Summary
A month before the college entrance exams, my mother called me in tears. She said my younger brother had blinded a classmate in one eye, and they couldn’t afford the compensation.
She told me to come home and marry a man she’d already picked out so they could use the bride price to pay the damages.
She said she gave birth to me and raised me, and if I repaid her this once, we would be even.
I was dazed. “Why should I repay you?”
“If you didn’t want to give birth to me, you shouldn’t have hopped into bed with my dad.”
