A True Heroine Needs No Man - Chapter 5
“There’s a party tonight. It’s been too long, let’s all get together.”
The message was from Lin Lailei.
She was the friend I chatted with the most.
I hadn’t seen them in ages, so I agreed without much thought.
When I arrived, Lin Lailei came out to greet me.
She gave me a quick once-over.
“So many people were expecting you to come back and conquer, but you’re still dressed so simply.”
I was wearing a fitted white dress, elegantly tailored but with a simple design.
I smiled at her but didn’t say anything, just took her hand and walked inside.
As soon as we entered, I felt gazes, subtle and not-so-subtle, sizing me up.
I glanced at Lin Lailei, who wore a helpless expression.
“Everyone loves a bit of drama, you know?”
But I didn’t think it would be this dramatic…
My thoughts were cut short. I finally understood why there were so many unfamiliar faces here.
It was because of Shang Luzhou.
He was standing on the second-floor balcony, looking down at me.
I only had to tilt my head slightly to meet his eyes.
He wore a black shirt, buttons undone as usual, revealing a swath of cool skin. The light from above cast his face in shadow, so I couldn’t read his expression.
But I imagined he wasn’t thrilled.
“What is he doing here?”
Lin Lailei waved her hands frantically.
“It’s not my fault, I swear I didn’t know.”
“They said they had a surprise for you. I’m just as shocked as you are.”
My phone buzzed. It was our group chat.
It was exploding with messages, all from different people but saying pretty much the same thing.
[Shang Luzhou said he wouldn’t come, but his body is very honest.]
[Go Fu! We’re Team Fu all the way!]
[He’s just stubborn. Even though he brought his so-called girlfriend, he obviously can’t get you out of his head.]
Messages like these flooded the screen.
I truly didn’t understand what I had done to make them think I would ever want to be the other woman.
[Please don’t say things like that. Shang Luzhou and I are really in the past. If I still liked him, I wouldn’t have broken up with him.]
[I know you all mean well, but he has a new girlfriend. You should respect his relationship, respect her, and respect my choice.]
[This makes me really uncomfortable. Please stop. I don’t like it.]
After sending the message, I asked Lin Lailei to ping everyone in the group.
I didn’t know if it would work, but at least the chat fell silent for a few seconds.
I lowered my eyes as a scene from the novel suddenly flooded my mind.
In the book, after the “unforgettable first love” returns, Shang Luzhou, still unsure of his feelings for the female lead Su Wanyin, storms into the party to make Shen Fu regret leaving him.
He doesn’t even notice that Su Wanyin is sick.
At the party, he repeatedly insults Shen Fu, completely oblivious to the fact that Su Wanyin is curled up in pain.
After Shen Fu leaves in tears, Shang Luzhou immediately abandons Su Wanyin to chase after her.
As the male lead, no matter how cruelly he behaved, he always had a following.
Some of the girls who had crushes on him had been waiting for an opportunity like this.
They couldn’t touch Shen Fu, but what about a helpless, unsupported girl like Su Wanyin?
Su Wanyin gets locked in a room. Her phone has only three percent battery left, and she calls Shang Luzhou until it dies, never getting through.
It takes him nearly fifty hours to even remember her existence.
Remembering this part of the plot, I didn’t hesitate. I headed straight for the stairs.
