Summary
The New Emperor was a volatile soul, having already executed seven painters tasked with capturing her likeness.
When it came time for my legitimate younger sister, the “Painting Immortal,” she spent the entire night weeping.
That was until Xie Lian arrived to propose, using the name of Prince Xuan’s Mansion to shield her.
He had completely forgotten the solemn vows of eternal love he once made to me in Suzhou.
My mother said, “You’re a fool anyway. Dying in your sister’s place will finally repay this family for the debt of raising you.”
And so, I took my legitimate younger sister’s place in the carriage and entered the depths of the palace.
Inside the hall, the curtains hung low. The monarch’s face was hidden behind a Nuo Mask. Before I began to paint, she allowed me only three questions.
As I ground the ink and raised my brush, I asked her only one:
“Do you like your father more, or your mother?”

Good story but the mixup in he/she with the emperor makes it hard to read.

Thanks for pointing that out! I’ve fixed the confusing he/she mixup around the emperor.
Just to clarify, the emperor’s gender is part of a later reveal in the story, so the earlier chapters are meant to keep it a little ambiguous. The wording should read much more smoothly now.
Thanks again for catching it!
