Chapter 53 - Sacred Mountain in Myanmar (Part VII)
Chen Shaoxian saw the creature finally emerge and charge toward them. He fired his gun without checking if he hit the target and immediately shouted, “Spread out!”
The others, all former special forces, had already assumed tactical positions without needing Chen Shaoxian’s reminder. The creature showed its head only briefly before vanishing into the fog again.
Everyone watched the dense fog intently as Chen Shaoxian picked up a burning branch from the campfire. Without worrying about starting a larger fire, he threw it into the fog to expand their circle of light.
The only sounds were the crackling of the burning branches and the tense breathing of the group.
The bell rang sharply once, and Chen Shaoxian, eyes fixed ahead, warned the others, “It’s coming.”
No sooner had he spoken than the massive figure reappeared in the black fog, charging rapidly toward their position.
The group fired at the huge silhouette, their weapons spitting flames. Bullets hit the creature with thudding impacts.
Seemingly unfazed, the creature charged directly into their midst, heading straight for them.
“Spread out! Don’t leave the circle.” Chen Shaoxian yelled.
Seeing the creature, Song Yumu exclaimed, “Shaoxian, is this the beauty you were talking about?”
What appeared before them was a gigantic boar, as large as an elephant, with greenish skin and thick brown hair like armor over its body. Its long tusks jutted out like ivory, and it periodically exhaled foggy breaths. Its eyes glowed red as it stared them down.
Chen Shaoxian quickly slung his rifle over his shoulder and drew the evil-slaying blade from behind his back, shouting to the others, “It’s a mountain boar.”
As he charged with his blade, the mountain boar saw him coming and roared, charging at Chen Shaoxian with its long tusks.
Chen Shaoxian dodged the boar’s tusks and stabbed toward the creature’s ear with his blade.
The mountain boar shook fiercely, causing Chen Shaoxian’s strike to veer off, piercing its neck instead. Despite the powerful thrust, the blade only made a small cut.
However, from this small incision, blue smoke emerged, and the boar howled in pain. It kicked back at Chen Shaoxian with its strong hind legs like a horse.
Chen Shaoxian immediately dropped to the ground and rolled right next to Xiao Zhuang. He whispered to Xiao Zhuang, “Aim for the eyes.”
The mountain boar, having been stabbed by Chen Shaoxian, was slightly wounded and became somewhat enraged.
Charging at Chen Shaoxian, Xiao Zhuang saw the mountain boar coming and fired his gun, then swiftly kicked Chen Shaoxian away, using the force of the kick to quickly back off.
By then, the mountain boar had reached where the two men had just been.
Chen Shaoxian, kicked away by Xiao Zhuang, thought dejectedly, “I could have dodged that.”
At this moment, the mountain boar was howling mournfully, its front legs constantly stamping the ground, the force nearly knocking everyone off their feet.
Knowing Xiao Zhuang had made his shot, Chen Shaoxian shouted loudly, “It’s angry now, shoot at the head, not the butt.”
Gunshots rang out, and bullets splattered on the mountain boar’s head, some deflecting off its thick skin, some penetrating into its mouth. The immense force tore through the flesh in its mouth, emitting a hissing smoke.
Hurting, the mountain boar, now blind, started charging wildly, and suddenly burst out of the circle. Just outside the circle, the thick fog rapidly enveloped the mountain boar, seeping into its nostrils, eyes, and wounds, as it let out low, mournful groans. As the fog gathered around the mountain boar, Chen Shaoxian quietly slipped out of the circle.
With everyone unable to see through the fog, they stopped shooting, panting heavily and staring at the swirling mist.
While the mountain boar had been rampaging within the circle, causing everyone to be on the run, Xiao Zhuang suddenly realized that Chen Shaoxian was missing, and started to feel anxious.
Just as he was about to ask the others, he saw the dense fog violently shake, and from within, the mountain boar let out a thunderous roar, surprisingly scattering the fog with the power of its roar.
After the thick fog dissipated, Xiao Zhuang and his group saw a knife sticking out of the mountain boar’s anus, causing it unbearable pain. The boar, driven to madness, charged left and right, its roars so loud that everyone’s eardrums swelled, and the nearby trees shook violently, dropping a multitude of leaves.
This shocking scene left everyone somewhat stupefied.
Suddenly, Xiao Zhuang noticed Chen Shaoxian crawling toward the group from not too far away, and soon Chen Shaoxian had entered the circle.
As soon as he crawled in, Chen Shaoxian stood up and said to the others, “Quick, throw the grenades.”
The other five people pulled out five grenades and hurled them at the still frantic mountain boar.
The booming sounds echoed through the forest, and the massive shockwave lifted the thick layer of leaves and soil off the ground.
The severely injured mountain boar gasped heavily on the spot, gradually becoming unstable on its feet. Normally the king of the forest, it was having an unfortunate day-first, it was blinded in one eye, then Chen Shaoxian blew up its anus, and now it was battered by the grenades.
With one blood-red eye, the mountain boar glared at the people in front of it, took several deep breaths through its nose, then quickly turned and disappeared into the dark forest.
Seeing the mountain boar flee, Chen Shaoxian exhaled deeply, lit a cigarette, and laughed, saying to the others, “Didn’t expect to have a fight with a mountain boar.”
After such an ordeal, no one felt sleepy anymore, so they gathered around the campfire to chat.
Song Yumu, curious, asked, “Shaoxian, how did we even come across that thing?”
Chen Shaoxian scratched his head. “It might be my fault. That python corpse during the day was probably the mountain boar’s meal, and I left it with just a layer of skin. With nothing to eat, it came looking for trouble with us.”
Xiao Zhuang then said, “That person-like figure in the thick fog earlier looked a bit like a Japanese soldier from World War II.”
Chen Shaoxian responded directly, “Those were Japanese soldiers. When hunting, the mountain boar emits thick fog that disorients its prey, which it then kills and eats. Moreover, this fog helps the mountain boar heal.”
“The mountain boar also has a characteristic where its urine acts as a preservative, and it turns its food into Vengeful Spirit Corpses, which would deliver themselves to its mouth when it’s hungry.”
“After the mountain boar consumes its prey, their forms appear in the fog, which is also known as Vengeful Spirit Fog. The mountain boar is clever; it can differentiate among types of food, allowing it to conjure images of the prey’s own kind or natural enemies in the fog. It seems this creature has also made significant contributions to anti-Japanese efforts. Had I known, I wouldn’t have stabbed so deep earlier.”
Xiao Zhuang looked worriedly at Chen Shaoxian and said, “Shaoxian, what you did was too dangerous.”
