- Chapter 28 - Witnessing the Unwitnessable
Song Yu called me over, likely for another social gathering, which was my sole job responsibility. Without hesitation, I agreed.
The train arrived in Hai City at precisely three in the afternoon.
There was no glamorous car waiting for me like in the TV dramas, just me standing in line among the crowd to hail a taxi.
I kept checking my phone repeatedly, fearing I might miss any call or message. Yet, even as I sat in the cab, no surprises or unexpected events occurred.
I gave the driver the address, and soon he dropped me off at Huanya.
As I looked up at the towering gray building, I suddenly froze.
This was the distance between Song Yu and me, wasn’t it?
He was mature, wise, successful in his career, flawless in every way, while I was just a young man without a college degree, unemployed, with nothing to boast about except a pretty face and a youthful body.
I sighed deeply, feeling an overwhelming sense of melancholy. Song Yu and I were from completely different worlds, destined never to intersect.
I lowered my gaze, trying to hide my disappointment, and walked heavily into the building.
Facing the employee entrance that required a swipe card, I was at a loss.
As I stood there, bewildered, a security guard approached, scrutinizing me before asking, “You don’t work here, do you?”
I stammered, unsure of how to explain my identity.
Seeing my inability to articulate, the guard’s face darkened, “Without a work ID, you can’t enter Huanya. Move along.”
With no other choice, I tried calling Song Yu to let me in, but he didn’t answer. Frustrated, I sent him a message, yet there was no reply.
Just then, I thought I heard someone call out, “Hey,” but I ignored it, focused on my phone, waiting for Song Yu’s response.
“Hey, I’m talking to you, Two Coins,” the voice called again.
Two Coins?
I suddenly lifted my head, searching for the source of the voice.
And there he was, near the elevator, the man who had tossed me two coins that day at Mingzhu Building.
Honestly, if he hadn’t mentioned “Two Coins,” prompting me to walk over, I might not have recognized him.
Unlike his casual attire from before, today he was dressed in a black casual suit, with his shirt collar unbuttoned, hair styled neatly, exuding a rebellious charm.
Could he possibly work at Huanya too? But he didn’t seem like an ordinary office worker.
The man smiled as he approached, “So it is you.”
I awkwardly smiled back.
The guard, upon seeing him, greeted him respectfully, “Mr. Chi!”
…
I was stunned.
The guard called him “Mr. Chi,” so he was also an executive at Huanya?
The man waved his hand, and the guard obediently turned away.
“Do you work here?” he asked.
I wanted to say yes, but considering I couldn’t even get past the entrance, I wasn’t technically an employee of Huanya. I explained, “I’m here to see someone.”
“See someone? Who?”
After a moment’s hesitation, I replied, “President Song.”
“Song Yu?” He raised an eyebrow at me, his eyes filled with amusement.
I nodded.
“Then what are you doing here?”
Feeling embarrassed, I lowered my gaze, staring at my silent phone, “I… I can’t get in.”
“You came to see Song Yu and got stuck outside?” He pieced together my situation.
I didn’t respond, essentially confirming his assumption.
“Heh, that’s interesting,” he chuckled, “Come with me, I’ll take you to him.”
I looked up, eyes gleaming with delight, “Really? Thank you so much.”
He casually tucked his hands into his pockets, gesturing for me to follow, “Let’s go.”
Soon, I was accompanying “Mr. Chi” in the executive elevator, heading straight to the 33rd floor.
As the elevator doors opened, I was stunned by the scene before me. I had always thought the executive offices in TV dramas were luxurious enough, but reality exceeded my expectations.
Mr. Chi led me through the gym, leisure area, and the VIP conference room, until we reached the president’s office.
I was about to thank him for bringing me up when he abruptly pushed open the office door without a word.
Instinctively, I glanced inside, catching sight of Song Yu and Nian Hua in a half-pulled, half-tugged stance at the desk.
Song Yu noticed us at the door, slightly furrowing his brow. Nian Hua seized the opportunity to withdraw his wrist, escaping Song Yu’s grip, and with a flushed face, bowed to Song Yu, “President Song, please review the design plans and proposals. If there’s anything unsatisfactory, I’ll revise them.”
With that, he hurriedly picked up his fallen briefcase and fled the office.
I stood there, dumbfounded, my mind blank. So Song Yu hadn’t answered my calls because Nian Hua was here.
Had I arrived a bit later, then they…
My breath tightened, suppressing my wild thoughts, striving to appear normal.
“President Song!” I greeted him casually.
Song Yu adjusted his shirt collar, his gaze sweeping over Mr. Chi and me, finally settling on me, “Why are you with him?”
I was about to explain when Mr. Chi spoke first, his tone arrogant, “Song Yu, is this how you manage a company in Z Country?”
“My dad actually wants me to return and learn company management from you. Tsk, learn what? Learn how you mess around with men in the office during the day?”
“Oh, no, it should be… coercing men.” Mr. Chi deliberately elongated the last four words, his tone dripping with mockery and sarcasm.
I was dumbstruck by his audacity.
I glanced at Song Yu, whose face darkened instantly, a cold aura enveloping him.
“Chi Jin, your father is my senior brother. By seniority, you should call me uncle. By position, I’m the president, and you’re merely a regional manager. You should knock before entering the president’s office. Don’t you understand basic etiquette?”
“Go to finance later and sign off, deducting 30% from your monthly bonus and base salary. Leave.”
I had expected Song Yu to lash out in anger, but he simply handled the subordinate’s misconduct professionally.
Chi Jin narrowed his eyes, coldly threatening, “Song Yu, don’t try to pressure me with your position. My dad is the major shareholder of Huanya, and frankly, you’re just working for our family. Don’t think you can act recklessly just because my dad values you.”
“When I inherit my dad’s shares, the first thing I’ll do is fire you.”
Song Yu casually smirked, “Then wait until you’re Huanya’s top shareholder to say that.”
“For now, leave!”
Chi Jin gritted his teeth, reluctantly exiting the president’s office.
