Day 29 of the Divorce Cooling-off Period, My Husband Lost His Memory - Chapter 9
Chapter 9
On the day the guarantee case was unfrozen, I met Attorney Qin.
She was a short-haired woman who spoke very quickly.
She pushed the documents in front of me.
“Mr. Zhou came to see me two months ago. He made it clear that after the divorce, all marital assets were to be used first to compensate you.”
I flipped to the last page and saw Zhou Yue’s signature.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
Lin Zhi was unaware of this and will not bear any of Nanting’s debts.
Attorney Qin glanced at me.
“He originally planned to give these to you after you two registered your marriage.”
I asked, “Why after?”
“He said that by then, you no longer trusted him. If you knew in advance that he was investigating the Zhou Family, his mother might have set her sights on you.”
I said nothing.
Attorney Qin handed me another document.
“There’s also this.”
It was a property transfer agreement.
For the apartment we bought after we got married, Zhou Yue had transferred his entire share to me.
I frowned.
“I don’t want it.”
Attorney Qin said, “You don’t have to take it, but I suggest you read the attachment first.”
The attachment was handwritten by Zhou Yue.
The house is not compensation for feelings.
It is compensation for the housework Lin Zhi actually shouldered after marriage, the caregiving, the interruption to her career, her medical expenses, and the emotional toll.
Please do not call this generosity on my part.
I owe her.
I looked at those few lines, and it felt as if something had tapped softly against my heart.
It didn’t hurt.
But it left a dull ache.
What I used to hate most about him wasn’t that he hadn’t given me enough money, nor that he hadn’t given me a wedding.
It was that he always thought the things I gave didn’t need to be counted.
His projects were his career. Me taking time off to accompany his mother to follow-up appointments was just something I did along the way.
His overtime was hard work. Me getting up in the middle of the night with stomach pain to make congee was being dramatic.
Him cleaning up Zhou Ming’s messes was family love. Me holding an entire home together for him was being sensible.
Now he had finally written all of it down on paper.
But I no longer wanted to stand where I was and wait for him to learn.
After I signed the documents, Zhou Yue was waiting for me downstairs.
He didn’t ask what I had signed.
He simply placed a key in my hand.
“The locks have been changed. If you want to live there, live there. If you don’t, sell it.”
I said, “You don’t have to do this.”
“I do.”
He looked at me.
“You once said you wanted a place where no one could ever chase you away.”
I remembered saying that. It was when we had just gotten married.
Back then, we were renting, and the landlord suddenly raised the rent. I was so angry I crouched in the stairwell and cried.
Zhou Yue crouched beside me and wiped my tears.
He said, “Someday, we’ll buy a home, and your name will be on it.”
Later, we did buy a home.
Both our names were on the deed.
Zhou’s Mother said that when a married couple put both names down, it made them look like a real family.
At the time, I thought so too.
Now the key lay in my palm, cold and heavy.
I asked, “You remembered?”
Zhou Yue nodded, then shook his head.
“Only a little.”
“What part?”
“When you said that, your eyes were very red.”
He paused.
“At the time, I thought I would never let you cry like that again.”
He gave a bitter smile.
“In the end, most of the times you cried after that were because of me.”
