From Dog to Goddess: My CEO Ex's Afterlife Regret - Chapter 2
When I got into the car, Meng Yichen was visibly impatient, tapping his index finger rhythmically on the steering wheel.
“Sorry, bro, I got a bit lost just now and took a while.”
He glanced at me, mocking, “You got lost in this cemetery? What a waste of a brain.”
His words were harsh and piercing.
In the past, as Bai Yashu, I often got lost too.
But back then, his reaction was completely different.
It was New Year’s Eve, and we went to watch the fireworks together.
After the event, the crowd was overwhelming, and I accidentally got separated from him. In a panic, I called him.
The moment the call connected, his voice was more anxious than mine.
Yet even so, he still comforted me.
“Don’t be scared, just wait where you are, I’ll come find you!”
“Okay.” I agreed timidly, “Bro, am I really that dumb?”
“Yeah, you little dummy, what would you do without me?”
Though he called me a dummy, his tone was full of affection.
I waited for him there, and he didn’t let me hang up.
Afraid I would feel uneasy, he chatted with me for a whole half hour, trying different ways to make me laugh, telling many embarrassing stories from our childhood.
Those were past events I had never experienced as someone who transmigrated into this story, yet the way he described them made me feel as if I had been there.
“Bro, if, I mean if, one day you couldn’t find me, what would you do?”
“What else could I do, keep looking.” His voice was full of nonchalance, “Turn around!”
I turned and saw Meng Yichen walking towards me through the swaying shadows of the trees.
The moonlight poured down like water, gently brushing away the shadows on his face.
I think, at that moment, I liked him.
If it were in the past, his cold words calling me dumb might have upset me.
But now, aside from feeling a bit chilly, I seemed to have no other emotions.
I seemed to have gotten used to his indifference, so I just smiled wryly, “Yeah, a bit dumb.”
Without waiting for his reply, I opened the small mirror in front of the passenger seat and touched up the lipstick that had smudged earlier.
Now, with a quarter foreign blood, my bone structure was more defined, my features more striking, vastly different from the delicate appearance of the past. Without some lipstick, I looked lifeless.
Meng Yichen was adjusting the navigation beside me, and I turned to ask him, “Bro, on the way back, could we stop by a cake shop? It’s my birthday today, and I still want to have a cake.”
He paused his actions, “You enter it yourself.”
I entered the address of the cake shop Bai Yashu often visited.
“Done.”
Meng Yichen glanced at it, then looked at me sideways, “This one?”
I nodded.
He snorted disdainfully, “Fine.”
When we arrived, he simply unlocked the car door, letting me go buy it alone.
I returned to the car with a strawberry cream cake.
As soon as I sat down, he questioned, “Do you really want to eat this one?”
“Why, is there a problem?”
I feigned ignorance; this was Bai Yashu’s favorite.
This time, Meng Yichen wasn’t impatient, just looked at me with a hint of amusement.
“It’s not that you can’t, just not quite suitable for you.”
“What suits me then?”
“You’d be better with Black Forest or Tiramisu, matches your skin better.”
After saying that, he started the car with a smile.
I could tell, he was mocking my dark skin.
This was a deliberately tanned wheat color, did he dislike it that much?
Holding the cake, I started searching for whitening products on my phone.
