Chapter 8
Zhou Ye’s expression changed as he looked at me like this.
I grabbed his hand. His palm was damp and cold, and I covered it with mine, feeling a pang of heartache.
“Kill her. That thought did cross my mind. My head was a mess at the time. For a fleeting moment, I felt like I had become my father-forced to stake everything in a desperate gamble. When you’re cornered, the gambler in you surfaces completely. Faced with survival, we can all become the most reckless of gamblers.
“In the end, I chose to trust her.”
Granny Zhang told us to drag the corpse into her kitchen, and we complied.
She first asked my mom what her plan was.
My mom used to love watching TV, but her knowledge of crime only extended to the destruction of evidence as seen in detective dramas. “Throw… throw it away? Dump it in the sea? The garbage dump?”
Her nonsensical rambling drew a cold laugh from Granny Zhang.
“What nonsense. The car-what are you going to use to transport it? Call a cab? Take the bus? What will you use to wrap it? A bag or a suitcase? Do you even have one?”
My mom shook her head in frustration. Granny Zhang’s sharp and practical questions left her completely defenseless.
“Calling a cab at this hour will definitely make people remember you. You don’t even have the basic tools-how are you going to dispose of it? The nearest bay is 130 kilometers away!
“Besides, the liver temperature of a human can be used to determine the time of death. Once they trace it back, none of you will escape.”
So what now? As we stood there at a loss, Granny Zhang spoke in a low, deliberate tone.
“It’s not that hard to handle.”
“If the body disappears… then naturally, there’s no time of death to measure.”
