Chapter 2: I Do
“Grandpa, our family has everything it does today because of your leadership and my father’s hard work.”
“It has nothing to do with some so-called extraordinary man.”
“If you insist on marrying your granddaughter off to this pauper over something so nebulous, then I have nothing more to say!”
Tears immediately welled in Lu Muxue’s eyes as she put on a pitiful expression.
Even though Lin Feng stood well away from her, she covered her nose, as if he carried some nauseating smell. Merely standing near him seemed beneath her dignity.
“She’s right, Father. Please think this through!” Lu Jianwei chimed in at once.
Lu Zhengguo frowned deeply. In truth, he had no wish to marry his granddaughter to Lin Feng either.
But if word got out that they had broken the engagement, the family’s reputation might suffer.
“Mr. Lu, there’s no need to agonize over it. I don’t force people into things. Let’s just say my master was blind and misjudged your family.”
Lin Feng had intended to part on good terms. He hadn’t wanted to marry Lu Muxue in the first place.
The family’s attitude had wiped away the last of his guilt.
“Lin Feng, it isn’t that the Lu family won’t honor its word. The fact is, you and my granddaughter are worlds apart in status now.”
“Even if we forced you together, neither of you would be happy.”
“To compensate you, name your price. As long as it’s within our power, I’ll agree to it.”
Lu Zhengguo spoke with perfect gravity.
Lin Feng sneered inwardly. What a hypocrite.
“No need. I’m not the sort to cling to people who don’t want me…”
He was about to tear up the marriage agreement and leave when a familiar figure suddenly appeared before him.
“You!”
After leaving the hotel, Lu Wanqing had been thinking about the previous night’s business meeting. It had clearly been a trap laid specifically for her.
The prospective partner had been introduced by her older cousin, Lu Muxue.
They might be cousins in name, but Lu Muxue and her parents hated her.
Her father had once been the best candidate to succeed as head of the Lu family, both in ability and character.
But three years ago, Lu Hongwei had died in a car accident. He had even been branded an embezzler who had stolen company assets.
Only Lu Wanqing and her mother remained, with no one to rely on but each other.
Since then, her cousin’s family had targeted her at every turn. Her standing in the Lu family had plummeted until she had become almost invisible.
She had hoped that securing last night’s deal would persuade her grandfather to let her keep working for the Lu business.
That had been wishful thinking.
She had come to the family residence to beg him for another chance, only to find the man she had slept with last night.
“What are you doing here? Why have you come?”
Her immediate suspicion was that a million yuan hadn’t been enough for Lin Feng. He had come straight to her family to extort more and force her to comply.
She clenched her teeth so hard they almost cracked.
The man who had taken her virginity was a shameless scoundrel.
Noticing their odd expressions, Lu Zhengguo asked, “Wanqing, do you two know each other?”
Before she could answer, Lin Feng spoke.
“Mr. Lu, this young lady is…?”
“Another of my granddaughters. Her name is Lu Wanqing.” Lu Zhengguo answered without giving it much thought.
Lin Feng’s grin spread almost from ear to ear. He had never imagined that the woman he had spent the night with was also a daughter of the Lu family.
Now everything made sense.
No wonder the side effects of his Nine Dragons Sacred Physique had disappeared.
Did all the women in this family have special constitutions?
Lu Wanqing stared in bewilderment. Judging by her grandfather’s behavior and Lin Feng’s, he hadn’t told anyone what had happened between them.
“Grandpa, this pauper’s marriage agreement only says he has to marry a daughter of the Lu family. It doesn’t give a name.”
“Wanqing is old enough to marry now. Why not let her do it?”
“I’m sure she’ll put the family first, for the sake of our reputation.”
Lu Muxue wore a malicious smile.
“Father, I think Muxue has a point,” Jiang Ying added, making matters worse. “Wanqing hasn’t dated anyone all these years. People are saying she likes women instead of men.”
“This marriage would put those rumors to rest.”
With mother and daughter urging him on, Lu Zhengguo considered it for a while, then asked Lin Feng, “Since Muxue is unwilling, I can’t force her. Wanqing is my granddaughter too. Perhaps…”
Lin Feng couldn’t wait for him to finish.
“I do!”
Lu Zhengguo blinked. He hadn’t expected such an eager answer.
Anyone with eyes could see that Lu Wanqing held little standing in the family. He had been worried Lin Feng might refuse.
Instead, the young man had agreed without a moment’s hesitation. That saved him the trouble of persuading him.
Lu Wanqing, whose marriage they were discussing, was utterly confused.
Why did it sound as if they had just settled her future?
“Grandpa, I…”
She was about to object, but his next words stopped her cold.
“Once you’re married, you’ll take over as CEO of the pharmaceutical company.”
Lu Wanqing stared at him in disbelief.
Lu Pharmaceuticals had been her father Lu Hongwei’s life’s work. After his death, her eldest uncle’s family had taken it over.
The once-thriving company had soon gone downhill under her uncle’s management, becoming a burden on the Lu business.
Lu Zhengguo had repeatedly considered closing it down. Each time, Lu Wanqing had begged him to put her in charge instead.
She wanted to fulfill her father’s dream.
Every time, her grandfather had refused without hesitation.
Now, to make her marry this man, he had finally relented.
And she had already slept with the man anyway.
For Lu Pharmaceuticals, for her father’s dream, she could grit her teeth and endure it.
Lin Feng gazed at her with undisguised delight. “Looks like it was meant to be, honey!”
Lu Wanqing knew exactly what he meant. They should have gone their separate ways and never seen each other again.
Instead, a bizarre twist of fate had made them an actual married couple.
She glared at him, then turned to Lu Zhengguo. “I’ll leave the arrangements to you, Grandpa.”
Lu Zhengguo smiled calmly. Everything was settled.
“There’s no sense delaying a happy occasion. Wanqing, it’s still early. I’ll make a call and have your marriage certificates arranged.”
With the Lu family’s standing in Jiangcheng, they didn’t even need to go in person. Someone could be sent to handle it at the house.
Lu Muxue was terrified that Lu Wanqing might change her mind. She was desperate to see the marriage made official as soon as possible.
Before long, two staff members from the civil affairs bureau arrived and processed their marriage registration.
Looking at the bright red marriage certificate in her hands, Lu Wanqing felt as if she were dreaming.
“You really should thank me, Wanqing. If I hadn’t rejected this pauper and let you have him, people would still be calling you a lesbian for years.”
“A pauper and a lesbian. What a perfect match!”
Lu Muxue laughed haughtily.
Lu Wanqing said nothing. She knew perfectly well that her cousin was the one who had started the rumor.
“Say what you like about me. I won’t hold it against you. But insult my wife, and I will lose my temper!”
