Chapter 3
A jolt ran through my heart.
Officer Zhang stood up and gestured for me to step outside:
“In cases involving assault, female parties often feel guilty or ashamed in front of their husbands, and there are many things they find hard to say with their husbands present.”
“We just want to understand what happened. Please understand.”
I nodded in agreement.
My wife had already been inside for half an hour and still hadn’t come out.
It seemed as if things had completely spun out of control, developing in a direction I could never have anticipated.
She had actually admitted to having a lover in front of the police.
That was something I hadn’t expected.
Yes, it’s not as if I’d never suspected her of cheating.
Ding Ning loved getting her nails done.
Back then, I first noticed her at the company cafeteria, when she reached out with a pair of slender, delicate hands to get her food.
Her nails were rosy and translucent, kept long, each one decorated with a little pink bunny sticker.
Those were hands that aroused desire at first glance.
Later, I started pursuing her. We got engaged, then married. She always kept her nails immaculate, changing the style every so often-until… one morning three months ago.
I suddenly noticed that all her long nails had been cut off overnight.
“Why did you stop keeping your nails? They looked so nice,” I asked.
“I just suddenly felt that long nails aren’t that pretty after all, so I didn’t want to keep them,” she replied lightly.
She kept her head down, pretending to read, but her eyes weren’t really moving over the page.
Every so often, she would mechanically turn a page.
I stared at her, certain she was lying.
Because Ding Ning was the kind of woman who was completely uninhibited in bed.
Every time, when she reached the peak of passion, her hands would grip my back tightly, her nails unconsciously scratching across my skin, leaving vivid red marks.
I don’t know why, but when I saw she’d cut her nails, my first thought was: she’s worried that the scratch marks she leaves on a man’s body might be discovered by another woman…
Just as my thoughts raced like a midnight subway, speeding through unfamiliar tunnels without stopping at any station, Officer Zhao and the others came out.
