Good Night, Mr. Ghost - Chapter 73
August 19th, the third day after the incident.
At the doorstep of Dong Feixi, the fifth chief crow spirit, a rare visitor arrived.
A man dressed in a black suit, despite a day and night of travel, still appeared as divine as ever. He wore black gloves, his dark hair cascaded down, and his face bore a somber expression.
Dong Feixi tilted his head and nudged the peach tree demon beside him, saying, “Is it true?”
The Alliance of Supernatural Beings had been abuzz with a rumor these past two days. The wife of the eighth chief had met with misfortune. Dong Feixi, the crow spirit, hadn’t dared to believe it.
The seventh chief, peach tree demon, nodded. “The eighth’s territory has gone mad.”
He gently peeled a walnut and placed it whole into Dong Feixi’s mouth. Their collusion wasn’t a recent affair; it could be traced back hundreds of years.
Meng Loudi entered, getting straight to the point, “Dong Feixi, I need you to do something for me.”
“Oh, what is it? Since the eighth has asked, let’s help out,” Dong Feixi sat up, a hint of interest on his face.
“They say the all-knowing demon is none other than crow Dong Feixi. Can you tell me where Chenyi is?”
Mr. Ghost looked at him, “As compensation, you can ask anything of me.”
He couldn’t stand it anymore; it had been three days, and there was still no sign of Chenyi. He had turned the Luo Family upside down but found no clues. Nowhere to be found, nowhere at all! It was as if he had vanished into thin air.
How could it be, how could it be, how could it be! He must be somewhere just out of sight.
Dong Feixi stroked his chin, “Who spread such rumors? I’m not all-knowing, at least not the divination you seek right now.”
Meng Loudi stood at the door, feeling a chill envelop him. The warmth, heartbeat, and happiness Chenyi had given him seemed to fade away with Chenyi’s disappearance.
The chilling aura from Mr. Ghost spread, dropping the room’s temperature by seven or eight degrees.
Dong Feixi looked at the terrifying specter, feeling a twinge of dread. Despite being of the same rank, he felt fear. Truly, oh-what a dilemma.
If he ignored this, it would spell disaster. Meng Loudi, this madman, would surely turn everything upside down.
Dong Feixi clutched his head, letting out a wail. “Brother! Why come to me? It’s a nightmare, a nightmare, a nightmare!” The crow spirit howled neurotically.
Meng Loudi gripped the door frame, leaving deep marks on it.
Peach tree demon leisurely peeled walnuts, piling them on a small plate in front of him. He asked nonchalantly, “Have you asked anyone else?”
“……” Meng Loudi nearly crushed the door frame.
Peach tree demon nodded, “I understand. We’re willing to help, but this kind of search is costly and inefficient. If you haven’t found them by now, there must be a reason.”
“The one who took him was a woman from the Luo Family. She carries an artifact that conceals her presence, leaving no trace of magic, making it impossible to find,” Mr. Ghost replied coldly.
Peach tree demon finished peeling the last walnut and pushed it towards Dong Feixi, saying, “I know a way, a way that will definitely work, but-it’s going to cost you dearly.”
Meng Loudi’s eyes lit up suddenly, “What way?!”
At this point, he would accept anything, as long as it could bring Jiang Chenyi back. He was willing to do whatever it took.
Peach tree demon spoke softly, “In the human world, there is a clan, a hidden family that has existed for centuries, contributing much to the world. They don’t have many businesses, but they do have a pawnshop.”
He held up a finger, “A pawnshop is, of course, a place where you pawn things. Their pawnshop deals in human business and ours too. It’s quite a formidable existence. Rumor has it they even have keys to other worlds. Anyway, you can find that pawnshop, go in, express your wish, and pay the price. That’s it.”
Meng Loudi didn’t blink, “Where is this pawnshop?”
The peach blossom demon thought for a moment and said, “There are supposedly several, but the one I know is in a small town, Molin Town, just north of D City. Oh, come on, let’s add each other as friends, and I’ll send you the address.”
Being a modern supernatural being, how could he not be adept with electronic devices?
After adding each other as friends, the peach tree demon found the address and sent it to Meng Loudi, casually mentioning, “Forgot to tell you, the pawnshop is called-Jiang’s Pawnshop.”
Thus, Mr. Ghost, clinging to his last hope, hurried to a remote little town.
It was truly remote, with hardly any cars on the streets, few young people, mostly elderly and children. The environment was beautiful but felt extremely outdated, carrying an ancient aura. It seemed that as the times progressed, this small place was overlooked, allowing it to grow quietly.
Bai Lu followed Meng Loudi, panting, as they entered Molin Town. Bai Lu was there to prevent him from losing control and doing something he shouldn’t.
Meng Loudi looked at the navigation on his phone, which could only guide him this far; the exact location of the pawnshop was still uncertain.
He glanced around and walked to a small shop. The shop sold tangyuan, wontons, and the like. The pot was steaming with something, and the place was quite deserted. Inside was an old lady with white hair.
Mr. Ghost looked at the fragrant food, feeling a pang in his heart. Chenyi would surely love these. Was his Chenyi cold, hungry, how was he…
His heart ached, and his eyes began to sting.
The shop owner noticed the man, shuffled over, and lifted her face, showing a friendly smile on her wrinkled face.
“Customer, would you like something?”
Mr. Ghost snapped back to reality, shook his head, and said, “No, uh, I’ll have a serving of wontons.”
“Alright, alright, my wontons are very tasty, they’ll be ready soon.” The old lady took out the ingredients, seemingly preparing to make the filling and cook them fresh.
It didn’t look like it would be quick at all.
Meng Loudi asked, “Grandmother, could you tell me if there’s a Jiang’s Pawnshop around here?”
The old lady nodded, “Yes, there is. Just go out the door and turn left. Walk a little further, and you’ll see a grove of locust trees. Walk through them, and at the very end, there’s a pawnshop.”
“Thank you.” Mr. Ghost nodded and turned to Bai Lu, “You stay here; I’ll go first.”
“Alright.” Bai Lu nodded.
Meng Loudi hurried out, following the directions given by the shopkeeper. He reached the deepest part of a narrow alley and saw a shop that looked quite grand compared to the rest of the town.
The sign was a bright red with golden lettering.
The shop appeared quite large, with three doors, though only one was open, draped with red silk, giving it a mysterious aura.
He stepped inside.
It was quiet, dim, and tranquil, with a faint fragrance lingering in the air.
“Is anyone here?” He lifted the red silk that hung throughout the room and asked.
Inside, there was a counter, and on it seemed to be a lump of white.
Meng Loudi approached.
The white lump stirred and suddenly stood up, with a soft voice, “Who is it?!”
“A customer,” Mr. Ghost replied softly.
He needed help now, so naturally, he had to be respectful and not offend anyone.
The white was a blanket, and the person underneath moved, pulling the blanket off to reveal themselves.
They appeared petite, with long white hair, skin as pure as snow, or like the finest rice paper, flawless and immaculate.
With delicate eyebrows, a fine nose, and cherry lips, their eyelashes were pure white and thick, with heterochromatic eyes of gold and red that shone on their face.
Like a young man.
Or a character stepped out from an ancient painting.
Adorned with gold and silver, covered in jewels and jade, wearing a black inner robe with a pure white outer robe, lavishly decorated, every edge and corner meticulously crafted.
Inherently noble, with an air of indulgence.
Like a unique treasure crafted by an artisan who poured their life and soul into it.
He looked at the visitor, still sleepy-eyed, rubbed his eyes, and said, “A customer? Hmm, it’s been a while since anyone came to the pawnshop. What do you want?”
“I want to find my lover,” Meng Loudi said as he approached the counter.
Up close, the person inside seemed even smaller, especially in front of the young man who stood at six feet tall.
But the doll-like youth blinked, “Oh, since you’re here, you must know the rules, right?”
“Yes.”
“…I’ve said so much, what’s your name? I’m the owner here, Bao’er.”
“My name is Meng Loudi.”
“…Wait! You’re Meng Loudi?!” Bao’er suddenly snapped out of his drowsiness, taking a few steps back in surprise, bumping into the cabinet behind him.
He scrutinized the man, then incredulously looked at the antique clock on his desk that had long stopped ticking.
Bao’er looked at his hands, his ten fingers twitching rapidly.
“Damn, how long have I been asleep?!” The youth cursed.
Mr. Ghost watched him, his mind momentarily muddled. This person knew him?
Perhaps someone else had mentioned him.
“Can we proceed with the transaction now?” Meng Loudi pressed his knuckles, feeling a bit anxious.
He didn’t want to waste another second; he was desperate to find Jiang Chenyi.
Bao’er moved slightly, calming down, and looked at him, “Repeat your request.”
“My lover, Jiang Chenyi, I need to find him.”
“Why?”
“He was taken away, and I need to bring him back.”
Bao’er bit his lip, asking, “Was it voluntary or forced?”
“Forced,” Meng Loudi answered patiently.
Bao’er couldn’t tell if he was relieved or more tense. He looked at the man, “So, you want to get him back, right?”
“Yes. Do you have a way?” Meng Loudi asked, a bit apprehensive.
Bao’er shook his head wildly, “No, no, no!”
