Chapter 13
My unrelenting words tore apart the last vestiges of our dignity.
The divorce process went smoothly.
No entanglements, no arguments.
The staff reminded us to come back in a month to collect the certificate.
I nodded.
Jiang Ye had already gotten up to leave.
I called after him.
“When will you come to pack your things?”
He didn’t even turn his head.
“Just throw them away!”
Throwing them away was definitely not an option.
In the end, Jiang Heng packed up all his things.
After packing, Jiang Heng personally cooked a meal and opened a bottle of wine.
“Care for a drink?”
I didn’t refuse.
Jiang Heng drank a bit hastily.
After downing a glass, he tugged at the corner of his mouth and said, “I really didn’t know Jiang Ye had such feelings for you back then. If I had known…”
I shook my head with a smile.
And what if he had known?
Cut off our ill-fated relationship from the start?
Such regret is meaningless.
“Back then, both families disapproved of us being together. I still remember Jiang Ye saying, ‘I don’t know if I’ll regret being with her in the future. I only know that if I’m not with her now, I’ll definitely regret it.'”
“Is that why you were with him?”
I shook my head.
“No. It’s just, I was thinking the same thing back then.”
I propped my chin on my hand, swirling the wine in my glass.
“Actually, thinking back, I was much braver in my twenties than I am now. Back then, I dared to want a future with a boy five years younger than me. Now, I don’t dare. I’m not even sure if I’ll start another relationship.”
“Su He…”
Jiang Heng looked at me with a complex expression, filled with guilt, pity, and something else I couldn’t decipher.
I gave him a reassuring smile.
“Don’t worry about me. I just suddenly realized something. Love, when it comes, is grand and magnificent, but when it leaves, it’s devastating. What others give you is never lasting. But that’s okay. In this world, people die from illness or poverty, but I’ve never heard of anyone dying from a lack of love.”
I might have been a bit drunk.
And with Jiang Heng, an old friend, sitting across from me, I rambled on and on.
Jiang Heng listened silently, not saying another word.
The next morning, when I woke up, Jiang Heng was already gone.
He left me a note.
He said he had to catch a flight and wouldn’t wait for me.
He mentioned he had met a pretty nice girl and planned to be with her after returning.
He said, “Su He, take care!”
