From Breakup to Vows, Marrying My Ex to Prove a Point - Chapter 9
Susu sighed behind me. “I knew it.”
I tried to turn and look at her. “Knew what?”
But she held my head and forced it back around. “Nanjia says you’re having an affair with one of your patients and have already confessed your feelings to her. Also, that you have no intention of marrying Nanjia and are just playing with her. As for your side of the story, I can’t guess. You two talk it out.”
She pushed me into Mu Shi’s arms and glanced at her watch. “One hour. I’ll wait downstairs. If the issue isn’t resolved in an hour and Nanjia still wants to break up, I’ll take her with me.”
With that, she ignored my pleas and stepped into the elevator.
I tried to go after her, but Mu Shi grabbed my wrist and yanked me back.
The door slammed shut. He pinned me against the wall in the entryway and said, enunciating each word, “Chen Nanjia.”
“Can you stop with the drama?”
That word, “drama,” enraged me. I struggled free. “Me? Drama? Mu Shi, you’re the scumbag! You never cared about me, you never planned to marry me, you just wanted to play with me!”
Mu Shi didn’t respond immediately. He let go of my hand, closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them again, they were filled with an icy, suppressed fury.
“You say I don’t plan to marry you?”
His tone held a soft, dangerous edge. He turned and went to the bedroom, then threw his ID card and household registration book in front of me. “If you’re willing, I can marry you right now.”
“But would you dare?”
“Why wouldn’t I dare?”
I can’t stand being provoked. Besides, after a sleepless night and drinking, I was in a highly agitated state. I grabbed Mu Shi’s hand and dragged him outside.
Downstairs, Susu was still waiting.
She was slightly taken aback when she saw us. “Where are you two going?”
“To get our marriage certificate.”
Susu looked at me like I was insane, then turned her gaze to Mu Shi. “She’s lost her mind. Are you going to play along with her?”
“Why not?” Mu Shi said coldly. “I’d really like to see if she dares.”
I was so angry I could feel smoke coming out of my ears. I walked even faster. “Let’s go. Whoever backs out is a coward.”
It wasn’t until I was holding the two bright red marriage certificates in my hands that I finally began to calm down.
Back in the car, I turned to look at Mu Shi. He was looking at me too. “Calmed down? Regretting it?”
I was stubborn. “You’re only talking about me. What about you?”
He said flatly, “I’ve been calm the whole time.”
“Then let’s talk about Lu Yu now.”
I clutched the marriage certificate, my eyes fixed on him. “You weren’t supposed to be on the night shift yesterday, but when I called you, Lu Yu answered. She said I was your ex-girlfriend and that you had already confessed to her, that she was the one you like now.”
In truth, I hadn’t fully believed her words. It was just that Mu Shi hadn’t contacted me for three days, and I had seen the conversation with his mother.
The three things combined, and my emotions erupted.
But now that I was calm, I realized her words weren’t very convincing, and the timing of her call was too convenient.
Mu Shi’s expression suddenly turned cold. He took out his phone and checked it. “She deleted the call log. It’s true, yesterday wasn’t my night shift. But she slashed her wrists and showed up at the hospital, bleeding, saying she wouldn’t let anyone treat her unless she saw me. My colleagues were afraid she would actually die in the hospital, so they called me.”
“After I got there, she finally agreed to a blood transfusion and treatment. Then she said she didn’t have her phone and asked to borrow mine to call her parents. So I tossed my phone to her-” He paused. “For five minutes.”
In just five minutes, she had managed to call me to stir up trouble, delete the call log, and then pretend like nothing happened while calling her parents.
And Mu Shi had just said she had slashed her wrists and gone to the hospital, using her own life to threaten a doctor, just to see him.
Under my questioning, he finally told me the whole truth.
“When Lu Yu was hospitalized, I was her attending physician. After she was discharged, she kept messaging me relentlessly, so I blocked her. Then that night, she intentionally tore her clothes, hurt herself, and came to find me. I notified her parents, and they took her home. That same night, I called her parents and told them to watch her closely. She snatched the phone and said that if I didn’t see her, she would die.”
Mu Shi’s eyes dropped. “Later, when I refused to see her, she really did slash her wrists and come find me.”
I was dumbfounded. “Is she… mentally…” Unstable.
“That’s right,” Mu Shi said wearily. “She has a condition called Erotomania. That’s why she’s convinced I’m in love with her, convinced that we’re meant to be together. I’ve told her I’m in love with someone else, but it doesn’t register with her.”
I stood there, stunned. It took me a long time to find my voice. “But you never told me any of this before…”
“Because it’s all just trouble. I didn’t want you to worry, and I thought I could handle it myself.”
His voice faltered here, tinged with a rare hint of hesitation. “But it seems I still let you misunderstand. I’m sorry, Nanjia.”
Mu Shi rubbed his temples. There were faint dark circles under his eyes, a clear sign he hadn’t slept well last night.
I apologized in a small voice, too. “I’m sorry, Mu Shi.”
“But we’re a legally married couple now. In the future, please don’t hide things like this from me, okay? I just want you to let me into your world, not just fence off a little area for me and pretend it’s some carefree paradise.”
I tried to make the words sound solemn and serious, but my soft voice made it sound more like I was whining.
Mu Shi smiled faintly, leaned in, and kissed me. His warm breath ghosted over my lips.
He murmured, “Okay.”
