Forgotten Love - Chapter 4
After learning that Gu Huaian was discharged from the hospital,
our friends agreed to come over to visit.
But I didn’t expect someone to show up uninvited.
Seeing that I opened the door, Yang Fan looked a bit awkward:
“Uh, Sister-in-law…”
“Why are you here?”
I put on a cold face and questioned in a low voice:
“Didn’t get enough of sitting in the police station last time?”
“Shen Qingruan! I told you, last time was just a misunderstanding!”
Yang Fan’s voice was loud, but he was clearly lacking confidence.
He craned his neck, peering into the house:
“Hey, Brother Gu, I’m here!”
“Ah Fan? Why are you so late!”
Gu Huaian squeezed past me and hooked his arm around Yang Fan’s neck.
“Damn, how did you turn into a weathered old man?”
“Brother Gu, how could I compare to you!”
Yang Fan gave a thumbs up, grinning obsequiously:
“Back to 18 years old, you’re the real deal!”
“Don’t mention it, I’m so annoyed…”
Gu Huaian complained as he led Yang Fan to the living room.
Most of the friends who came today were ones Gu Huaian had made in recent years.
He’d told me not to mention his amnesia.
But now, not only had he secretly reconnected with Yang Fan behind my back,
he’d even told this scumbag everything about his memory loss…
I suppressed my displeasure and shot Yang Fan a warning look.
Maybe feeling guilty, Yang Fan kept quiet for most of the gathering.
But as the party was ending, he used the excuse of going out for a smoke.
When he got up, his elbow brushed Gu Huaian’s arm.
I saw the two of them head out to the balcony, one after the other.
Without thinking, I followed.
Separated by a wall, I could clearly hear Gu Huaian’s voice.
“Yang Fan, you said last time that we lost touch because Shen Qingruan sowed discord between us.”
“Did I really… fall for Shen Qingruan? Even to the point of giving up my brother for her?”
“Brother Gu, how could you possibly really like Shen Qingruan?!”
Yang Fan lowered his voice, sounding indignant:
“That woman is really scheming! Back when the Gu Family got into trouble, she took the chance to propose marriage to you.”
“On the surface, the Shen Family was standing up for Gu Corporation. But in reality, they just wanted to swallow up Gu Corporation!”
“I heard that in your company, the biggest shareholder is still Shen Qingruan’s dad!”
Yang Fan’s words were half true, half false.
But often, it’s words like these that are the most convincing.
Gu Huaian didn’t reply, but his frown deepened.
He held a cigarette in his mouth, flicking his lighter over and over.
“Damn!”
After several failed attempts to light it, he cursed irritably.
Hearing footsteps approaching,
I quickly turned and went back to the living room.
…….
After seeing all the friends off at the door,
I stopped Gu Huaian, who had put away his smile.
“Huaian, stay away from Yang Fan from now on, he used to…”
“Shen Qingruan, what are you afraid of?”
Gu Huaian interrupted me coldly:
“Be honest… you don’t really want me to regain my memory, do you?”
Suddenly, the phone call he made before the car accident flashed through my mind.
I was stunned for a moment, forgetting to refute him.
But my silence made Gu Huaian misunderstand.
His face instantly darkened, and he blurted out:
“I knew it, you’re not that kind-hearted. But I didn’t expect even Uncle Shen would take advantage of the situation…”
“Enough, Gu Huaian, if you flunked Chinese, stop misusing idioms!”
Just thinking about Yang Fan dragging my dad into this made me feel sick:
“If you believe everything people say, don’t be surprised if one day you get sold and end up helping count the money!”
“You-how could you eavesdrop on me and Yang Fan?!”
Gu Huaian’s eyes widened, his face flushing red.
Then, as if remembering something, he sneered:
“Heh, after all these years, you still haven’t kicked your habit of listening at the wall.”
I instantly understood Gu Huaian’s insinuation.
On the day we completely fell out,
it was because I accidentally overheard his conversation with his friends.
At that time, his friends joked casually,
saying Gu Huaian and I were like a bickering couple,
and asked if he liked me.
“Are you blind? How could I possibly like Shen Qingruan?!”
Gu Huaian denied it immediately.
He even exaggeratedly gagged:
“She’s been known as a bully since she was a kid. Now she’s grown up, she’s got a nasty face, nasty temper, nasty personality, not a trace of femininity!”
“Me, like her?! Do I look like I have a masochistic streak?”
Everyone was amused by his words and burst out laughing.
Any other girl would probably have cried after such an insult.
But just as Gu Huaian described,
I’d been a bully since I was little.
Never one to take crap, I kicked open the door,
and under everyone’s shocked gaze, gave Gu Huaian a good beating.
The next day, Gu Huaian, face covered in bruises, was dragged in front of me by Uncle Gu.
Utterly unwilling, he apologized for his reckless words.
“Uncle Gu, have you and Auntie really never considered having a second child?”
Ignoring Gu Huaian’s murderous glare,
I earnestly suggested to Uncle Gu:
“After all, this model is completely useless now.”
“Just looking at him feels like an insult to my eyes.”
From that day on, Gu Huaian and I officially became enemies.
Both of us soared, becoming the person each hated most in our hearts.
