The Unremarkable Little Taoist Master - Chapter 154 - The Story of the Female Ghost
The old daoist priest raised the copper coin sword in his hands, silently reciting a spell, and shouted out loud.
The copper coin sword radiated a yellow light that shot toward the female ghost. She quickly stepped back, but with a thud, she was still hit by the sword, causing her dark energy to wane slightly. The female ghost waved her right hand, sending a wave of black energy toward the old daoist priest, who swiftly cleaved through her attack with the copper coin sword.
I was watching quietly from the side when I suddenly noticed something tentacle-like behind the old man. Forgetting about the female ghost, I shouted to him, “Watch out behind you!”
The old daoist priest hurriedly turned around, only to see a surge of yin energy rushing toward him. He quickly crossed the copper coin sword over his chest.
“Bang!” The old daoist priest staggered back a few steps, spitting out blood.
I rushed over to him, concerned, and asked, “Are you okay?”
The old man, however, angrily replied, “Who told you to come out? Don’t you realize this is a thousand-year-old female ghost? Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
“Hmph, if I hadn’t come here today, how many people would you have harmed instead?”
The old daoist priest nearly shouted these words.
I expected the female ghost to attack him again, but surprisingly, she just stood there.
Suddenly, the blood-red color in her eyes began to fade, replaced by clarity.
“Hmph, no one can stop me from seeking revenge today.”
The female ghost coldly declared to us, “Even if it takes me ten thousand years, I will find them. I want revenge; I will kill them all.”
Seeing the madness in the female ghost, the words we had prepared were swallowed back down. I felt that saying more would be pointless, as I could sense her aura was approaching a breaking point. If I provoked her further, we might genuinely be risking our lives.
Looking at the somewhat deranged female ghost, I finally voiced the question that had been nagging at me, “Why do you insist on avenging yourself?”
The female ghost seemed to fall into a trance, lost in memories. She began to speak to herself, while I listened attentively to the story that she shared about her life. Sometimes, ghosts aren’t as terrifying as we imagine; they can just be pitiful beings.
The female ghost recounted, “I was born in a palace. My father was an emperor, and I was his youngest princess. I lived a carefree and happy life, enjoying my days without a worry.”
“Then one day, he appeared. He was a general, embodying all the qualities of a hero I had fantasized about. He was young and exceptionally talented. In that moment, I found myself irresistibly drawn to him. I approached my father, who also thought highly of him, and my father arranged our engagement.”
“Married life was even more blissful. We treated each other with respect, and after our wedding, we had a pair of children. I believed that I was favored by heaven and destined for happiness. Unfortunately, things took a dark turn. He betrayed my father and led an army to invade the royal city.”
“They slaughtered all the members of our royal family. When I received the news, it felt as though my world had collapsed. I rushed into the palace and saw the familiar faces I loved, their blood staining the ground. I saw my father’s face, frozen in death, his eyes wide open in a final gaze.”
“I went mad. My world crumbled. I found him sitting on the throne, basking in glory as he received the worship of officials. In that moment, I felt like a fool, realizing I had been nothing but a tool for his ambition, a co-conspirator in the murder of my own family.”
“I ran toward him, pointing and screaming in rage. He looked at me with a complex expression but said nothing, only instructing the guards to throw me out. I left in despair, completely alone. I chose death and drowned myself in a lake.”
“As a ghost, I found solace in watching him suffer day by day. I vowed to take revenge; I silently promised myself that I would never forget what he owed me in this life, and in the next, I would make him pay.”
“Until the day he died, I silently observed as he lived out his life step by step. When he drew his last breath, I saw the regret and sorrow in his eyes. Heartbroken, I left the palace and began to wander aimlessly, growing stronger day by day.”
“I thought about reincarnation, but water ghosts need to find a substitute to be reborn, so I had been waiting all this time. I never intended to harm anyone until one day I saw a young daoist priest about to jump into a river. I decided to reveal myself and try to comfort him; after all, he was still so young.”
“At that moment, I was just a little ghost. After saving the young priest, I discovered it was a trap. The young daoist had come to subdue me. Later, I was sealed by him, forced to become his pet ghost, carrying out countless dark deeds for him.”
“During that time, my power grew stronger day by day, but I became harder to control. The daoist, seeing me becoming more powerful each day, used secret techniques to locate my corpse. He sealed my head using his magical skills and never revealed to me where he hid it, even until his death.”
“After the daoist priest died, I chose to reincarnate. When I arrived in the underworld, they refused my reincarnation, claiming that my body was incomplete. That’s when my hatred took hold, and I escaped from the underworld. I vowed to take revenge; I wanted vengeance.”
Listening to the female ghost’s story, my heart was filled with sympathy. Not all ghosts have a malicious heart; sometimes, humans can be far more terrifying-human desires can be the most terrible demons.
At that moment, the old daoist priest spoke to the female ghost, “I sympathize with your experience. Go ahead and reincarnate; I will help you.”
The female ghost was taken aback for a moment, and then a gust of Yin wind struck the old man, sending him flying. He grunted and coughed up blood as the female ghost’s claw tightened around his neck.
The old daoist felt he was about to suffocate, as the female ghost’s voice echoed in his ears, “Will you help me take my revenge?”
In that bleak moment, the old daoist gathered his strength and shouted, “Go ahead and kill me! Even if you do, I won’t help you with your revenge!”
I thought the female ghost would kill the old daoist. I clutched the bronze mirror tightly, ready to perish alongside her.
But after what felt like an eternity, I didn’t see the female ghost make a move. When the old daoist opened his eyes, I saw her standing still, a look of confusion on her face.
The female ghost’s voice slowly came through, “I don’t want you to help me take revenge. I just want to see if he lived well; I just want to ask where my corpse is.”
Hearing her request, the old daoist sighed.
