The Ultimate Horror Live Stream - Chapter 13 - The Depths of the Shallow Well
Earlier, I had already speculated that the bathroom had been deliberately renovated, and the landlord must be hiding something. Whatever was concealed by time, unspeakable and possibly related to other murder cases.
I organized the clues in my mind. Anxin Inn had never been a place where one could stay peacefully. The bald driver uncle had mentioned that years ago, people had disappeared around here. I wasn’t clear on the specifics, but all evidence pointed to this dilapidated inn.
I flipped through my phone’s mailbox, recalling the call I received from that strange woman at the beginning of this mission. She had mentioned being hidden within the walls, under the floor, and behind the bathtub…
A chill ran down my spine. Could that call have been from a vengeful ghost?
Staring at the bathtub semi-fixed to the wall, I mustered up my courage, went back to the room to fetch scissors, and began prying open the tiles along the seams.
“This place is backlit, damp, and accumulates filth, making it the area with the heaviest Yin energy in the entire room. It’s no wonder the ghost fled here,” Liu the Half-Immortal from the Foot of Mount Qingcheng continued to guide me remotely, reminding me not to be careless.
Once the tiles were all pried off, the space beneath the bathtub was pitch black, with only the four corners supported by bricks, leaving the middle hollow.
“Half-Immortal, could that vengeful ghost call for reinforcements? Can I handle this?” There was definitely something wrong under the bathtub. I hesitated, hands supporting the tub’s bottom. “The Thunder Talisman’s color is fading; it might not work many more times. If I’m besieged by ghosts with grievances, the consequences would be unimaginable.”
“No worries. The talisman prototype is derived from the heavenly thunder tribulation, a pure Yang and extremely firm object. As long as you carry it, self-preservation won’t be an issue.”
Since the Half-Immortal said so, I couldn’t refuse further. I slowly increased my strength to lift the bathtub.
“What is this?”
Beneath the bathtub wasn’t the corpse I had initially suspected, but a dark, unfathomable hole. About one and a half feet wide and one foot long, just enough for an adult to pass through.
“Where does it lead?” The architectural style of Anxin Inn was bizarre, with room numbers in no particular order. The first floor was uninhabited, while the second and third floors were guest rooms. Although I was staying in room 203, I couldn’t be sure that 103 was directly below me.
Using the light from my phone, I shone it into the hole. It was deep, with the walls lined with long-dried, soil-colored fabric strips: “Synthetic fibers, probably from someone’s clothes accidentally torn.”
This was a disused and deliberately hidden hole. The question was, who dug it, and for what purpose?
The truth buried might lie within the hole. Standing on the edge of the abyss, I decided to investigate.
The camera was too cumbersome; if I were to enter the hole, I couldn’t take it with me. So I set it aside: “Dear Water Friends, let me reiterate, this isn’t a prank or a pre-arranged show. I won’t say much more. If I’m not back in an hour, please remember this address and call the police immediately!”
I didn’t know if there was a signal inside the hole or if I’d encounter danger. Too many unknowns. I could only rely on the Water Friends in the Live Room.
“Streamer, go ahead. I’ll call the police for you.”
“Just woke up. Did the ghost appear? Say something!”
“The streamer is very dedicated. Have you considered joining our B-movie king crew?”
Handsome, Skilled, and Loved by Girls: “I don’t know if you’re acting, but live streaming prostitution is definitely wrong. Expect to be taken in; I reported it to the police half an hour ago!”
“Don’t joke around. This place is really haunted; we all saw it earlier! Although we didn’t see the face clearly, it was definitely a female ghost.”
Handsome, Skilled, and Loved by Girls: “If it’s not special effects, it’s extras. These are old tricks. Waiting for the streamer to pack up and leave.”
Seeing someone had already reported it, I felt both amused and helpless: “Since someone already called the police, I have no worries.”
Gathering my things, I supported myself against the hole’s walls and slowly slid inside…
“The streamer disappeared.”
“Right there, the streamer fell into the hole…”
It took about ten seconds before my feet touched solid ground again. This nearly vertical hole was about three meters deep, with small man-made pits along the walls for climbing.
“I should be on the first floor now.” The space at the bottom was cramped, but I could hear the wind, so I wasn’t worried about suffocation.
Bending low, with the Thunder Talisman close, I cautiously explored forward.
Without the camera, Liu the Half-Immortal couldn’t immediately know my situation. I was on my own.
Raising my arm, the faint light from my phone screen was my only guide, with a visible range of just a few dozen centimeters. I feared seeing a face suddenly appear in front of me.
After crawling a short distance, the wall beside me indented. Turning my head, I saw a Dual-Faced Buddha Statue carved into the wall.
One face was kind and benevolent, the other fierce and malevolent. I didn’t know which deity it represented. I took a photo with my phone and continued forward.
After crawling for about ten meters, I finally saw some light. I turned off my phone and approached quietly in the dark.
“Old man, there’s quite a commotion in 203. That young man is probably in trouble.”
“Serves him right for getting involved with that wretched woman.”
“Sigh, what a sin…”
The conversation was faint. I moved a few meters closer and saw a fork in the tunnel. One side led to deeper darkness, the other connected to the inn’s first floor.
The elderly couple was inside, mixing cement to seal the tunnel’s connection to the first floor completely.
“Seal it up, and let’s never do this again.”
“Dear, I still want to see our son.”
“He’s not coming back, sigh…”
Lying in the tunnel, I dared not breathe loudly: “Clearly, the ones who dug the tunnel were this elderly couple. But why did they do it?”
After the old couple left, I stood up, turned on my phone, and walked toward the other side of the fork.
The ground was muddy and damp, and at the end of the path was a shallow well covered with wooden planks.
I lifted the heavy planks, and a foul stench hit my nose.
“Oh my God!”
Inside the well was a large, dark mass. An ordinary person might have immediately replaced the cover and left, but not me.
This putrid smell was one I’d encountered at crime scenes before-the smell of corpses.
I adjusted my phone’s brightness to the maximum. The dark mass was finally clear, not water plants or moss, but tangled, sinister hair and heavily corroded bones.
My face turned ashen. Based on the skulls peeking through the hair, I could roughly estimate the number of deceased.
“No fewer than four!” My scalp tingled as I fought the urge to vomit. I covered the well and retraced my steps: “Call the police! This is a major case!”
Stumbling, I ran back, climbing the vertical hole, desperately using the footholds to ascend.
But before I could climb halfway, I heard the door above open.
“Xiao Feng?”
I looked up in confusion, locking eyes with the face at the hole’s entrance.
A striking scar marred the face: “It’s that Old Man!”
“Damn!” My escape blocked, I let go and jumped back into the hole, turning to run toward the fork: “The path connecting the tunnel to the first floor isn’t completely sealed yet. I’ll escape through there!”
Running at full speed, I kicked away the wooden board blocking the gap and entered the room connected to the tunnel.
The room was cluttered with junk, with two sealed metal barrels in the corner. Without time to inspect, I headed straight for the door: “I must get out!”
Grabbing the doorknob, I pulled it open, only to find the Short and Fat Old Lady standing in the only passage.
“I wondered why there was a stench earlier. Turns out you lifted the well cover.” She held a cleaver hidden behind her back, the tip already visible: “I need to wait here for my son, so I’ll have to ask you to keep quiet!”
The Old Lady swung the cleaver. I slammed the door shut with a bang: “Great, trapped. Not killed by a ghost, but by humans instead.”
“Bang!” Outside, the Old Lady hacked at the lock with the cleaver. Footsteps echoed in the tunnel, the Scarred Old Man approaching. Exhausted and panicked, I was at a loss, unsure what to do.
Time passed, despair brewing. Just as the Scarred Old Man emerged from the tunnel, police sirens suddenly blared outside Anxin Inn!
“Listen up inside, we’ve received a confirmed report. There’s illegal activity going on here!”
