Chapter 12
The day before the engagement party, Jiang Yao was trying on haute couture gowns at a boutique.
Fu Liuchuan returned to the old house, saying he needed to retrieve an expensive, one-of-a-kind necklace for her.
I watched him walk through the door, go upstairs, and then-push open the door to the room at the far east end of the second floor.
That was my bedroom.
He hadn’t set foot in it since he moved out of the old house five years ago.
A sudden realization hit me, and my chest felt like a knife had been plunged into it, the pain so intense it was almost convulsive.
“Don’t give my necklace to her.”
“Brother!”
“Brother! Don’t let her wear my necklace! That was your eighteenth birthday present to me!”
“Please, brother, don’t… She’s a murderer…”
My sharp, hoarse voice echoed in the air.
No one could hear me but myself.
My soul passed through the air, through the light, and I threw myself in front of the vanity, desperately trying to block the drawer.
But it was all in vain.
Fu Liuchuan pulled open the drawer and took out the jewelry box.
For my eighteenth birthday, he had flown to London and bought a sixty-million-yuan pink diamond necklace at a Sotheby’s auction as my coming-of-age gift.
Our relationship was already strained back then.
I was overjoyed when I received the gift, but I still mocked him intentionally. “I wouldn’t dare accept a gift from the great CEO Fu. Will I have to pay you back with interest later?”
Fu Liuchuan replied coolly, “If you want to pay it back, I don’t mind. I have several other options for you. Do you want to hear them?”
I looked at him defiantly. “What, are you going to marry me off for a business alliance?”
…
Snapping back from my memories, I saw Fu Liuchuan take out the sparkling pink diamond necklace.
He tugged at the corner of his lip, as if in a slight smile. “Who else could put up with your temper besides me?”
The next second, Fu Liuchuan’s gaze shifted downwards and froze.
He was suddenly still.
At the very bottom of the jewelry box lay the love letter I had failed to give him that night so many years ago.
“For my brother to open.”
