Chapter 7
At six o’clock the next morning, Li Shiyu came to my house to make breakfast.
This time, I was the one holding the camera, recording her as she prepared eight dishes and one soup at dawn, serving the Mother-in-law, my husband, and my daughter at the table.
I looked into the lens again and again, feeling utterly satisfied:
“She looks just like me!”
-Li Shiyu’s hands and mine were almost identical.
I’d noticed this at our first offline fan meeting.
After that, she tried hard to get close to me, her intention to poach my spot written all over her face.
I pretended to accept her friendliness, setting a trap for her to fall into. I hadn’t expected her to be so cooperative, falling right into it step by step, without delaying my filming schedule by even a day!
She struggled to bring the soup to the table, bending over with exhaustion, and was about to wipe her sweat when I called out:
“Click.
“You have to make it look effortless!”
Li Shiyu protested indignantly, “I’ve been working for two hours, of course I’m tired! What housewife has superhuman stamina?”
“It’s the script, just go with it.”
I comforted her:
“This is what the audience wants right now. Work a little harder now, and we’ll make good money later!”
Li Shiyu took a deep breath, rolled her eyes at me, but had no choice but to keep working.
She didn’t have a job now, and her savings were low, so I gave her an opportunity-
To appear in my videos without showing her face, cooking on my behalf, helping me with my persona transformation.
I’m not good at cooking, nor do I want to learn. Plus, I have to plan, edit, and manage operations, so I really need a stand-in.
After a full day of filming, Li Shiyu collapsed on the sofa: “Why don’t you just shoot those luxury wife videos like before? Why go to all this trouble to change your style…”
I didn’t even look up:
“The environment has changed. How can the content stay the same?
“With the economy down and workplace stress high, many women are either forced or choose to return home. This kind of seemingly effortless but all-capable housewife gives them something to refer to-
“Or at least serves as a comfort.”
Li Shiyu retorted stubbornly:
“Who says?
“There are plenty of career women. Not everyone wants to go home and be a pampered wife!”
I glanced at her speechlessly.
Li Shiyu realized, and her face flushed bright red.
…She really wasn’t convincing saying that.
