- Chapter 75 - The Private Brand Event
Lin Cheng blinked in confusion.
What was he apologizing for?
Through hazy eyes, she looked at his unusually flushed face. Was that a rare trace of regret?
Was he… apologizing because he thought he was a bad kisser?
Wasn’t the captain taking customer service a little too far?
“Uh…” She licked her tingling lips. “I wasn’t complaining.”
Suddenly, she felt as though she had taken advantage of him, and now the victim was sitting here examining his own faults.
“It was… pretty good…”
With that, she reached out and clumsily ruffled his bowed head.
His blue-black hair hid most of his lowered eyes, making his feelings unreadable.
“Mm.”
A few seconds later, he suddenly asked, “Can we continue?”
Her heart sped up. She froze for two seconds.
“N-no! I’ll be late for the event!”
He gave an almost inaudible “Mm” and got out of bed.
Lin Cheng trotted into the bathroom. Looking out at his back, she put a toothbrush in her mouth and asked indistinctly, “Captain, are you passing through City Z for another event?”
He was bending to pick up his outdoor jacket from the floor. He paused.
“Had something to do. It’s finished.”
“Oh…” Brushing her teeth, she felt oddly empty. “Are you leaving, then?”
“Mm.” He straightened.
He had to get back before Ji Hanzhou found out. There was an online livestream that evening, too. He couldn’t disappear for too long.
“That man yesterday…” She remembered the stalker fan.
“Handled.”
“Oh…”
She lowered her head. Thinking about Jiang Si, she felt a faint ache. After wrestling with herself for a while, she looked up at him with bright eyes.
“Captain, is there a difference between once, twice, and three times?”
His hands paused over his buttons. He raised an eyebrow at her.
“No.”
That answer gave her courage.
She ran over, rose on tiptoe, and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.
“You said there’s no difference! I’m going to get my luggage. Bye!”
Jiang Si stayed where he was and touched his cheek. A little toothpaste foam remained on his fingertip.
He laughed softly, curling his fingers and enclosing that trace of moisture in his hot palm.
—
Two in the afternoon.
The private event for Pm’s jewelry carnival filled the top-floor banquet hall with elegant guests and expensive perfume.
Pei Jinye sat alone. A few strands of his deep-red hair, styled to look wet, fell casually across his forehead. He wore a black suit, and the brand’s ruby necklace, set with diamonds in a V, made him look both more privileged and more unruly.
His long fingers played with a glass of red wine, though he hadn’t taken a sip.
Several wealthy women and socialites came over to talk. After receiving only a cool nod, they kept their distance.
His languid eyes swept diagonally across the long table.
Fuck.
Of everyone here, the little sissy was the busiest!
Lin Cheng was charming people on all sides, surrounded by beautifully scented, expensively dressed women.
“You deserve to wear expensive things. With a face that elegant, how could you not?”
“Oh, Little Chen always knows what to say! I love hearing that. I’ll take it. Think of it as me buying you milk tea.”
“I’ll stand in front. That’ll make all your faces look smaller.”
“One more photo.”
“This twenty-five-carat ring is perfect. Lift your coffee cup and casually blind your date across the table.”
“Wrap it up,” the woman replied.
Lin Cheng was naturally sweet-tongued and funny. With these well-groomed, fragrant wealthy women and heiresses, she was even more in her element.
Pei Jinye tipped his glass back and drained it.
“Jinye, you look so grumpy.”
Shi Yu wore a black suit too. His chestnut curls had been straightened to lie softly over his forehead, with a short mullet extension at the back. A jade stud pierced the cartilage of his left ear, lending him a wildness he didn’t usually have.
He followed Pei Jinye’s gaze.
“Little Chen really has a way with women. Makes you jealous, doesn’t it?”
Pei Jinye forced out through his teeth, “Way with women, my ass.”
“Shi Yu.”
“Hmm?”
Loosening his collar, Pei Jinye said, “Go sell that pretty face. Lure away the two younger ones on the left.”
Shi Yu stared.
“The three older ladies on the right…” Pei Jinye closed his eyes like a man marching to his death. “I’ll handle them.”
Shi Yu gave him an Are you okay? look.
Five minutes later, Pei Jinye stood rigidly among three elegant women, a vein jumping at his temple.
Shi Yu was having an easier time. He had already charmed the two heiresses into delighted smiles.
When both men happened to glance toward where Lin Cheng had been—
Where was she?
She had moved to another table.
The same scene was playing out all over again.
Pei Jinye and Shi Yu had no words.
At last, the event ended, though Lin Cheng could happily have kept going.
She didn’t return to the hotel with them. After sending each a message, she slipped away.
Wearing a cap and mask, she entered the mall and immediately spotted an enormous Wild7 endorsement poster.
She stopped and took out her phone to photograph herself with it.
After only two pictures, her phone rang.
Xie Zhi was calling.
She answered. “Hello?”
His lazy, amused voice came through the phone. “Baby, what are you doing?”
“Shopping.”
“Okay. My urge to spend money is acting up.” He chuckled. “Turn around.”
Phone pressed to her ear, she spun around.
Behind her was only the bustling crowd. No familiar figure anywhere.
Her brows drew together. “Hey, are you messing with—”
A light tap landed on her shoulder before she could finish.
She turned and met a pair of teasing, smiling eyes.
“Caught you.”
Her heart skipped in fright. She took a step back.
“Xie Zhi! What are you doing here?”
He swept her into his arms. “You little menace.” Lowering his head, he rubbed his nose affectionately against the brim of her cap. “You came to City Z and didn’t come find me? Hmm?”
“I waited outside your event hotel for two hours before I saw you sneaking out.”
“I have something important to do. Besides, aren’t you filming?”
She turned sideways and slipped from his embrace.
“What? I’m not allowed to hold you?” His brows tightened.
“It’s not that…” She was a little nervous. “Isn’t it too soon? We’ve only just met up and we’re already hugging?”
His eyes narrowed. “Come here.”
“Otherwise, I can’t promise I won’t do something to warm things up between us.”
Lin Cheng glanced around nervously, grabbed him, and dragged him toward a less crowded spot.
“Shut up! What if somebody hears?”
Xie Zhi let her pull him along, his eyes curving.
So cute.
…Fine.
He could settle the score with her later.
“Tell me. What important thing did you sneak out to buy?”
She turned her face away and mumbled, “…A dress.”
“A dress?” He stopped, his tone dangerously inquisitive. “Who are you planning to wear it for? Hmm?”
“Stop talking nonsense!” Lin Cheng strode ahead. “My mom’s pregnant. There’s going to be a family banquet, and I need to dress properly!”
