Falling for the Best Man, A Second Chance at Love - Chapter 1
After I signed the divorce papers, Gu Huaichen let out a long sigh of relief.
“Shen Xian, it’s really good that you’ve finally come to terms with it.
“We may not be husband and wife anymore, but we can still be friends.
“Linlin also wants to thank you for giving us your blessing. You’re still her best friend.
“From now on, if you ever need anything, just let me know.”
The corners of my mouth curled into a mocking smile.
He had brought up divorce half a year ago.
I asked him why.
He said he didn’t love me anymore.
From school uniforms to wedding gowns, we had walked hand in hand for fifteen years.
The vow we willingly made to grow old together couldn’t withstand the erosion of five years of marriage.
I watched helplessly as fifteen years of my youth came to a miserable end.
Out of some stubbornness and resentment, I dragged things out for half a year.
And he simply stopped coming home, cutting off all contact with me as if in retaliation.
He forced me to give in with the most basic form of cold violence.
From beginning to end, he only said one thing:
“Aside from handling the divorce, there’s nothing left for us to talk about.”
Until yesterday at noon, my best friend Ye Kelin asked me out for a buffet.
I went to the five-star hotel where we had arranged to meet.
As soon as I stepped into the hotel, I saw Gu Huaichen and Ye Kelin approaching, behaving intimately.
The three of us stood frozen at the hotel entrance.
Gu Huaichen instinctively shielded her behind him:
“Shen Xian, I’m the one who fell for her. This has nothing to do with her.
“If you’re angry, take it out on me. Don’t drag her into this.”
Ye Kelin clung to his arm, looking at me timidly:
“Xianxian, I’m sorry, I know I’ve hurt you…
“But I really couldn’t help falling for him.”
Both of them watched me warily, afraid that I’d cause a scene in public.
I stood there expressionless.
It felt like my heart had been tossed into a blender, shredded to pieces.
So this is what it feels like when pain reaches its limit-utter numbness.
If Gu Huaichen’s betrayal was a knife plunged into my heart,
then Ye Kelin was the deadly poison smeared on its blade.
She destroyed my fifteen-year love,
and cruelly wiped out my years of friendship as well.
I looked at them coldly.
Even I was surprised at how calm my voice sounded.
“Let’s go finalize the divorce tomorrow.”
I walked past them, heading straight to the buffet without looking back.
That day, all I felt was an emptiness in my stomach-no matter how much I ate, it couldn’t be filled.
