Summary
There was a wide river running past our village.
The grown-ups all said my childhood friend Li Wen had drowned in it.
I didn’t know what “drowned” meant.
Zhou Yanan, the best student in our class, said it meant she had died in the water.
I asked what “died in the water” meant.
She got annoyed with me for being slow and said it meant I would never see Li Wen again.
But the grown-ups were wrong.
Whenever I rode my bicycle past the river, I saw Li Wen standing there with one foot in the water, waving at me.
She told me to come into the river.
I told her to come ashore.
In the end, she gave in.
The two of us played hopscotch on the new concrete road through the village.
Every square she stepped in filled with a puddle.
But her shadow was gone.
