Chapter 4
I walked into Jian Yu’s company with the pear soup.
No one stopped me; everyone was already used to my presence, and even the receptionist was familiar with me.
“Mr. Lin, you’re here early today,” Xiao Lan greeted.
Compared to Jian Yu, my family background was almost negligible. Plus, I wasn’t the one managing it; my Alpha sister had low expectations of me:
Eating and playing were fine, but no starting businesses.
To put it harshly, I was unemployed. Yet, being with Jian Yu, I somehow earned the title of “Mr. Lin.”
“You look good today,” I greeted back and went straight to Jian Yu’s office upstairs.
Entering the room, I placed the pear soup on his desk: “Quick, it’s still warm.”
He was interrupted from his work but didn’t seem annoyed. He tidied the documents on his desk, unscrewed the thermos, and slowly began to drink.
“Have you found that person I asked about?”
“Cough,” he choked a little, looking up at me. “How could it be that fast? Are you in a hurry?”
“A little,” I said stubbornly, though I was actually dying of anxiety.
After what happened, no matter what, I had to take responsibility, right?
Of course, I was anxious about not being able to find the person.
“What did he do? Steal your kidney or your money?”
Jian Yu’s verbal sparring had improved over the years; he never used to joke around.
I was still thinking about whether or not to tell him.
Not telling him felt wrong, he was my best friend.
But telling him felt incredibly awkward.
As I hesitated, Jian Yu seemed to sense my dilemma and changed the subject:
“Song Qiao is going abroad. Are you coming to the party tonight?”
He paused, then added, “I heard she’s going to confess before she leaves.”
I immediately said, “Of course, I have to go!”
She only told me to come, not about the confession. Jian Yu really had all the inside scoop.
The female lead was going to confess to the male lead; this was truly epic.
I slapped his back playfully, teasing him, “Looks like you’re finally going to get somewhere.”
Jian Yu, however, said something out of the blue:
“The smell…”
“The smell? Oh, you mean from my clothes?”
I had showered and changed clothes this morning before coming. I nodded profoundly:
“So you can smell it. I don’t know why the new fabric softener has such a strong scent. I thought only I could smell it.”
He said nothing, finishing his soup.
Thinking about how my best friend was about to achieve his goal, my retreating figure exuded a certain joy.
If they got married, I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say I’d definitely be the best man. My role in the male and female leads’ romance was absolutely crucial.
