For Your Happiness - Chapter 55 - Anticipation
Shao Han was flipping through the desk calendar in the study, looking at the dates, at the days she had marked in red, counting, “One week, two weeks, three weeks, twenty-one days, and now it’s 22, 23, 24 days. If it goes beyond 28 days, it’s very likely I’m pregnant.” She was talking to herself.
“What are you doing?” Wu Di came in to see her.
“Counting days.”
“What days?”
“What do you think?” Shao Han didn’t look at him, seemingly lost in thought, just responding mechanically.
“Is there another anniversary coming up?” Wu Di was afraid he had forgotten another important date.
Shao Han looked up and glared at him. By then, Wu Di had moved closer to her and saw the desk calendar in her hands and the circles she had drawn. He seemed to understand a bit.
“Shao Han.” Wu Di decided to have a talk with her.
“Hmm?”
Wu Di turned her chair around so she was facing him. “Although we really hope to have our own baby, I don’t want you to be so tense about it. It could backfire. A stressed mother or a happy mother-which do you think a baby would choose? If you keep this up, he might not come at all.”
“Oh, I understand, but…” Shao Han said, her voice filled with a sense of grievance.
“We will have a lovely baby. Why worry so much?” Wu Di pinched her cheek.
“I want to relax, but I can’t help feeling anxious.”
“Don’t force yourself to think about it. Let things take their natural course. Let’s see which baby likes us best, and he will come on his own.” Wu Di held her hand and spoke softly, his deep brown eyes piercing through Shao Han’s heart.
Shao Han pulled one hand free and placed it on his cheek. “I really want to have your child.”
“Of course, and I truly want you to have our baby. It will be yours.”
“Yep, I hope he’s as handsome and beautiful as you, using those eyes to charm the best woman.” Shao Han’s love was evident on her face.
“However…” Just as Shao Han was lost in her thoughts, she suddenly widened her eyes, “However, if I combine your eyes with mine one more time, what color would they become? Mine are black. Yours are brown. What about the baby? Dark brown?”
Shao Han’s sudden leap in thought made Wu Di laugh and cry at the same time. Smiling, he stood up and embraced her.
Every year-end, Wu Di would be very busy, so Shao Han stopped commuting with him. They often had to go their separate ways, and on cold days, Shao Han would always prepare warm meals and a bowl of aromatic soup at home, so that Wu Di could smell the delicious food the moment he entered the house.
“Wow, I wasn’t very hungry, but the moment I entered the house and smelled this, my mouth started watering,” Wu Di said as he dropped his car keys and ran into the kitchen.
“Hey, did you wash your hands? Go on, go change your clothes,” Shao Han said, tying her hair up while wearing a large SpongeBob apron, looking every bit the little housewife.
“Let me just taste it first,” Wu Di pleaded like a child about to steal some freshly cooked sweet and sour ribs.
“No way,” Shao Han slapped his hand away.
“Mean woman. Hmph!” Wu Di made a face and went to the dressing room to change his clothes, while Shao Han laughed at his retreating figure.
“Wow, there’s hot soup too. What soup? What soup?” After changing into his home clothes and washing his hands, Wu Di ran over, eager to lift the lid of the clay pot.
“Oh, chicken soup.”
“I’m drooling already,” Wu Di said as he picked up the chopsticks and started eating. “Mmm, everything you make is so delicious.”
Shao Han smiled helplessly: “With all this food, still can’t keep your mouth shut, can it?”
“Hehe.”
As they ate, Shao Han said to Wu Di, “Not good, I overate again. I’ve been too hungry these past few days. I’m going to gain weight.”
“So gain weight, I like it when you’re a bit chubby. What’s so good about being too thin?”
“No, it doesn’t look good.”
“It looks good. Who else do you want to look good for? I like it, isn’t that enough?”
“No, still, it’s better not to be too overweight, but I don’t want to be too thin.”
“Don’t worry about these things. Being healthy is what’s most important. Why make yourself suffer? Even if you look good, it’s for someone else to see, but try not to be too overweight, hehe.”
“You don’t like them chubby, I guess?”
“What I mean is that it’s okay to be a bit overweight as long as it doesn’t affect one’s health.”
“Oh. You keep yourself looking sharp, and then you want me to get fat? Then you’ll think other women look better than me,” Shao Han pouted.
“You won’t get fat, you’ll always be 18 in my eyes.”
“Hmph, smooth talker.”
“Anyway, you can exercise to lose weight but no starving yourself,” Wu Di commanded.
“Oh, okay, then you have to join me for a run.”
“No problem,” Wu Di agreed cheerfully, while Shao Han looked at him skeptically.
“What? Don’t believe me? Well… hehe, actually, there’s another kind of exercise that’s great for losing weight too,” Wu Di said with a mischievous grin.
Having known him so well, Shao Han immediately understood what he was hinting at: “You rascal.”
“This is something I must join you in if you need it, I’ll definitely help,” Wu Di said, laughing.
“Eat your food,” Shao Han, nearly driven mad by him, shoved a rib into his mouth.
After a few relaxed days, Shao Han suddenly remembered that tomorrow would be the 28th day, and she couldn’t help feeling a bit anxious.
Ah, tomorrow they would find out if their baby had successfully been conceived.
Actually, Wu Di also marked this special day in his heart. He didn’t mention or ask about it, not wanting to burden Shao Han, but he too was harboring some hope.
Though they had agreed to be transparent with no secrets, they were also protecting each other, not wanting the other to get hurt even a little bit.
Wu Di knew Shao Han wouldn’t easily stop thinking about it, guessing she was fretting over her own little worries. Afraid that she might get too nervous, he continually created a relaxed atmosphere, constantly engaging her in light conversation to keep her from overthinking.
“Let’s play a game today.”
“A game? What are we playing?”
“Zombies. I hear it’s really popular and fun.”
“…”
“Come on, join me; I can’t play these types of games well. Come help me,” Wu Di said, purposefully diverting Shao Han’s attention.
“Oh.” Shao Han moved closer, watching Wu Di’s clumsy hands tapping around on the iPad.
“Ah? You’re so clumsy, put it here… quick, come this way,” Shao Han was soon more focused on the silly zombies than anything else.
“Oh, quick, help me,” Wu Di looked at her and smiled joyfully. Shao Han was always serious about whatever she did, and he adored her earnestness.
