Chapter 3
My arm hurt, but my heart hurt more.
I went to the hospital alone to have my wounds bandaged and get medication.
As I was leaving, I passed by a hospital room and happened to see Qu Yi sitting on the bed, her eyes red.
Jiang Ciyue was gently wiping away her tears, comforting her in a soft voice.
“Don’t cry. The doctor said a small scratch like this won’t leave a scar.”
“I’ll teach Shi Wan Ju a harsh lesson this time. I’ll get justice for you.”
I stood frozen outside the door, watching the tenderness he showed her.
Suddenly, I remembered when I was sixteen, bullied by a few thugs.
Jiang Ciyue had wiped my tears just like that, whispering gently, “Don’t cry. I’ll take care of them for you.”
And then he beat those thugs until they were on their knees, begging for mercy.
But now, all he had for me was disgust.
Qu Yi sniffled, then asked tentatively, “But Shi Wan Ju is your lawfully wedded wife. Can you really bring yourself to be so harsh with her?”
Jiang Ciyue let out a sudden, scornful laugh, his tone dismissive.
“This marriage was something she schemed her way into.”
“I never wanted to marry her. I don’t love her. Why would I hold back?”
Qu Yi’s tears turned to a smile. She hugged him, cooing, “I knew you were the best to me.”
Her gaze passed through the crack in the door and landed on me. She raised her eyebrows triumphantly and mouthed silently, “You lose. Again.”
Normally, I would have burst through the door and slapped her.
But in that moment, I felt like I had lost all my strength, all my will to fight.
It was true.
Jiang Ciyue didn’t love me.
What was the point of fighting with Qu Yi?
Even if I won the fight, won the argument, I would still be the loser.
I lowered my eyes and dragged my heavy legs away.
