Chapter 10
Unable to wait for the ring any longer, I finished packing all my luggage and thought I might as well leave first.
But.
Before I even reached the door, Gu Xuchen burst in, looking travel-worn. His bespoke suit should have looked elegant, but somehow his tie was crooked.
“Where are you going?”
With one hand braced on the doorknob, Gu Xuchen looked at me, panting.
“There’s a divorce agreement on the table. I’ve already signed it. Take a look-if there’s no problem, just sign it.”
I gripped the handle of my suitcase, answering with something unrelated.
Gu Xuchen’s gaze turned a little cold. “I won’t sign.”
I almost wanted to laugh, and solemnly reiterated to him, “President Gu, you’re not getting too into character, are you? This is a fake marriage.”
In that instant.
Gu Xuchen’s expression shifted slightly, his brows furrowing. “Divorce is too sudden. I need some time to explain things to my mother. Before I’ve made things clear to her, you can’t leave here.”
Me: …
I was stunned for a moment, then said softly, “I can explain.”
Gu Xuchen: “No need.”
I pressed my lips together, not knowing what to say.
Gu Xuchen reached out, snatched away my suitcase, tossed it aside, and said coldly:
“Didn’t you want the ring? Let me look for it.”
Me: …
I had no idea how long he would take to look, but I really did want to leave-only my pockets were embarrassingly empty.
After weighing my options.
I decided to stay and started frantically taking on work orders.
It’s almost laughable.
I used to work hard to get close to him; now I work hard to get away from him.
“Mm, ok, minor adjustments are possible. I can speed up the draft, but the price is non-negotiable.”
“Today’s Thursday. I’ll get it to you by next Friday.”
I casually grabbed a stainless steel clip to tie up my hair, plopped down on the floor, pushed up my glasses, and replied to messages while eating takeout.
Unknowingly,
My work schedule for the entire month was already full. If all went well, I could make a tidy sum.
Click.
The front door suddenly opened.
I still had noodles in my mouth and instinctively looked over.
Gu Xuchen was holding a box of red wine. When he looked at me, a clear hint of surprise flashed in his eyes.
“Didn’t I message you? We’re having steak tonight.”
“Huh?”
I froze, glanced at my phone with 99+ unread messages, and remembered I’d removed him from my pinned chats. Feeling a bit flustered, I scrolled through my phone:
“I didn’t see it.”
“Then why did you always see my messages before?”
Gu Xuchen’s thin lips moved slightly, clearly displeased. He set down the wine box, took off his suit jacket and tossed it on the sofa, then sat down and stared at me:
“Are you deliberately ignoring me, or did you really not see it?”
I lowered my gaze, turned off my phone, and continued eating my cold noodles:
“Then when you didn’t reply to my messages before, was it on purpose, or did you really not see them?”
Nothing is more awkward than sudden silence.
I already know the answer now, but Gu Xuchen’s reaction still made me even sadder. I used to think he was just busy.
Gu Xuchen: “I was very busy with work.”
I lowered my head: “I have work to do too.”
In the end.
Before he could speak, I said, “No talking while eating or sleeping. I’m eating now, so please don’t talk to me.”
Gu Xuchen: …
Gu Xuchen started taking deep breaths again, as if that was the only way to calm himself. He just leaned back on the sofa, long legs crossed, watching me eat.
He’s the kind of person who exudes a strong sense of pressure.
I didn’t dare look up, just ate my noodles slowly. Eventually, I couldn’t take it anymore and wanted to play a movie on my phone to ease the tension, so I randomly scrubbed through the progress bar.
As a result, a character in the movie screamed, “I want a divorce! I can’t live like this for even one more day!-”
Me: …
It was inexplicably awkward.
I scrubbed again, and the character sobbed, “Anyone who doesn’t get divorced is a dog!”
I swear.
I really didn’t do it on purpose. The algorithm just recommended it to me…
In the end, I simply turned off my phone. When I looked up, Gu Xuchen had already left, and all that was left on the sofa was his suit jacket.
