The Ultimate Horror Live Stream - Chapter 19 - The Ex's Wedding
The bustling city seemed wound up like a clock, everyone in a hurried pace. It was just past seven in the morning and the streets were already bustling with traffic.
Walking among the crowd, I felt distinctly out of place-a sort of occupational hazard, perhaps.
Instead of taking a taxi, I walked the entire length of Tingtang Road and arrived at the tallest multi-purpose tower in Jiang City’s New District, Century New Garden.
This is the headquarters of Jiangjin Real Estate, one of the few five-star hotels in Jiang City, and the venue for the wedding of Jiang Chen, the second son of the Jiang Family, and Ye Bing.
The wedding here was an invitation to the elite and prominent figures of Jiang City, ostensibly a gathering of high-profile individuals but actually a ceremony by the Jiang Family to formally introduce Ye Bing into high society.
“From a nobody to a phoenix, from now on our lives should no longer intersect,” I muttered to myself with a self-deprecating smile, my gaze sweeping over the rows of luxury cars at the entrance-Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and even two Spykers, each starting at five million.
“Sir, Century New Garden is exclusively booked by the Jiang Family for the wedding today. Please show your invitation,” said the burly security guard, his tone polite on the surface but firm, confident that they could afford to offend, backed by the Jiangjin Group.
“Of course.” Stopped by the security, I had nothing else to say. After all, everyone else was arriving in chauffeured luxury cars, while I was the only one walking leisurely.
“Sorry, sir, right this way, please.”
“Huh? Are you… Gao Jian?!” Just as I entered the gate and had barely taken a few steps, a well-dressed man ran over from the parking lot: “I really didn’t expect you to attend Young Master Jiang’s wedding, haha, long time no see.”
I responded with a cold expression, giving little reaction. The overly familiar fellow in front of me was my classmate from the Police Academy, Xu Xiuming, who was always smooth-talking and adept at handling people. Despite his warmth now, he could feign a joyful reunion even with a stranger on the street.
“Hello.” That single word was the longest sentence I had ever said to him.
“Oh, look who it is, isn’t this our former brother-in-law Gao Jian?” The woman speaking was Zhang Yuanyuan, also a classmate from the Police Academy, unlike Xu Xiuming, she loved to gossip and was quite disagreeable. I heard she got married right after graduation to a guy from another school and was already a mother.
I frowned and quickly walked away, but my mind was busy thinking: “Zhang Yuanyuan is nothing but a shrew, definitely not a successful person. She and her husband left Jiang City long ago, so why would she specifically come to Ye Bing’s wedding? She used to be most jealous of Ye Bing’s beauty; wishing well hardly fits her character.”
“Unless someone specifically invited her and offered a price too tempting to refuse.” It didn’t take much thought to realize the mastermind behind this was the petty groom, Jiang Chen: “It seems today’s wedding will be quite interesting indeed.”
The banquet hall was filled with guests, and a quick glance revealed several company executives among them. These individuals were the elite of the business world, their demeanor and speech unmistakably marked by the traits of seasoned entrepreneurs.
This wedding had transformed into a networking event, with most attendees seeking to expand their connections rather than offering genuine blessings to the newlyweds.
“Gao Jian, over here! Everyone’s been waiting for you!” Following the voice, I saw that two tables at the corner of the hall were set aside specifically for me-or rather, for former classmates from the Police Academy.
The round table was adorned with exquisite cold dishes, and a dozen classmates exchanged pleasantries.
“Heard you bought another house?”
“How old is your son now?”
“Wow, that watch must be worth a fortune.”
I ignored their chatter, lighting a cigarette and smoking quietly.
Compared to them, I had nothing, and they were merely passing figures in my life.
Yet, while I bore no ill will, some classmates who hadn’t fared well began to steer the conversation towards me.
To them, I was the pitiable one-attending an ex’s wedding with nothing to show for myself.
Is there anything more disheartening than seeing your former girlfriend marry a man you can only look up to?
“Gao Jian, we haven’t heard from you in years. How have you been?”
“Yeah, after that incident, we lost touch.”
“By the way, did they ever catch the real culprit?”
The incident they referred to was the infamous Rainy Night Serial Murder Case that shocked Jiang City. My involvement in it led to major trouble and my expulsion from the Police Academy.
“Let’s not dwell on that. Let’s talk about happier things. Gao Jian used to rank among the top in overall performance. Someone as talented as him must be doing better than us in whatever he chooses to do.”
“Really? I heard he’s been selling those things and living quite frugally.”
“Is that so? No wonder Ye Bing left him. I wouldn’t want to be with a man like that either. Look at Young Master Jiang-handsome and charming, just like a Korean drama lead.”
“Exactly, and he’s wealthy too. Haven’t you heard? The Jiang Family practically holds up half of Jiang City!”
“Ye Bing’s really lucky.”
The group whispered among themselves, some envying Ye Bing, others gloating over my situation.
I exhaled a puff of smoke. As a private detective, I’ve seen too much filth to bother refuting them.
“Seems you’re better at dealing with the dead than the living.” A soft laugh came from beside me, accompanied by a unique, enchanting fragrance.
“Tie Ningxiang?” I didn’t turn around, having already memorized the scent that seemed like her natural fragrance. “What brings you here? Is the Anxin Inn case closed?”
Extinguishing the cigarette, I turned to look, and despite being mentally prepared, I was still stunned by Tie Ningxiang in her evening gown. “So beautiful…”
Her shoulders, like fine jade, were exposed, while her flowing dress swayed gently. Without her police uniform, she truly embodied elegance and innocence.
The men at the table were all dumbfounded, while the women stopped their gossip, casting unfriendly glances at Tie Ningxiang.
“Could you make some room? I need to speak with him.”
“Alright, alright.” Xu Xiuming, sitting next to me, immediately stood up and gallantly pulled out a chair.
Tie Ningxiang nodded and sat beside me. “You all carry on with your conversation. It’s a class reunion, don’t let me spoil your fun.”
Are you kidding? With a goddess like her sitting next to this down-and-out guy, how are we supposed to chat?
Just as we were discussing how right it was for Ye Bing to leave him, here comes a woman even more stunning than Ye Bing, seemingly intent on shaking things up. What kind of luck does this guy have?
The old classmates’ chatter turned into whispers. Tie Ningxiang gave me a playful glance. “Sorry to take up a bit of your time.”
“No worries, I’m bored here anyway. But why are you attending Ye Bing’s wedding?”
“My family is quite close with the Jiang Family, so I had no choice. My family insisted.”
Tie Ningxiang glanced around, then moved her chair closer, leaning in to whisper in my ear, “Xiao Feng, the adopted daughter of the landlord at Anxin Inn, wants to see you.”
“Her?” Although I had guessed Tie Ningxiang had something to discuss, I didn’t expect it to be about Xiao Feng.
“I don’t know what happened between you two, but she specifically asked to see you, saying there are things she can only tell you.” Tie Ningxiang’s eyes narrowed slightly, like a cunning fox. “You two aren’t in that kind of relationship, are you?”
Her expression was quite nuanced. I didn’t mind, but the guys at the table were clearly stirred up.
Those were looks of envy and jealousy. The goddess was obviously displeased that he was attending his ex’s wedding! What on earth makes this guy so special that he can have such a devoted goddess by his side?
“You’re overthinking it. Xiao Feng and I have only met once. The time we’ve spent together is probably less than the time you’ve spent with her.”
“Regardless, come back to the station with me this afternoon. Just do me this favor, okay?”
I rarely saw Tie Ningxiang asking for help, so I teased, “No problem. If I ever get into trouble, I’ll be counting on you, Senior.”
We were whispering not because of any intimacy, but because it involved a murder case that we didn’t want others to overhear.
But this scene was misunderstood by the old classmates, leading to endless speculation.
