Chen Xu’s reaction made Jiang Xianyu realize that he might have taken a liking to her. However, she had no intention of agreeing.
Jiang Xianyu straightforwardly asked the Chen family, “How much dowry did you promise them?”
Mr. and Mrs. Chen exchanged glances, their smiles faltering slightly. But seeing their son’s expression, Mr. Chen replied, “Three hundred and eighty thousand. If that’s not enough, we can negotiate.”
Seeing that their attitude was decent, Jiang Xianyu didn’t want to embarrass them. “Sorry, I’m not planning to date right now, and I’m not ready to get married so soon.”
Sensing the situation going awry, the matchmaker turned to Father Jiang and Mother Jiang, “What’s going on? Didn’t you discuss this with your daughter before arranging the meeting?”
Jiang Hongtao was both embarrassed and annoyed, “Discuss what? We gave birth to her and raised her. Can’t we even decide this much?”
Chen Xu now understood that the Jiang family had arranged the meeting without their daughter’s consent. But he genuinely felt she was perfect for him; everything about her seemed just right, and she was exactly his type.
He tugged at his mother’s sleeve, “Mom, I want her.”
Mrs. Chen patted her son’s hand and exchanged a knowing glance with Mr. Chen.
Mr. Chen stepped forward, “We don’t care about your internal matters. What was agreed upon can’t be reneged. We’ve set our sights on your daughter today.”
This statement was rather forceful, and Jiang Xianyu’s expression darkened.
At this moment, Grandpa Jiang and Grandma Jiang, having heard the commotion, came out. Their house was adjacent to Jiang Hongtao’s, a simple two-room brick house.
“What’s going on? Let’s talk things over calmly. A matchmaking isn’t a feud; we’ll still be seeing each other often,” Grandma Jiang said.
Aunt, seeing Grandma Jiang, bristled like a fighting cock, “Who wants to see them often? With Xiao Yu’s looks and education, she can find anyone she wants. Who brings people home without saying anything like her parents?”
Grandma Jiang’s face was stern, but she said no more. She felt a bit guilty about what happened to her eldest granddaughter back then, especially when facing her eldest daughter-in-law.
Grandpa Jiang, however, wasn’t as apprehensive about his daughter-in-law. “This is ultimately a matter for the second family. As the uncle and aunt, you shouldn’t meddle.”
Seeing this, Jiang Xianyu shielded her uncle and aunt. “Since things have come to this, I might as well say everything I want to.”
“I am Jiang Hongtao’s daughter, but I don’t have to be.”
“I’ve thought it over. You don’t like daughters, so why not let me be adopted by Uncle?”
Turning to the Chen family, she said, “You should leave. I won’t agree to meet Chen Xu. My parents favor sons over daughters and would squeeze me dry.”
“This summer, they caused a scene at my company with Jiang Xinbao, costing me my job. Now they want to sell me to your family to extract my last bit of value. Do you really want to be in-laws with such a family?”
“Aren’t you afraid they’ll cling to you in the future?”
Now Mr. and Mrs. Chen were genuinely worried. But Chen Xu was still unwilling to give up, “It won’t be up to them then.”
Jiang Xianyu scoffed at his naivety, “Ever dealt with a real rogue? You can give it a try if you want.”
She wanted to settle the matchmaking issue first, so she asked Mr. and Mrs. Chen, “Is Chen Xu your only son?”
They nodded.
Jiang Xianyu smiled, “Then I advise you to give up. I’ve been forced to work since I was young, and it left me with a condition that makes my periods excruciatingly painful. If you’re hoping for many grandchildren, you should look elsewhere.”
The Chen Family could tolerate many things, but the prospect of difficulty in childbearing was a deal-breaker.
Chen Xu, however, was not ready to give up. Unlike his parents, he didn’t place much importance on this issue. He looked at Jiang Xianyu skeptically, “Are you saying this just to make us give up?”
Jiang Xianyu’s expression remained calm and factual, “I often take painkillers. The neighbors have seen me working since I was little, even washing clothes by the river in the dead of winter. You can ask around if you don’t believe me.”
“Given that, let’s call off the matchmaking,” Mr. Chen said.
But Chen Xu insisted, “With modern medicine, it’s just a condition. It doesn’t mean she can’t have children.”
Seeing Chen Xu’s persistence, Jiang Xianyu wasn’t worried.
Next, she decided to focus on the matter of adoption. “I’ve mentioned the adoption to you. Do you agree?”
Father Jiang and Mother Jiang were completely taken aback by the adoption talk, but they quickly snapped back to reality.
Mother Jiang immediately protested, “You ungrateful girl, what nonsense are you spouting?! We raised you, and now that you can earn money, you want to be adopted out? Do you think we’re fools?”
Father Jiang added, “Forget about it.”
Jiang Xianyu’s lips curved slightly, maintaining her gentle demeanor, “Alright then, since you’ve cost me my job, after the New Year, I won’t be going anywhere. You’ll be responsible for all my expenses.”
She glanced at their two-story house, “This house was built with my money. If I’m not adopted out, half of it is mine. The savings and assets are half mine too. Jiang Xinbao shouldn’t think he can have it all.”
“You can refuse, but I’ll take it to court.”
Father Jiang and Mother Jiang’s faces darkened, realizing how difficult Jiang Xianyu could be. They had underestimated her.
Jiang Xianyu then turned to Jiang Xinbao, “Xinbao, you’re in the logistics management department at Yang City’s vocational college, right? After the New Year, when school starts, I’ll pay your school a visit and see if you can still stay there.”
Jiang Xinbao was startled by her words.
But she wasn’t done yet. Jiang Xianyu continued, “Xinbao is in his third year, about to intern and find a job. As his sister, I should check on him often, just like you brought him to my company to ‘check’ on me.”
“I have plenty of time now that I’m unemployed.”
Father Jiang and Mother Jiang suddenly recalled Jiang Xianyu’s expression when they had shown up at her company-embarrassment, anger, fear, and vulnerability.
The thought of their son facing the same situation was like a knife to their hearts.
Even Grandpa Jiang and Grandma Jiang’s expressions changed.
They only had this one grandson and couldn’t bear to see Jiang Xianyu ruin him.
Jiang Xianyu chuckled, “Can’t handle it already? We’re not done. Aren’t you biased towards sons over daughters? When Xinbao is ready for matchmaking, I’ll tell the girl’s family that as a woman, I can’t watch a good girl jump into this mess.”
“Xinbao won’t have a good life in this lifetime.”
Jiang Xinbao finally broke down, “It’s Mom and Dad who mistreated you, why are you targeting me?!”
Jiang Xianyu’s tone was cold, “Because you’re their precious one. If you’re ruined, they’ll feel the pain.”
No one doubted Jiang Xianyu’s words now.
Her eyes told them she meant every word.
“Last night, the knife didn’t end up in Xinbao’s hand by sheer luck. Next time, who knows,” Jiang Xianyu dropped another bombshell.
This was the final straw that broke the camel’s back. Father Jiang and Mother Jiang were visibly shaken.
The Chen Family didn’t dare to make a sound.
This woman was a lunatic driven to madness.
No matter how much their son liked her, they couldn’t agree.
“The matchmaking is off. We’re leaving,” Mr. Chen said, turning to leave with his wife and son.
