shouting, “It’s not working, this Water Ghost is too strong!”
The Armless Ghost, holding the legs of the Headless Ghost, found the effort surprisingly heavy: “Water Ghosts are naturally strong, and we’re in their element. How could we possibly match their strength?”
Neighbor Miss floated over, grabbing the Armless Ghost’s legs, her face grave with the strain.
Old Grandma was behind Neighbor Miss, gripping her legs, her face even grimmer, showing a rare hint of color.
Four ghosts and two humans were entangled in this struggle in the water, like monkeys fishing for the moon.
The Water Ghost, furious, desperately tried to drag the little boy deeper into the water. “It’s my divine right to find a substitute! I’ve waited over twenty years, I can’t wait any longer!”
But soon, Old Man Wang felt his legs breaking the water surface, his body gradually rising. He was so excited that he nearly sobbed until his entire head was above water, and he realized he was actually hanging in mid-air, right in the middle of the river…?
It seemed they had been pulled to the middle of the river in just a moment.
But why was he hanging upside down? He blinked and looked up, shocked to see a Headless Ghost holding his ankles!
Old Man Wang: ……………………
Quickly, his grandson was also pulled from the river, only his hands still submerged. The dark shadow was just beneath a thin layer of water. He saw the Water Ghost with long, green hair like seaweed, its face pale from the water, red eyes glaring at him, still holding onto his grandson’s hands.
The Red-Dressed Ghost floated in mid-air, her whip lashing out at the Water Ghost, shouting, “You target a child? Have you no shame?”
The Red-Dressed Ghost had lost a child herself. Although the father was worthless, she had genuinely looked forward to the birth. Seeing the Water Ghost targeting a small child for a substitute enraged her enough to want to beat him.
Her whip struck the water, causing splashes to hit Old Man Wang’s face, snapping him back to reality. He was shocked to realize that they might actually be saved by ghosts.
But they were not yet out of danger. The Water Ghost wouldn’t let go, and the ghosts tugging at his legs were pulling him and his grandson toward the shore. He felt himself and his grandson slowly moving toward the bank until they actually reached it, his lower body still in the water, his grandson still gripped by the Water Ghost, whose eyes looked even more ferocious than before!
Old Man Wang was terrified, holding his grandson tightly, pleading, “Please, I beg you, don’t take my grandson. He’s too young to die! Take me instead, I’ll die for him!”
The Red-Dressed Ghost retorted, “No one will die today!”
Water Ghost, head above water but still holding the boy, said fiercely, “You’re interfering too much. This is my substitute, caught fair and square. Why are you helping these foolish humans?”
The Red-Dressed Ghost snapped back, “There are plenty of bad people who come to this river. Why don’t you catch them instead of targeting a small child? Admit it, you’re a bully!”
With that, she struck several more lashes at the Water Ghost. But as a relatively new ghost, she was no match for the decades-old Water Ghost. Her whips were quickly dispersed, and she screamed and charged at him.
Old Man Wang watched, horrified. The Water Ghost seemed too powerful; the many ghosts on shore couldn’t subdue him, and one Red-Dressed Ghost certainly couldn’t.
But as he hung there, helplessly half in the water, his unconscious grandson beside him, he wondered what to do.
Just then, he saw a fishing rod extend towards the Water Ghost, poking at him unsteadily…
He turned and saw a young woman on the shore, dressed in a black cotton jacket and pants, with Long Black Straight Hair covering her face, making her look quite somber, possibly another ghost.
Old Man Wang was silent for a moment. The Red-Dressed Ghost’s whip had been ineffective; could a mere fishing rod work?
He felt even more despair, but just when all seemed lost, the fishing rod suddenly pierced through the Water Ghost’s forehead. The Water Ghost screamed in pain, his grip loosening. The ghosts seized the moment, pulling Old Man Wang and his grandson to shore. The Water Ghost, still not giving up, was dragged along.
The Water Ghost was nearly mad, screaming and threatening revenge once he found a substitute and was freed from his bonds.
Before he could finish, the fishing rod struck again, hitting him repeatedly, leaving deep marks. Weakened, he finally let go of the boy, who fell to the ground, followed by Old Man Wang, who immediately began CPR on his grandson, desperate to revive him.
Though the ordeal seemed to last an eternity, they had only been in the water for a few minutes. Timely rescue could still save the boy.
Sure enough, after several rounds of CPR and breaths, the boy coughed up water and began to breathe, although still groggy. He blinked, seeing a strange person with long hair in the river, surrounded by others-one without a head, another without arms, and an old lady with a broom, among several young women…
He couldn’t quite understand what he was seeing, as if he were watching a fantastical movie.
Old Man Wang, holding his grandson, cried tears of relief, grateful for the awakening.
The ghosts collectively sighed in relief.
Wiping his tears, Old Man Wang knelt and said earnestly, “Thank you, thank you all! I’m so grateful. If not for your help, my grandson and I would have been in grave danger today, likely dead at the hands of that Water Ghost!”
The Headless Ghost and the others were surprised; they hadn’t expected the old man to see them. They waved off his thanks, saying it was nothing, that the Water Ghost had gone too far in targeting such a young child.
“That’s right, it was that sinister Water Ghost, not sparing even a child.”
“They used to say how powerful that Water Ghost was, how strong he was, but it seems he was not so tough after all.”
“No need to thank us, just take your child home. Don’t let him catch a cold in this freezing weather!”
Old Man Wang turned to the Long-haired Woman and expressed his gratitude. He knew that if she hadn’t struck the Water Ghost’s forehead, his grandson might still be in the clutches of that ghost, with an uncertain fate.
He glanced at the Long-haired Woman, noting her eerie and cold demeanor, even more so than the Water Ghost. Despite her frightening appearance, she was indeed a benevolent spirit who had saved him and his grandson. It was a reminder that appearances can be deceiving.
“Thank you so much. From now on, I’ll make offerings to you on the first and fifteenth of every month and during festivals, to show my gratitude for saving my grandson,” Old Man Wang said, shaking his dazed grandson in his arms. “Come on, say thank you to the uncles, aunties, and the granny who saved you.”
The little boy blinked, opened his mouth to say thank you, and squinted at the Long-haired Woman standing against the light, offering a faint smile.
The Red-Dressed Ghost chimed in, “Enough with the thanks, let’s not waste time. Hurry and take the child home before he catches a cold.”
Gu Feiyin nodded in agreement, “No need for thanks. Just get going. By the way, can I have this fishing rod?”
Old Man Wang nodded repeatedly, “Of course, it’s yours! Thank you!”
Tears welled up in his eyes again. He had always thought ghosts were frightening, and they were, but there were kind-hearted ghosts too, and they were so polite. He was truly grateful.
He staggered a few steps, clutching his grandson as he headed home. Being old and frail, he nearly stumbled, but the Headless Ghost and Armless Ghost helped him along for a few steps. They didn’t go far, as Old Man Wang’s son had heard about his father and son falling into the river and rushed over, relieved to find them safe and sound, almost crying with joy.
He had feared he was too late. The riverbank was sparsely populated, and Old Zhao had run and shouted for help. It took nearly ten minutes for him to arrive, a time that could be life-threatening. He truly thought he was too late!
Seeing his father and son unharmed, he was overwhelmed with emotion, taking his son in his arms, “It’s good that you’re okay. Let’s hurry to the hospital!”
Old Zhao and Old Man Wang’s wife quickly supported him, asking if he was alright.
Old Man Wang replied, “I’m fine, just a bit cold.”
He turned back to thank the Headless Ghost and Armless Ghost again, “We’re heading to the hospital now. I’ll come by the river to see you another day.”
The Headless Ghost and Armless Ghost waved him off, saying there was no need. They didn’t live by the river; they were just there by chance.
Old Man Wang asked, “Why not?”
The Headless Ghost explained, “We used to stay at the unfinished building, but it’s being rebuilt now. The owner hired a Taoist to exorcise the place, so we had to find refuge elsewhere.”
Old Man Wang: “…???”
He seemed to have stumbled upon some incredible truth. He wanted to ask more, but his wife pulled him away, saying, “What are you babbling about? Are you hallucinating from the cold? Let’s go home!”
Old Man Wang was led away, glancing back to find no trace of the Headless Ghost and Armless Ghost, as if everything he had experienced was just an illusion.
His grandson, perched on his father’s shoulder, waved goodbye. His father asked who he was saying goodbye to.
The little boy replied, “To the uncles, aunties, and the big sister who saved me and Grandpa.”
His father looked back, seeing the empty riverbank with no sign of uncles, aunties, or a big sister. He was puzzled but had no time to dwell on it, rushing to the hospital with his child.
Meanwhile, the Water Ghost was furious and shocked. These little ghosts were too dismissive of him. If it weren’t for that fishing rod piercing him, would he have let go? In his rage, he turned to see that the one who struck him was a mere Long-haired Woman?! A mere human, so formidable without even using spiritual artifacts?
The Long-haired Woman had a sinister look, her eyes filled with mischievous malice as she struck him with the fishing rod, sending chills down his spine. Having been a ghost for decades, he knew better than to provoke her. Without a word, he tried to dive into the water to escape! But the Red-Dressed Ghost wouldn’t allow it. She gathered her Resentment Energy into a long whip, wrapping it around the Water Ghost and pulling him back. The Water Ghost resisted, using all his strength to dive deeper, nearly dragging the Red-Dressed Ghost down with him.
Gu Feiyin stepped forward, taking the whip from the Red-Dressed Ghost, and with a strong pull, she dragged the Water Ghost out of the water!
He screamed, “Let go of me, let go!”
Gu Feiyin had no intention of releasing him. She dragged the Water Ghost to the shore, stepping on him with a foot that felt like a mountain pressing down, immobilizing him and unsettling his spirit.
Who was this Long-haired Woman?
After pinning the Water Ghost, Gu Feiyin returned the whip to the Red-Dressed Ghost. She searched around and picked up the fishing rod again, using the fishing line to tie up the Water Ghost.
Surprisingly, the fishing line was quite sturdy, wrapping around him several times, making it impossible for him to break free.
Water Ghost: “…???”
Bound tightly by the fishing line, the Water Ghost felt as if he were suppressed by some powerful spiritual artifact. He had been a Water Ghost for years, yet he couldn’t overcome a mere fishing line?
The Red-Dressed Ghost stood beside the Long-haired Woman, unfazed by her antics, “Why are you tying him up?”
Shouldn’t he be dealt with directly? The Long-haired Woman chuckled, her eyes gleaming, “Heh, this ghost can be sold for money.”
Water Ghost: “…!!!”
Red-Dressed Ghost: “…”
Neighbor Miss: “…”
Old Lady: “…”
The Red-Dressed Ghost shook her head in disbelief, “Sell him? For how much?”
Gu Feiyin pondered, considering the Water Ghost wasn’t as formidable as the Face Ghost, “Probably around fifteen yuan.”
The ghosts: “…………”
The Water Ghost exploded, “You ignorant human, foolish mortal, how dare you sell a ghost? Beware of divine retribution!”
Gu Feiyin scoffed. The heavens had already struck her with lightning before, and caused her so much trouble. Selling a ghost was nothing. Besides, she was earning money through her skills; why would she face divine retribution?
Gu Feiyin gave the Water Ghost a couple of kicks, making him howl in pain, then punched him a few times until he finally settled down. She then flicked the fishing rod and kicked him back into the water.
The Water Ghost thought the eerie Long-haired Woman was sparing him, but the Red-Dressed Ghost, Neighbor Miss, and Old Lady were puzzled. The Red-Dressed Ghost asked, “Are you letting him go?”
Gu Feiyin tugged on the fishing rod, equally puzzled, “Let him go? No, I’m making him catch some fish and shrimp for me.”
She licked her lips, recalling the delicious grilled fish, and couldn’t help but drool, “Grilled fish is really tasty.”
Water Ghost: “…?!”
The ghosts: “…………”
The Red-Dressed Ghost was stunned, watching the Water Ghost swim around in the river, unable to break free. For some reason, she felt a strange sympathy for him.
Even Neighbor Miss and Old Lady managed a rare sympathetic smile.
The Water Ghost never imagined he’d be tied to a fishing line, submerged in the river to catch fish for a mere human. His resentment was overwhelming, and he was on the verge of tears, yet he couldn’t overcome the Long-haired Woman, begrudgingly catching her a large carp.
Gu Feiyin didn’t know how to handle fish, so she said, “Now clean the fish, remove the scales and guts, but leave the fish bladder.”
Water Ghost: …
This cursed Long-haired Woman! But in his predicament, he had no choice but to comply.
He remained motionless, and Gu Feiyin said, “You deal with fish every day, surely you know how to clean them?”
The Water Ghost gritted his teeth, unable to resist, and reluctantly replied, “I do.”
Gu Feiyin instructed, “Then get to it.”
Grilling fish required some skill. There were plenty of scraps by the river to start a fire, but a makeshift setup might not yield the taste of a grilled fish shop. Moreover, she didn’t have many ingredients, so she went to a nearby shop to buy some salt, a bottle of spicy sauce, oil, and chili powder. She also spent a few yuan on garlic, ginger, and scallions, intending to try making grilled fish.
Fish was delicious, and with the right seasoning, it would taste good as long as it wasn’t burnt.
Thinking about it, she wasn’t in a hurry to sell the Water Ghost. After all, he was an expert at catching fish, and with him around, she could eat fish every day! If possible, she could even sell fish, another way to make money.
The Water Ghost felt a chill from head to toe, shivering in the water, regretting his actions today. He had caused trouble for nothing and ended up being caught himself. If he had known, he wouldn’t have grabbed that child!
Fish was tender, and grilling didn’t take long. She first coated the fish with salt, spicy sauce, garlic, and ginger, marinated it, and then grilled it until both sides were golden brown. She couldn’t resist taking a bite, dipping it in a sauce made of spicy sauce, garlic, and scallions. Although it wasn’t as good as the grilled fish from a shop, it was still quite tasty.
Soon, the fish was devoured, and she remembered the menu at the grilled fish shop had spicy crawfish. Once she retrieved the coffin, she’d have the Water Ghost catch crawfish for her. She hadn’t tried crawfish yet, but it must be delicious!
Night fell quickly. The Foreman and several burly men stood guard at the unfinished building. They didn’t dare go up, having heard that Daoist Li had performed a Ritual Ceremony. Originally, they planned to move the coffin out, but Daoist Li advised them to first suppress the evil within it, saying that after placing Talismans on it, they should wait three days before moving it.
Otherwise, if they acted rashly without suppressing the evil, it could bring disaster.
During these three days, they needed to keep a close watch on the coffin to prevent any accidents, as no one knew what might happen.
The Foreman and the boss were puzzled but trusted Daoist Li’s words. After all, the coffin had mysteriously appeared in the unfinished building, and no matter how they thought about it, it was a very eerie situation.
They set up two temporary cabins in front of the unfinished building. One was for Daoist Li and his two disciples to rest, and the other was for the Foreman and his five employees, with a large shared bed. The Foreman also had his men go to a nearby barbecue shop to buy several hundred yuan’ worth of barbecue and two cases of beer. They ate, drank, and played cards, alleviating the eerie feeling of the night.
By the time it was past eleven at night, the barbecue was finished, the beer was nearly gone, and even the money was almost all lost. The foreman, frustrated, threw down his cards. “You guys keep playing, I’m going to the restroom.”
Perhaps because he had lost so much, he didn’t find the unfinished building as terrifying as before. Smoking a cigarette, he headed to the public restroom outside the building, glancing at it along the way. Especially the fifth floor, which was pitch black, like a bottomless pit that could swallow a person whole.
He shivered and quickly looked away.
On his way back, he received a call from his boss. The boss, who seemed to have had a few drinks too, asked, “Everything okay over there?”
“All good. With Daoist Li here, even if something happens, he can handle it. Don’t worry, brother-in-law.”
“Alright, keep an eye on things. If Daoist Li can’t handle it, make him return that ten grand. And remember, don’t let anyone know about the ghost stories in the unfinished building. If word gets out, we’ll lose this deal.”
“Don’t worry, brother-in-law. I know what to do.”
Hanging up, the foreman whistled as he walked back. But then, he thought he saw a shadow fly into the building.
He looked carefully at the building, but it was silent and dark. Was it just his imagination?
Scratching his head, he suddenly felt a chill down his spine. Could he have seen a ghost? Impossible, with Daoist Li’s ghost-repelling formations and talismans on the coffin, how could a ghost get in?
Panicking, he rushed to Daoist Li. “Something’s wrong, Daoist Li! I think I saw a shadow heading to the room with the coffin. What should we do?!”
Daoist Li, who was happily counting on the ten grand he was about to earn, was startled by the foreman’s panic. He stood up, coughed to compose himself, and led his two disciples out. “What’s going on? Don’t panic.”
The foreman, seeing Daoist Li’s calm demeanor, felt somewhat reassured. “I saw a shadow on the fifth floor. Do you think it could be… a ghost?”
Daoist Li replied, “I’ve performed rituals here. Even if there were ghosts, they couldn’t get in. You must have been mistaken.”
The foreman thought hard. “No, I really think I saw something…”
To prove his point, he led Daoist Li and the others outside the building, pointing to where he saw the shadow. “Right there, I saw it with my own eyes, Daoist Li. You should go check it out, ghost or not.”
Daoist Li took out his compass, and sure enough, the needle was spinning towards the building. His heart skipped a beat. Could there really be a ghost? But he was terrified of ghosts himself. How could he dare to go up and confront one?
The foreman, unable to read the compass, asked, “Daoist Li, is it a powerful ghost?”
Daoist Li had no idea how strong the ghost was. Thinking quickly, he bluffed, “This is bad. There are several ghosts here!”
The foreman and the others were so scared their legs turned to jelly.
Just then, someone spotted something slowly floating out of a fifth-floor window. “What is that?” he asked, tugging at the person next to him.
They looked closely and saw it was the coffin they had seen earlier in the day.
Terrified, they pointed at the coffin floating in mid-air, stammering, “There’s a coffin flying in the sky! Help!”
Unable to take it anymore, one of them screamed and ran away, stumbling over himself.
The man’s scream was so loud that everyone turned to look. Sure enough, the coffin was floating out of the window. Inside, there seemed to be a Long-haired Woman, leaning over the edge and looking down. Even in the dark, her cold, bloodthirsty eyes sent shivers down their spines.
“What the hell is that?”
“What the heck is going on?”
“Are ghosts real?”
“Daoist Li! Go deal with the ghost!”
Daoist Li hesitated.
Stepping forward, he shouted, “What manner of demon dares to cause trouble in the human world? Leave at once, or be destroyed!”
As he shouted, the woman in the coffin looked down at them. Her voice was cold, like an evil ghost from the depths of hell. “We’re just here to take back my coffin…”
She stood up in the coffin, looking down at them. Her long black hair swayed, and her eyes glowed ominously in the night.
Daoist Li’s legs went weak, and he took a few steps back. “You’ve got your coffin. Now leave!”
The Long-haired Woman grinned. “Don’t worry, we’re leaving…”
She stood in the coffin, which floated away into the night.
Daoist Li was speechless.
The foreman was speechless.
Everyone was speechless.
The men looked at each other, wiping the cold sweat from their foreheads. Once the coffin was out of sight, they finally snapped out of their shock, screamed, and ran!
The foreman tried to hide behind Daoist Li, but when he turned, he saw that Daoist Li was already running away, leaving only his back visible. He seemed even more scared than the foreman!
“Daoist Li? Where are you going? Why are you running? Come back!”
“Daoist Li??”
Watching Daoist Li run away, the foreman was dumbfounded.
Daoist Li was genuinely afraid. Others might not see it, only noticing the coffin flying in the sky. But with his Yin-Yang Eyes, he could see ghosts without any aid. He saw that it wasn’t just one ghost carrying the coffin.
If it were just one ghost, he might have managed. But there were three, four, five, six ghosts, and the Long-haired Woman in the coffin had eyes glowing red. Her aura of resentment was even stronger than any Malevolent Ghost he had ever encountered. She must be a super powerful ghost to command so many Little Ghosts to carry her coffin.
As a small Taoist, he couldn’t handle this. This was a case for the Special Unit’s Zhang Daoist.
He had to run for his life.
Help!
That night on Fumin Road was lively. Many people lying in bed could hear shouts of “Ghost!” and “Help!” outside.
Some curious ones got up to take a look, while others, less curious, turned over and went back to sleep.
Old Man Wang heard it too. He peered out the window, seeing the unfinished building shrouded in darkness, looking eerie. Surprisingly, he wasn’t scared this time.
He wondered where those ghosts would live now that the unfinished building was gone.
His wife said, “Go to sleep. Didn’t you freeze enough during the day?”
Old Man Wang sighed. This was the burden of knowing too much. He lay back in bed, glancing at his ankle, where there was a handprint. Not just him, but his grandson had a handprint on his wrist too.
He knew how those handprints got there. They were from ghosts!
The next morning, Old Man Wang’s wife, son, and daughter-in-law found that he was even sicker. Previously, they had called a Taoist to exorcise ghosts. Now, he was burning incense and Paper Money. Early in the morning, he went to the market to buy a pig’s head for braising. They thought it was to celebrate surviving a life-and-death ordeal. Little did they know, he intended it as an offering to the good ghosts who saved him and his grandson. He even had his grandson bow and pay respects, the child kneeling properly, bowing with all the formalities, looking quite serious.
This ritual became a regular occurrence, especially during festivals.
Old Man Wang’s family found it quite a headache.
But that’s a story for another time.
Gu Feiyin was nervous too. She hadn’t expected to encounter people when she came at night, and to be caught in the act no less. She was so flustered, fearing capture. After pulling off the talismans, she quickly sat in the coffin, urging the Neighbor Miss, Old Lady, and Headless Ghost to hurry up and leave. Getting caught would be disastrous!
They were clearly nervous too, carrying the coffin and floating away. Especially when they saw so many people below, they almost dropped the coffin in fright. Why were they all glaring at them like that? It was clearly ill-intentioned, especially with that Taoist holding Thunder Strike Wood, which was terrifying to ghosts.
“Why are they all out here? They were inside before.”
“Let’s go, let’s go. I hate dealing with these Taoists. They throw talismans at the drop of a hat, and ghosts are terrified of them.”
“I’m scared too. There are talismans everywhere. Let’s get out of here.”
Neighbor Miss and Old Lady carried the coffin, not wanting to spare even a glance.
They didn’t dare linger, putting all their effort into carrying the coffin away, fearing capture.
With nowhere to go for now, as the Middle-aged Female Ghost hadn’t returned since the morning, they had no place to settle. Gu Feiyin thought about it and decided to have the Headless Ghost take her to a nearby overpass. It was almost abandoned, with few people around, so it should be safe to temporarily store the coffin there.
The Red-Dressed Ghost followed behind Long Black Straight Hair, finally understanding what it meant to have no worst, only worse. She never imagined she’d become a ghost carrying a coffin around the world.
Neighbor Miss and Old Lady stood aside, clearly mourning the loss of their home.
Gu Feiyin gathered some firewood nearby. This place was good; she could light a fire without being noticed. While warming herself, she could roast sweet potatoes.
Thinking of the fragrant, steaming sweet potatoes made her mouth water.
She tugged on the fishing rod. “I want some crawfish. Go catch one for me to roast.”
The Water Ghost was speechless.
The Water Ghost just wanted to die. How did he end up provoking this demon?!
