Chapter 3
But when you’re down on your luck, even drinking water can get stuck in your teeth.
At ten o’clock in the evening, on the main street I must pass to get home, I witnessed a convoluted love story.
The protagonists were none other than my legal husband, Tang Chao, and his first love, Bai Xiaoxia.
They were standing at the entrance of a dessert shop.
Beside them, the street was bustling with people and vehicles, colorful neon lights flickering like a scene from “Chungking Express.”
The speakers at the dessert shop’s entrance were aptly playing Eason Chan’s “Long Time No See,” adding a poignant and regretful atmosphere.
I watched them from afar.
Both seemed emotionally charged, as if they were arguing.
But as they argued, Bai Xiaoxia suddenly squatted down, hugging her slender shoulders and began to cry.
Tang Chao’s expression looked pained, and he softened immediately.
He rushed over, helped Bai Xiaoxia up, and held her tightly in his arms, as if trying to embed her into his body.
Then, on the bustling summer night street, the two lovesick individuals kissed each other passionately and desperately.
It was like a scene from a romance movie.
Years later, this image remains indelibly fixed in my memory, and whenever I hear the song “Long Time No See,” my heart feels suffocated.
I still like Eason Chan, but I will never listen to that song again.
If I weren’t the wife of one of the parties involved, I think I would be moved by the love story of the protagonists who love but cannot have each other, yet are irresistibly entangled.
Unfortunately, in this relationship, I hold the role of the supporting character, the stumbling block on their path to true love.
Suddenly, my stomach churned, and I felt an uncontrollable urge to vomit.
As I repeatedly vomited clear water, a slender hand handed me a pack of tissues.
I looked up along the hand and saw Wei Qingchen’s calm face.
He said nothing, just stuffed the tissues into my hand and turned away.
I used his tissues to wipe my mouth, feeling dizzy, and forced myself to sit on the curb.
Wei Qingchen returned, holding a piece of bread and a bottle of mineral water, and handed them to me.
I sat still, only staring blankly in the direction of Tang Chao and Bai Xiaoxia.
They had stopped kissing and were walking hand in hand along the roadside, not knowing where they were headed.
My gaze was vacant, suddenly exhausted, with no interest in knowing where they were going.
“Chen Yimiao, if you have emotions, let them out. There’s nothing you can’t get through; the sky hasn’t fallen,” Wei Qingchen suddenly spoke calmly.
Earlier, my gaze was directed, and he probably understood the situation with Tang Chao and Bai Xiaoxia.
His words suddenly ignited the anger in my heart.
How dare he casually say there’s nothing you can’t get through?
Just because his uncle is a big boss of a listed company, and he doesn’t have to work hard to achieve good results?
Such a person would never understand the pain of giving everything to love someone, only to be betrayed, right?
“Ha!” I sneered at him, “What gives you the right to condescendingly teach me how to act? Just because you’re the boss’s nephew?!
“Do you know how much I sacrificed to be with him?!
“A rich kid like you, with a flick of your finger, girls come flocking, naturally wouldn’t understand the effort it takes to get close to someone…
“If you don’t understand, don’t give advice lightly, because it will seem very hollow!”
…
In the end, I couldn’t help but shout at him, venting all the grievances accumulated over these days.
Speaking of sadness, I even started to sob.
He just listened quietly, without refuting, occasionally handing me tissues to wipe my nose and tears.
After an unknown amount of time, I finally regained my composure, numbly apologized and thanked him, and prepared to turn and go home.
“Chen Yimiao,” he gently called out to me, “I’ll take you home.”
I was about to refuse, but he quickly added, “In your current state, you’re easy prey for bad people.”
I no longer argued with him and followed him to the car.
Before going upstairs, he stopped me: “I understand what you said. But after crying, you have to look forward. Life is short; it’s really unfair to yourself to be sad for someone unworthy.”
At that moment, the moonlight shone on him, casting a silver glow over his gentle brows.
I suddenly realized that my opponent had a clean, handsome face.
Apart from Tang Chao, I hadn’t paid attention to another man’s appearance in a long time.
His words were like a breeze, clearing my mind.
Yes, after being infatuated with Tang Chao for so long, I should start caring for myself.
I ran upstairs, washed up, went to bed, and without overthinking, I fell into a deep sleep.
I want a divorce.
The moment I saw Tang Chao tenderly embrace Bai Xiaoxia, I knew I could never win in this lifetime.
Tang Chao had never looked at me with such a caring gaze.
I finally don’t have to deceive myself anymore, no longer being an annoying stumbling block on their path to true love.
I slept soundly until I naturally woke up the next day.
Opening the bedroom door, I found Tang Chao already sitting on the living room sofa.
He was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday, clearly having spent the night with Bai Xiaoxia.
Hearing the sound, he looked up at me, his eyes complex, hesitant to speak.
I spoke first: “Tang Chao, let’s get a divorce.”
As soon as I spoke, I realized my voice was still hoarse.
A flash of surprise crossed his eyes, but he quickly returned to calm, not even asking why I suddenly brought up divorce.
“Are you serious?” His voice was flat, as if asking if I had eaten.
Suppressing the swelling pain in my heart, I tried to make my voice calm: “Last night, I saw you with Bai Xiaoxia…”
Taking a deep breath, I continued, “I’ll let you be together.”
His face showed some movement, his brows furrowed: “She and I… never mind. Whatever property you want, you can have.”
Indeed, money is insignificant in the face of true love.
The divorce went smoothly; the house was his pre-marital property, so it went to him. Other assets were split equally.
